#SongoftheDay Here Comes the Rain Again (Eurythmics)

It was Thanksgiving here in Canada, this past weekend. Even though my partner and I never have company for Thanksgiving dinner, it still means a lot of cooking for me. It's a big meal.

This year was tough because apparently my partner had emailed a friend a couple months ago saying he figured he'd have his tastebuds back in time for Thanksgiving. (If you're new around here, he lost his sense of taste during cancer treatment this summer.)

Well, my partner doesn't have his tastebuds back. What's worse is that he'd been feeling better over the past few weeks, and this weekend the extreme fatigue and pain he experienced during and after radiation came back full force. His oncologist said to expect this--that recovery was not linear, and that he could start feeling better and then suddenly feel worse again--but the setback has made him angry, irritable, depressed, and a whole lot more. 

As I write this, it's storming outside. It's been grey all day, and very very windy. Then the rain set in, and it hasn't let up. I feel trapped in this sad and angry house. I keep telling myself how lucky I am to have a roof over my head. I'm hunkered down under a duvet to keep warm, but all I want to do is go outside. Walk and walk and keep walking.

But the rain is keeping me in my place, for now.

I wonder when this will end.

You know what I would love to find? Information on menopause and menopause-related topics aimed at trans and nonbinary people. #SongoftheDay Blue Velvet (Bobby Vinton)

My partner and I went to a barn sale (in large part because I wanted to find out what a barn sale was) (my partner kept saying to me, "But I don't want to buy a barn..." har-dee-har-har) and the barn turned out to be stocked with actual antiques as well as items that might not be old enough to be technically considered antiques, but were certainly old enough to be considered nostalgic and/or "before-my-time." The barn owner was selling a couple of juke boxes in stunning condition. When we approached one of them, it was playing Blue Velvet. I wanted to take my partner in my arms and dance him around the barn (I always end up leading if I don't consciously allow him to do so) but the guy selling the juke boxes came over to show us the internal workings, how the records played, how he'd repaired them to get them back in working order, etc. It was all very interesting (I love juke boxes), but the conversation wasn't condusive to romance. #SongoftheDay You've Made Me So Very Happy (Blood, Sweat and Tears)

I can't remember if I've told you this story before, but talking about the movie Better Than Chocolate the other week brought it to mind: Many years ago, a TV network here in Canada would air Canadian short films late at night. It was a half-hour program, but the shorts would generally be under five minutes long.  The only one I remember was a comedic short about a butch lesbian who couldn't stop sweating, especially when she laid eyes on her crush. I specifically remember the character shoving maxi pads under her arms to keep the sweat in check. I have tried and tried to track down this short film, but with no luck. I'm guessing it was the 90s when I saw it, which would mean I saw this short before I saw Better Than Chocolate. Now that my voice has finally returned to me, I've been driving my partner nuts with the constant singing. Poor guy. He had to suffer through my performance of this song tonight while we washed the dishes. #SongoftheDay A Bushel and a Peck (Sharon, Lois and Bram)

Apparently this song is from Guys and Dolls. I've seen Guys and Dolls a number of times on stage, but I don't remember this song being in it. I do remember hearing Sharon, Lois and Bram sing it on their TV show when I was a kid. This is exactly the kind of song I want to share with my granddaughter. I can't remember if I told you that we've spontaneously burst into song a few times--my partner, my stepdaughter and I--to entertain our granddaughter. Technology is amazing. We can sing together even though we're on opposite sides of the planet. We'll have to sing this one. The trick is finding songs we know, all three of us, but it turns out there are many such songs. We even tried Row, Row, Row Your Boat in a round. My partner loves a round. Reminds him of camp. #SongoftheDay Hideaway (Randy Moore and Cindy Smith)

A rare treat from the 1987 movie R.O.T.O.R. which I have seen many times, courtesy of RiffTrax.  Most of what I do when I'm ill (aside from sleep) is listen to RiffTrax or old MST3k episodes I have seen a million times already. I find them comforting. Not really sure why. Possibly because MST3k got me through one of my worst depressive periods ever. Laughing when you are severely depressed feels amazing.  When I'm sick... I don't know. When I'm sick for extended periods, life begins to feel pointless really quickly. Being able to laugh at something (inwardly, this time, because laughing out loud brings on painful coughing fits) does tend to give me the feeling that maybe life is worth living, even if I'm not completely sure why. Yesterday I was telling you about stamp collecting. The reason my partner and I were talking about stamps in the first place is that a friend of his used to collect toy cars. This friend recently sold his entire toy car collection and decided he was going to collect stamps instead. My partner and I were talking about collections and collecting, and it occured to me that there's nothing I collect and there's nothing I feel inclined to collect. I enjoy that other people have fun collecting things. I'm not anti-collecting. But for me, having grown up in a hoarder home, the idea of collecting is kind of mashed up with accumulating. I know there's a difference, but I have a compulsion to get rid of things rather than keep them. But, you know, if I HAD TO collect something... I mean, stamps are small. After days of not being able to leave the house due to migraines AND salmonella poisoning (what a combination...) I finally went out to buy a few groceries. I often use a walker to get around, and that was the case today.  On my way home, there was a snooty rich lady standing in the sidewalk so that I couldn't get by. I asked her if she could move and she didn't even look at me, just took the slightest half-step forward so she was still blocking my path. There was no way I could get by her with my walker. She also had a dog. Her dog was completely blocking my path. I asked her if she could move her dog and she didn't even acknowledge my existence. She did not move her dog.  It's always bothered me, being treated this way--being treated like I'm so inconsequential that I'm not even worth acknowledging--but I think it bothers me in a much deeper way when I'm using a mobility aid. #SongoftheDay "Largo al factotum" from Rossini's THE BARBER OF SEVILLE (baritone Vito Priante & accompanist Michael Shannon)

This is a rehearsal session from a fun production of The Barber of Seville that my partner and I saw together. It came to mind today because we drove past a barber shop called The Barber of Seville (better than the hair salon I used to walk by called Sweeny Todd's...) and about five seconds later we arrived at a lift bridge that was... ummm... lifted? There was a huge ship going through, so we had to wait for a while, but that was okay because it gave me an opportunity to sing this aria at my partner. You know how much he loves being sung at by me--I talk about it all the time. And, of course, there's very little of this aria I actually know, so I was basically just singing the "della citta" (sp?) part at the end over and over. It was great.
