#SongoftheDay Falling In Love (Gloria Estefan)

Image
One of my sisters is a decade younger than I am, so I remember all the big events of her baby days. I specifically remember that this song was on the radio a lot when she was little, and she got excited whenever it came on. Unsurprisingly, perhaps, my baby sister's first word was: Uh-oh! The word was applicable, and used by her, in a wide variety of circumstances. I wonder if anyone has ever told my sister the story of her first word. It's funny how, if you have siblings, you just assume they remember everything you remember--and that they remember it exactly the way you do. Who remembers saying their first word? No one. You only know about it because someone recited the story of your life back to you.  There are so many life events we've talked about, in my family, that my baby sister was surprised (shocked, scandalized) to learn. Even if she was around, she was too young to remember some of the most significant shit that went down. She's the lucky one, there.

#SongoftheDay Wow (Beck)

I listened to this song dozens (possibly hundreds?) of times when the album Colors came out and UNTIL TODAY, I thought the lyrics were "luminous moose." Anyway, great song for summer--moose or no moose. #SongoftheDay Month of May (Arcade Fire)

Image
Remember when this record won the Album of the Year Grammy and everyone was like, "Who are The Suburbs?" The Suburbs is one of my favourite theme albums. I remember someone on the internet saying, "Month of May was the first song I ever heard from this album and I was like uh-oh... what is Arcade Fire up to?  But then I listened to this album in its entirety and I understood." #SongoftheDay Mr. Lee (The Bobbettes)

Image
Another crossword-inspired song of the day, here. The clue was: 1957 Bobbettes song that begins "One, two three..." Well, we didn't get this one. As soon as I looked it up on YouTube I was like, "Oh, of course!" In case I haven't mentioned this lately, doo-wop is one of my all-time favourite music genres.  But this one isn't a tune I could pull out of my brain when I needed it. #SongoftheDay Just A Gigolo / I Ain't Got Nobody (Louis Prima)

Image
This is another song that came up in one of our crossword puzzles. I got it immediately, because I associate it with one of my high school friends. I went to school with a lot of dramatical types, and my first encounter with this particular chap was his performance of this number in a top hat and tails. He went on to become an actor and playwright of some renown, which is not surprising and also is quite surprising. Like I say, I went to school with a lot of people who had that certain something--star quality--and while some of them went on to become actual stars, many did not. So why do some folks make it while others peak in high school?  Hard for me to say. I consider myself the peaked-in-high-school type. #SongoftheDay Sukiyaki (Kyu Sakamoto)

Image
One of last week's crossword puzzles had a clue that was something like: Japanese dish or hit song from 1963. My partner got the answer because he actually remembers this tune. I'd never heard it. I think I'd vaguely heard OF it, but I'd never investigated because I figured if it was popular in the 60s it must be a white-guys boyband appropriating a Japanese word to create the kind of song that doesn't age well. I would never have imagined a Japanese pop song was all the rage in the 1960s, but there it is. Or, here it is. Sukiyaki is our song of the day. #SongoftheDay Theme from Knight Rider (Samara Ginsberg)

Image
Saw this on Twitter and had to share. If you're not familiar with this tune, it is the theme song from Knight Rider, which is a splendid show we used to watch in the 80s. David Hasselhoff talked to his car and his car talked back. That's really all you need to know. I dedicate this post to one of my sisters (you know who you are) because she LOVES this show. Even now that the 80s are long gone, she still has a soft spot for KITT (that's the car). #SongoftheDay My Girl (The Temptations)

Image
Another song for our current month: "When it's cold outside, I've got the month of May." The dance routine in this video reminds me of that "Swimming, Swimming in my Swimming Pool" song we used to sing as kids. ("...When days are hot/ When days are cold/ In my swimming pool...") It's an action song, if you aren't familiar. You sing the words and do corresponding actions. My partner and I have been trying to remember all the moves for weeks. We are suckers for nostalgia. #SongoftheDay Queen of the May (Veda Hille)

Image
Before May is out, I want to feature this track. Because it's got "May" in the name. I do have a story about it. When I first saw this video, something about it spoke to me. I remember sending it to my former girlfriend (before we were a couple), thinking it would woo her, somehow. I can't quite speak for my thought process, as this was well over a decade ago. We worked together at the time, and I remember going in the next day and asking her, "Did you get my email? I sent it at three in the morning. It's a music video. You might like it." Another girl walked into our conversation, asking, "A music video? Whose music? Would I like it?" I remember being so irritated, wanting to tell this extraneous girl to leave us alone. I was trying to flirt. Oddly enough, a ten-year relationship started with this video. That relationship ended the way the song does, come to think of it. Metaphorically. I went to a play at the Tarragon and the pr

#SongoftheDay Along the Broken (Mitchell Moffit)

I had so much to say about Owen Pallett yesterday that I didn't get a chance to comment on his looping in that live performance we watched. I find live looping so cool. The first artist I ever saw looping live was Mitchell Moffit, and I believe he performed barefoot, though I could be misremembering. I saw him do a show hosted by Gunnarolla during Nuit Blanche one year. That's back when I could stay up all night. Although, I must admit, one of the reasons I kept going back to this show all evening was that it took place in one of the theatres at TIFF Bell Lightbox, which meant you could actually SIT DOWN! Wow. Sitting. Huge perk. It was only last year that I learned Les Paul and Mary Ford were looping live in the forties! It's still a wonder to watch, even if it's been around that long. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. Tell anyone you kno

#SongoftheDay E is for Estranged (Owen Pallett)

Image
For most people, the music that is most meaningful is the music we listen to at formative stages in our lives--childhood and teen years in particular, possibly into our twenties.  That music generates an easy emotional resonance. We need to work harder if we want to stay in touch with new music as we get older. I've got Owen Pallett to thank for setting me down the road to many of the younger artists I listen to now. He used to be very active on Twitter, and one time he mentioned Katie Dey . So I started listening to her music and following her on Twitter. At the time, Katie Dey was working on her first collaboration with Devi McCallion , so that's how I started listening to  Girls Rituals, and of course Black Dresses with Ada Rook. Following Black Dresses on Twitter, I became aware of Rook&Nomie .  These are all artists we've listened to her on the music blog. Then they tweeted about  Backxwash , so I started listening to her, too.  And I believe it was Bac

#SongoftheDay Afternoon Delight (Starland Vocal Band)

Image
I'm a middle-aged person and I'm living with a partner for the first time. My life has changed immensely in the past year. (If you don't want to hear about my sex life, you should probably stop reading right now.) All my adult life, I've had sex during the day. That's because, until now, I've always been involved with people who were either cheating with me or long-distance or poly or simply promised elsewhere most nights. I am not used to sharing a bed.  Well, I am now, but until recently I wasn't. One big difference between then-times and now-times is that my partner and I have most of our sex in the morning or at night. Either or. Sometimes both. It's lots of sex. It's consistent. But it's not daytime sex. The other morning, we woke up pretty late, so my partner asked, "Should we delay getting up, or should we go for Afternoon Delight?" I thought that was the cutest question, and I opted for Afternoon Delight because i

#SongoftheDay dance song (Dijon)

This is just the most beautiful song of all time. It's from a new album called " How Do You Feel About Getting Married? " So many albums with great names are coming out this month. I love it. #SongoftheDay Kaingin (Pantayo)

Image
I've featured Pantayo previously on the blog, but that was before their self-titled album had been released. Now that it's out and I've listened to it (and listened and listened and listened), I pretty much want to feature every song. I've probably listened to Heto Na a dozen times today alone, and it's got a fun music video, so maybe we'll come back to that one. Today we're listening to Kaingin because I cannot get enough of this track. I love it. #SongoftheDay Let's Hear It for the Boy (Deniece Williams)

Image
At her 85th birthday party, my late grandmother gave a toast to celebrate her sons-in-law. There was no mention of her daughters--the people who had organized the party. Grandma just went on and on about how great her sons-in-law were. Which is true. My uncles are good men. I love them dearly. But my mother and my aunts felt a little irritated that all the maternal affection was dumped on the boys, and there was none for the girls. My mother complained to me that her mom had always been that way. She favoured boys. Actually--funny story--when my grandmother was dying, I spent full days by her side in hospital. There was one day, after she'd been taken off food and water and her body was slowly winding down, that I sat beside her for seven hours, knitting, reading, singing softly the songs her father had sung when she was a child. She did not respond to my presence at all, that day. But, in the evening, my brother walked into her hospital room.  The second he crossed the thres

#SongoftheDay Don't Fear The Reaper (Blue Oyster Cult)

Image
This is a funny post, I promise! It's not a bummer! As I mentioned a few days ago, my partner and I do crosswords together. That's one of our little traditions. We laugh a lot and tell each other stories when a clue or an answer reminds us of something. I recently read an article about how crossword puzzles are designed for old white men--that editors veto clues they don't think their target audience is going to get--and I said to my partner, "Ohhhh I'm not stupid after all!  These puzzles were designed for YOU, not for ME!" So we're doing this crossword and one of the clues is about a classical musician and my partner goes, "You should get this one--remember I told you how she bought my friend's house?" I burst out laughing. Like, this puzzle could not be MORE written for you! It's not just that you've heard of the people it's talking about--you actually KNOW them! Anyway, the reason we're listening to Blue Oyster C

#SongoftheDay Where'er You Walk from Handel's Semele (Robert Murray)

Image
You're not imagining things. We have listened to this aria previously. Don't worry--I have a good reason for the repeat. A while back, I posted a video of Kathleen Battle singing Where'er You Walk. She does a gorgeous job of it, but unfortunately the video I put up has since been taken down from YouTube. The reason I'd posted it in the first place is that my partner's father, who was a vocalist, used to sing this to his (my partner's) mother all the time. My partner adores his late parents. He had a great childhood, and he holds his mother and father in very high regard. Mother's Day was hard for him.  We were sitting at the table after dinner, and he started crying, telling me that just last week we'd done something and he'd thought, "I can't wait to tell Mom!"  And then he remembered that his mother died more than a decade ago. She's still the person he wants to turn to and, since he doesn't believe in an afterlife, he

#SongoftheDay Scuba Party from Catalina Caper (Little Richard)

Image
Sometimes I feel like this blog is gradually evolving into some kind of musical obituary site. Again, I'm bringing you an artist who died recently.  Little Richard brought us many well-known hits and catchy tunes. This isn't one of them. But it's the first one that came to mind when he died, because I have watched Joel and the bots riffing on Catalina Caper at least a dozen times. I've mentioned before, I think, that during my deepest bouts of depression, Mystery Science Theater 3000 kept me alive. Thank you, Little Richard, for being a part of that.  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Henry The VIII, I Am (Herman's Hermits)

Image
When we first started living together, my partner told me a story about friends of his who have little traditions that keep them strong. It was a #relationshipgoals thing, for him. He wanted to build traditions. So I said, well, we can create traditions right from the start. The first one we came up with was this: every time either of us comes or goes, we kiss. As soon as he walks through the door, I come over and give him a kiss. He does the same for me. At this point, even when we're coming and going together (which is most of the time), we'll both walk through the door and kiss. That was an easy tradition to start and continue. One tradition that created itself was "Crossword Puzzle Day." My partner used to always do the crosswords in the Saturday paper himself. Then, one time, he asked if I knew the answer to one of the question. He sucked me in.  Soon, we were doing crosswords together. Now, with not much going on in the world, Saturday has become the mos

#SongoftheDay The Thunder Rolls (Garth Brooks)

Image
I should have posted this song on Sunday, seeing as it was Mother's Day, because this one's going out to my mom. I've mentioned before that my mother doesn't really listen to music, but a couple weeks ago this tune popped into my head and I remembered my mother LOVING it when it first came out in the early 90s.  Every time it came on the car radio, she'd turn up the volume. It's a dramatic song--that's for sure. And I can understand its appeal, to someone who was gearing up to escape an abusive relationship. She didn't end her marriage in quite the way the woman in the song does, but, as a kid, I don't think I was able to credit my mother with the bravery it took to leave a violent partner. I don't think any of us realized, until we were in the thick of it, that things would only get worse. As a family, we lived through years of shit I can't even call to mind because it was that traumatic. I feel for the two of my siblings who remember

#SongoftheDay Sugar, Sugar (The Archies)

Image
Here's another song I've been meaning to showcase for months.  The video's hilarious. That rabbit reminds me of the Jimmy Stewart film "Harvey." If you've never seen that one, it's about a guy whose best friend is a giant invisible rabbit. You would be amazed how many people have told me this song--Sugar, Sugar by The Archies--is one of their Top Ten all-time favourites. If you're one of those people, enjoy! I had planned to post this song months ago, but if I don't do something right away and if I don't write it down, it ain't gonna happen. So My Boy Lollipop didn't get posted. Until now. And I'm posting it now because Millie Small died this week. I really wish I'd posted it earlier. #SongoftheDay Brian Wilson (Barenaked Ladies)

Image
This is such a great song. How could I play Beach Boys yesterday and not follow it up with this track? My partner has a great Beach Boys story: a factory he worked in backed onto a concert venue, so he used to go out back on his breaks and listen to whatever was going on over there. One day, that meant The Beach Boys. He's got lots of great concert stories, but I particularly like the ones about concerts he ended up at by accident. I don't have a story about The Beach Boys, but I do have one about one about the Barenaked Ladies: in the 90s, I had a friend who was a total groupie. She had a huge cruse on Ed Robertson, and she followed the group all over Ontario. The "Ladies" knew her by name. To bring these two stories together (sort of): one time I was out for a walk with my partner when he pointed to a lovely house and said, "Ed Robertson lives there." If only my 90s friend hadn't moved clear across the country! Although, she is now married to a m

#SongoftheDay The Little Old Lady From Pasadena (The Beach Boys)

My partner and I had the radio on today. The station played a commercial (for what, I don't know) that was like "Be sure to call a senior in your life because SENIORS are full of WISDOM!" As a certified, card-carrying senior citizen, my partner burst out laughing. Then the commercial said that the senior you call will certainly REASSURE you that everything's gonna be okay. As a senior with no fewer than three therapists on the go, my partner burst out laughing again. There's a lesson, here, about positive stereotyping, because my partner (a senior) found this radio ad both ridiculous and offensive. All day long, I've been begging him to share his wisdom with me, and he's been patting me on the head, asking, "Does this reassure you?" #SongoftheDay A Sunday Kind of Love (Etta James)

Image
I had a Sunday kind of love this week. It was the best Sunday in recent memory. My partner and I woke up basking in each other's warmth. We spent an easy morning together. I got a lot of work done while he read the paper. We watched a bit of news, did a bit of exercise (stretching etc. in front of the TV). He made us grilled cheese sandwiches for lunch. Later on, we went for a walk in the summertime weather. I put sunblock on my face, but didn't think to get my neck. So that was red when we got home. For dinner, we ate the frozen pizza my partner's been saving for a special occasion. And salad. And a glass of wine (well, half a glass for me--as I get older, my body tends to reject alcohol). Then we watched a series on DVD and I took a warm bath and we went to bed. Oh, and we did a crossword puzzle somewhere in there. It was a perfect Sunday. #SongoftheDay Shoo Fly Pie and Apple Pan Dowdy (Dinah Shore)

I remember this song being in a commercial for Cool Whip or something--maybe in the 80s or 90s? That's the first time I recall hearing it. I didn't know what shoo fly pie or apple pan dowdy were, at the time, and even now I only know from looking them up. Not common desserts, round these parts. #SongoftheDay The Garden Song (John Denver)

Image
Here's a song I grew up with. I wasn't familiar with the word "fertile" back then, so I always thought you needed a piece of "turtle ground." Made sense. This is turtle island, after all. This song popped into my head this morning, when I looked out at my balcony garden. I haven't pulled out last year's dead plants yet.  I keep meaning to do it, but I keep meaning to do a lot of things. #SongoftheDay Tracy (Pontiac Puma)

Image
This song came up on a lo-fi Spotify playlist I put on today. I used to listen to all sorts of music while writing. Can't do it anymore. I find music with lyrics too distracting now. Usually, I put on piano music if I need background noise. Today, piano music wouldn't cut it. My neighbours were screaming at each other and I needed music that would block out their argument a little better. When this track came up, I had to stop writing because of all the sampled dialogue from The Philadelphia Story in it. Can't complain. I'm really into this one. My writing is done for the day, so I'll just keep going. On and on. #SongoftheDay Now is the Month of Maying (The King's Singers)

Image
I have been waiting almost a year to bring you this song. It always reminds me of the 90s sitcom Third Rock from the Sun, because there's an episode where one character's madrigal group sings it. Took me forever to choose which video to bring you. Not that I mind listening to this tune over and over. It is, hands-down, my favourite madrigal. Every time I hear it, I get a little pep in my step. Ultimately, I chose this vintage King's Singers performance because of the outfits. And that one guy's moustache. Happy May Day!
