I have so many associations with this song I don't even know where to begin.

My sister tells me that, when we were kids, I insisted on renting Little Shop of Horrors for a sleepover we were having with my friend and her friend (who were also sisters, as luck would have it). I don't remember this at all, but my sister claims that her friend got so scared she had to call her mom to come pick her up. So I ruined the sleepover. My sister will never forgive me for this.

I have extremely vague memories of playing the role of some variety of tropical flora in a summer camp production of Little Shop of Horrors. Wish I could tell you more, but this was a ridiculously long time ago.

More recently, I do recall Suddenly Seymour coming on during an episode of The Goldbergs. Naturally, I started singing along--belting the tune, because it's one of my favourite numbers. Of course, an ex who was trying to wriggle back into my life chose that moment to slip a love letter through my mail slot. Humiliation level: off the charts.

Even so, this tune gets me every time.  Chokes me up.  Brings a tear to my eye.

And this version is the best I've ever heard.

Hi Friends, Turns out the reason I've been so sick is that I have Covid. I tested negative two days ago, but this morning the test came back positive. I do still own this CD. I bought it when it first came out (in 1999? Wow...) and I remember being so proud of it. When I had my best friend over for dinner at my first apartment, I played this album and she was like, "Ugh, turn it off! I HATE baroque music!" heh It came to mind the other week when I was isolating my diseased self at my apartment and my partner was three hours away at his house. He wrote me an email one evening to tell me the classical radio station we listen to had just played Karina Gauvin singing Where'er You Walk, and it brought him to tears. We've listened to Where'er You Walk here on more than one occasion, because it's a song that holds meaning for my partner. Whether you were a child in the 90s or an adult who just happened to enjoy a quality animated series, you probably loved Pinky and the Brain as much as I did. Cartoons really spoke to me, when I was a kid. My household was plagued by domestic violence, and I swear there were times when cartoons saved me.  I had Strawberry Shortcake bedsheets and a Smurfs blanket, and when the world was crashing down outside my door (literally--there was a lot of crashing in my house), I would burrow under the covers and pretend I was in Cartoon World with all my favourite characters. If you've ever seen a britcom from the 90s called Waiting for God, you will surely remember this music, which was used as the show's theme song. Okay, full disclosure: I had no idea what piece this was or who it was by. I had to look that up. But the internet knows all, so it isn't hard to figure out classical music trivia, these days. The reason I was thinking about Waiting for God is also trivial, though hopefully amusing? My partner has a friend who lives in a retirement residence. When he was visiting this guy the other week, someone else in the building was getting rid of a pair of bedside tables. Since my partner cannot resist garbage furniture, he grabbed them. They've been sitting in the car ever since. Until today, that is. I suggested we bring them in and stick them in the basement until we get a chance to clean them up. I mentioned the other day that there were more sad posts to come.  Well, here we go. One of my cats has been very sick and I had to have him put down the other day.   Can't get much sadder than that. My partner drove me to the vet's office. As soon as we got in the car, this song came on the radio. And it wasn't the start of the song. A lot has changed since I first created this blog. Even more changes happened while the blog was on hiatus. Most notably, my partner was diagnosed with cancer. He is currently receiving treatments, the side effects of which make every day incredibly arduous. When you become a caregiver, everybody tells you that you have to take care of yourself first--the whole oxygen mask thing. Even my partner tells me I need to take care of myself first, particularly because I have chronic health conditions that make it almost impossible to function some days. It feels kind of ridiculous sometimes, the two of us trying to take care of each other when we're both sick. We need so much help, and right now we have nothing. All we've got is each other. Every time someone tells me to take care of myself first, I wonder how I'm supposed to do that when my partner's needs are so immediate and life-or-death. He is not a demanding person. I was watching a murder mystery the other day, and the detective found a clue in the victim's journal: it was an ancient sepia photograph of the woman when she was a child. The photograph was dated... 1984. 1984? Okay, speaking as someone who was also a child in 1984, I can tell you that none of my childhood photos are sepia-toned! I do have quite a few black-and-white pictures of my sister and myself, but that's just because my father was kind of artsy with his camera and he would sometimes buy black-and-white film. But the vast majority of photos taken in 1984 were in full colour. Definitely not sepia! I wondered how old the prop person on that TV show was, and if they thought photography in 1984 was basically the same as photography in 1884. This is a cover of a Bowie song, by the way.
