#SongoftheDay Maybe Tomorrow (Stereophonics)

You think we're listening to Stereophonics because the word came up in a song the other day, but no! We're listening to them because they are Welsh. And I'm going to admit something shameful: even though one of my grandmothers was from Wales, I still can never tell whether a character on a TV show is played by a Welsh actor who has an actual Welsh accent, or whether it's an actor doing a bad Welsh accent. Isn't that awful? I should be able to tell, considering my partial Welshness. 

And I spent a lot of time with that grandmother, as a kid. She used to babysit me and my cousin while our parents were at work. My earliest memories are of watching I Dream of Jeannie with my Welsh grandmother. Mind you, by the time I was born my grandmother did have a type of facial paralysis that affected her speech, so I'm not sure what her accent sounded like before then.

Anyway, that's my shameful announcement for today: I can't tell a real Welsh accent from a fake one, even  though my own grandmother was from Wales. Plenty more shame where that came from.

I needed to give myself a bit of time before telling this story, because what I'm going to tell you about was very upsetting. Made me cry a lot. And I knew that as soon as I told you about it, I would start crying all over again. So I've taken a few days.  Here we go. Last week I had a medical appointment. #SongoftheDay Sixteen Tons (Tennessee Ernie Ford)

I just threw out my 2007 calendar--the one that had all my appointments, deadlines and work shifts written in it.   My writing career began in 2006.   In 2007, according to this calendar, I worked two jobs (warehouse work on weekdays, retail on the weekends) plus any temp stuff and casual labour I could cram in on the side. And throughout all that, I was writing books, building my business, marketing, really going at it. Oh--and I did volunteer work at a women's shelter too. I have no idea where I found the hours. I worked seven days a week outside the house, plus writing?  When did I find the time?   Looking at that calendar was a real eye-opener. It made me even more grateful than usual for the life I have now.  My writing business supports me.  I don't need to take on outside work.  Thank goodness.  I've been watching my Simpsons DVDs lately, and the first episode I put on was the Thelma and Louise one with Marge and her neighbour. This song pops up twice in that episode.  Creepy video, right? It's a scene from a 1965 movie called Ski Party. Based on this clip, I'm not tempted to see it. My partner and I had the radio on today. The station played a commercial (for what, I don't know) that was like "Be sure to call a senior in your life because SENIORS are full of WISDOM!" As a certified, card-carrying senior citizen, my partner burst out laughing. Then the commercial said that the senior you call will certainly REASSURE you that everything's gonna be okay. As a senior with no fewer than three therapists on the go, my partner burst out laughing again. There's a lesson, here, about positive stereotyping, because my partner (a senior) found this radio ad both ridiculous and offensive.  Last week, my partner was talking about the movie Midnight Cowboy , which I'd never seen. I laughed because I've been watching Futurama on DVD lately, and the film is spoofed briefly in one episode. I never got the reference until my partner described Midnight Cowboy to me. Ever since, I've had this song--Riptide--in my head, just floating around back there, not demanding terribly much attention.  This morning, I recited some of the lyrics to my partner and said, "Do you think he's talking about Midnight Cowboy ?" My partner had, unsurprisingly, never heard Riptide. I honestly don't know where he's been for the past 40 years, because he doesn't seem to be familiar with any music that was created after 1979. Today I feel like that kid who tries to help their parents clean, but ends up making the house way messier than it started out. (I'm thinking of the video my stepdaughter sent us, of our granddaughter sweeping Cheerios into a dustpan and then not noticing as she spilled those same Cheerios out of the dustpan, spraying them around the room like confetti.) My messy kid-feelings started when my partner told me he was going to walk to the grocery store in town to buy lettuce. It's strawberry season, so I asked him to pick up strawberries too. When he got home, the tote bag he'd carried the produce in had not only leaked but also ground strawberry juice into his very light-coloured khaki shorts. They were smeared red in multiple places. I felt like this was my fault, even though he kept assuring me it was not, because I had requested the strawberries. Music from the late 80s/early 90s seems to appeal to many of the visitors here on the blog. I couldn't be more pleased, because this was a formative time period for me, musically.  In other ways, too, but I find myself gravitating more and more to this music.  Every time a song (like this one) hits me square in the nostalgia centre, I look it up and it's from 1989, 1990, or 1991. Those were the years I spent taping my favourite Much Music videos onto videocassettes plastered with music note stickers, so it makes senses. I don't think the me I was thirty years ago would ever have envisioned life shaping up as it has done. I don't think the me I was three years ago would have.  For the past hour, I've been mired in nostalgia.  Lately, I've been thinking about the fairy tale books I had when I was a child. These books were mostly from the 70s, so I remember the colour schemes as being primarily orange and brown--the colours of the 70s. The thing is, I can't trust my memory. There's a book that exists in my head, but I can't seem to find any evidence of it in the real world. If it weren't for Covid, I would go to my mother's house and dig through her basement. She never throws things away, so if that book existed, she probably still has it. The song we're listening to is a gorgeous setting of a rhyme featured in one of the fairy tale books I had, as a kid.   The Real Mother Goose was originally published in 1916, and the witch on the cover scared me. Baritone Lucia Lucas probably has the best opera singer name in the world. When she took on the role of Don Giovanni at the Tulsa Opera, she was the first trans singer to do so--rather, she was the first trans singer to perform any leading role in the United States.  Today we're listening to her sing an aria from Verdi's Macbeth, an opera about which I know absolutely nothing. I didn't even know it existed until right now.  I'm going out on a limb, here, but I'm guessing it's based on that Shakespeare play? The one called Macbeth? #SongoftheDay Big Butter And Egg Man (Louis Armstrong, May Alix)

Yesterday I told you about my partner's favourite number from the jazz festival. This one was mine. I'd never actually heard it before and had no idea it was a jazz standard (despite the fact that I listened to a jazz radio station for years). I had to do a bit of digging to find out who was the vocalist on this 1926 (yes, that's almost 100 years ago) track (her name is May Alix) and that led me down a slight rabbit hole, where I discovered that "butter and egg man" was 1920s slang for a big spender: a travelling salesman who spent his cash freely at nightclubs. At the jazz festival, various people were dancing to the Dixieland band--most notably, a man who looked (and dressed) exactly like Colonel Sanders.
