#SongoftheDay The Warrior (Scandal ft. Patty Smyth)

This is a song I've known forever (well, since it came out), but I never knew who sang it. I often don't know who sings what songs. I'm not a music expert. I'm just a person who likes music.

Anyway, when I spotted this video on YouTube I finally understood a riff from Miami Connection, which I have watched many dozens of times. (Actually, I usually just listen to it--I'm not sure I've ever watched it with my eyes.) This movie is about a karate rock band populated by orphan housemates who hate stupid drugs. I'll have to play you music from the film one day. I genuinely like it, but I'm a sucker for anything 80s. 

The riff I've got in mind is sung, and it's something like "I'm not Patty Smyth--the one who spells it with a Y from Scandal, I'm not her." I never knew who this riff referred to, and I thought it was talking about the TV show called Scandal, which I never saw. I didn't know there was a band called Scandal. Except I guess I knew their music.

Why does this video remind me both of Bladerunner and Starlight Express? If you combined the two, I doubt very much you'd get this.

It's easy to get addicted to the news, these days. The world is a 24/7 train wreck. How can we look away? My mother's basically been self-isolating since January. #SongoftheDay Rimsky-Korsakov's Sheherazade (Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, Elim Chan)

This weekend, I took a much-needed day off from hospital duty to go to the symphony. I've never seen the place so packed, but it was no surprise, with a double-bill like Rachmaninoff's 2nd piano concerto and Scheherazade. Elim Chan did a powerhouse job. I couldn't believe my luck when I found this video of her conducting Scheherazade on YouTube. Witness the journey! This concert was an experience, I tell you. The tickets were my belated Christmas gift to my parter (and also his Valentine's Day gift, because I haven't been terribly organized lately...) and he went on and on about how much he enjoyed the performance. I needed new pyjamas, so, naturally, I went to the supermarket. They sell clothes for cheap. I am nothing if not cheap. Whenever people buy me pyjamas (and by "people" I mean my mother, because she is the only person who buys me pyjamas), they buy me flannel pyjamas. As a permimenopausal person, let me tell you, flannel does not work. Even when I sleep naked, I wake up drenched in sweat. So I needed to find something I could sleep in that wasn't hot, and what I found (at the supermarket) were these adorable soft fluttery little shorts. And they were made of a printed fabric. And that print was of sea flora, tridents, and purple Ursula heads.  Ursula, from The Little Mermaid. Every time the commercial comes on, he notes that it's remarkably well-done, but since when do people grab their butts and sing about diarrhea onscreen? 1989, I guess? A grocery flyer came through my mail slot today. Across the top, it said: BACK TO ROUTINE. As soon as I read that, this song jumped into my head. I've been listening to it ever since. Over the holidays, visitors to this site dropped drastically. It worried me, I must admit. But the moment this BACK TO ROUTINE grocery flyer entered my apartment, visitors magically returned to the blog. What a relief. We've been listening to some pretty heavy songs the past few days. We need a break. This is a song my father used to sing to me, as a child. Inspired by it, I stuck a piece of bright blue bubble gum to my bedpost (I wanted to find out for myself the answer to the question this song poses), but I got in trouble when my mother, who apparently was not familiar with the song, spotted my bedpost gum. So I still don't know the answer. A question for the ages... Although we have separate residences, my partner and I spend most of our time together--either both of us at his house or both of us at my apartment. It's increasingly rare that we spend time away from one another, and when we do, I am astounded by how much I miss him. Right away!  The reason this amazes me is that I lived alone for 20 years.  I used to be used to being alone. Now I'm not. And I get so instantly lonely that I worry I don't have the emotional resilience (or whatever) to take care of myself. Emotionally. And resiliently. Or something. Was I stronger on my own? I mean... no. I was never not depressed throughout those two decades of living by myself. My mental health was significantly worse back then.  For the past hour, I've been mired in nostalgia.  Lately, I've been thinking about the fairy tale books I had when I was a child. These books were mostly from the 70s, so I remember the colour schemes as being primarily orange and brown--the colours of the 70s. The thing is, I can't trust my memory. There's a book that exists in my head, but I can't seem to find any evidence of it in the real world. If it weren't for Covid, I would go to my mother's house and dig through her basement. She never throws things away, so if that book existed, she probably still has it. The song we're listening to is a gorgeous setting of a rhyme featured in one of the fairy tale books I had, as a kid.   The Real Mother Goose was originally published in 1916, and the witch on the cover scared me.
