#SongoftheDay Stressed Out (twenty one pilots)

Okay. I know people are going to make fun of me, but I like this song. It's a reminder that nostalgia can hit at any age. I am middle-aged and nostalgia sweeps over me constantly.  My partner is a senior and nostalgia takes him like an ocean wave--sometimes to the point where he can't find enjoyment in the present moment.

Was it last week or the week before that we went on a little holiday?  We were lucky enough to be able to rent the cottage my partner's parents built.  It was beautiful. The family who'd bought it after my partner's parents died made some huge improvements. Lots of upgrades (like a furnace!) but they also kept special items, like a painting done by my partner's aunt.

Even so, my partner spent much of our time away bemoaning the fact that everything is different. It's not exactly the way he remembers.  Even though the lake is the same, the land is the same.

He didn't say so, but I could tell that he was craving various stages of life that are now in the past. He didn't just want to go swimming in the lake--he wanted his children to be there, and to be little kids again. He wanted to re-experience moments from the past that only exist in memories.

It was actually really hard for me to watch him spend so much time wallowing rather than creating new memories with me.

When I participated in Yale's very popular Happiness course online, one thing I learned is that savouring the moment helps us to be grateful, and gratitude leads to increased happiness.  One of the great enemies of savouring is comparing this moment to other moments, thinking this isn't as good as that--which is precisely what my partner was doing.

Sure we can go back to the past, in our minds, but we can't live there. We have to live here.  We need to make the best of it.

If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. Tell anyone you know--particularly people who are isolated and enjoy music.

Readers of adult fiction can also buy my books or check them out from your local library. Supporting my AudioErotica endeavour on Patreon would also help me hugely!

I'm also an Amazon Influencer, so hopefully I can make a little pocket change when you buy stuff by clicking through my affiliate links.

But you don't HAVE to do any of that. I'm very happy to get a daily visit from you, so just keep coming back.

Oh, and I also recommend hitting the "Subscribe" button at the top of the page so you won't miss a song!

See you tomorrow!
