I was walking down the street where I live, on the way home from my local library, the summer sun blazing down on me, when a car stopped at a red light.

It was blasting this song. Right at the chorus, too.

This mundane occurence filled me with the feels, and I wasn't sure why. Then I looked down and realized I was wearing a dress I've owned since this song first came out. I've got the 90s all over me, baby--head to toe. Well, shoulders to toe. My dress didn't cover my head.

And it occured to me that I feel like exactly the same person I was in 1994. Am I? Am I really?

Will I always be the same little me?

The more I change, the more I stay the same.

The other day, I mentioned a dream I had that characterized marriage as being locked in a dull, dark room. Well, the next night I dreamed that I showed up at my aunt's cottage (my aunt doesn't have a cottage) with my wedding dress (I don't have a wedding dress). #SongoftheDay Easy To Be Hard from Hair (Cheryl Barnes)

Today, as I was leaving my building, one of my neighbours was a total asshole to me. This song has been in my head ever since.  I can be rude and mean to people, but not out of the blue. It's usually because they've done something rude or mean to me. I actually care deeply about everyone I come across, and I guess that's why it hurts me so much when people lack compassion or can't see their way to showing kindness to others.  I grew up in a neighbourhood that's known for drugs and gang violence, and people showed each other more respect there than they do in the ritzy rich-people area I live in now (not because I'm ritzy or rich--because I got lucky when the rental market was in the toilet 15+ years ago).  The moral of the story is that I'd like to be able to leave my house without getting all riled up by jerks, but I don't see that happening any time soon. #SongoftheDay Working in a Coal Mine (Lee Dorsey)

Last week, I wrote you a post about spending 7+ hours at the hospital with my partner. Just a day in the life of Giselle. When we got home from the hospital, I wanted to crash. I was exhausted beyond exhaustion, but I had to make dinner. My partner's doctors keep emphasizing to us how important it is for him to keep eating, even though it hurts, even though he can't stand the sight of food sometimes. They want him to keep eating in order to keep his swallowing muscles in working order, and in order to keep his weight up. The oncological dietitian we met with explained how important it is to pack every bite with protein and fats. He's supposed to eat dairy with the highest fat content we can find. Put butter and gravy on everything. If in doubt, add ice cream. Sounds like a dream, except that my partner can no longer taste anything. Plus, it hurts. It hurts so much my partner's doctors have prescribed him all kind of pain meds to take prior to eating, plus a disgus...

What is this? Where am I? What's it all about?

All good questions. Let me explain. My name is Giselle and I'm your new best friend. Well, maybe not "best friend." A best friend usually listens in addition to talking, but that's not me. What I will do is be here every day, starting June 1 2019, to share with you whichever song pops into my head. Why?  What's the point? Well, here's the thing: I'm a writer. It's a pretty lonely job. Over the years, I've become increasingly socially isolated and you know what? It sucks. It sucks bad. The truth of the matter is that a lot of us are socially isolated, these days. And not just older people--younger ones, too.  There are "friendly visitor" programs for seniors, but those of us under 65 are kind of lost at sea. I speak from experience. I'll be honest with you: I didn't know Badfinger was a band until I googled musicians from Wales. I was familiar with this song, but I never knew who it was by. This year, I've been reviewing old contracts. Specifically, I've been reviewing short story contracts with publishers who placed my work in anthologies. Terms vary, but often publishers asked for an exclusivity period of 1, 3, or 5 years before rights then reverted to me and I could republish those pieces of fiction. Time goes by fast. That's what I've learned. Some of the pieces with the 5-year exclusivity period, I basically forgot about. Five years felt like forever, when I signed those contracts.  Turns out five years goes by in a snap, and I could have published a lot of these stories ages ago. Well, I'm playing catch-up now. I went to YouTube in hopes of stumbling upon a song to include in today's post, and instead I spent way too much time watching videos of people preparing egg dishes. Maybe that makes sense--Easter and all.   This year feels much like last year, in terms of not seeing family at the holidays.  Last Easter was the first holiday where Covid prevented us from seeing each other. I was in the car with my partner, browsing radio stations while we were stuck in traffic on the Don Valley, when this song came on a station I'd never heard of. I contentedly stopped searching and sat back, nodding my head to the music. Grunge is the reason I don't know how to dance. All I know how to do is nod. Before long, my partner commented that this song is very repetitive... which is true, I guess, but seeing as the early 90s was a formative time for me, Nirvana is pure nostalgia.
