I remember this song from my childhood, although I never knew what it was called or who it was by, back then. 

Yesterday, I realized I haven't listened to new music in maybe three or four years. I haven't listened to contemporary pop music since the 90s, but at some point in the 2000s, I started listening to indie rock as it emerged. 

I never intended to stop listening to new music. It definitely wasn't deliberate, on my part. Looking back, it seems like I stopped listening to new music around the time I turned 40. I guess that's when nostalgia became more attractive than novelty, and I switched over to listening to songs that gave me comfort. Like this one. And so many more.

I have been incredibly ill. Emergency room, IV fluids, diagnostic equipment, more meds.  I'm so sorry for taking off without letting you know what was going on, but there are times when it can't be helped. We're moving next week. We're not happy about the move, but it's happening nonetheless. I'm going to miss this little house. I know how fortunate I am to live indoors at all, but the past three years have been the only time in my entire adult life when I've been able to live in a house, and going back to living in a high rise isn't something I'm enthusiastic about. The house and town (despite being very small--both the house and the town) are way too expensive to live in. Plus, there's the lack of access to medical care and public transportation.  So we're moving. I'm really sad. And stressed. And busy with all the packing. And my health is poor, as usual. Ill health makes sadness and stress even harder to cope with. That's the big reason I haven't been around.  I had an episode of The Simpsons on last week called Lady Bouvier's Lover, I think?  It's the one where Grandpa Simpson courts Marge's mother. I've referred to it often during Covid, because it's got that one scene where Grandpa goes into the retirement home to grab Mrs. Bouvier and he comes out with the wrong woman, and that old lady says, "Can I come too?"   You know what I'm talking about. Anyway, I quote that line a lot, these days. I've got nothing going on, so any time my partner is going anywhere, I'm right on that "Can I come too?" At the end of the episode, there's a spoof on this song called "The Sound of Grandpa," which is what I was going to play for you... but my partner loves Simon and Garfunkel, so I'm going for the original. #SongoftheDay Cheers Theme: Where Everybody Knows Your Name (Gary Portnoy)

A lot has changed since I first created this blog. Even more changes happened while the blog was on hiatus. Most notably, my partner was diagnosed with cancer. He is currently receiving treatments, the side effects of which make every day incredibly arduous. When you become a caregiver, everybody tells you that you have to take care of yourself first--the whole oxygen mask thing. Even my partner tells me I need to take care of myself first, particularly because I have chronic health conditions that make it almost impossible to function some days. It feels kind of ridiculous sometimes, the two of us trying to take care of each other when we're both sick. We need so much help, and right now we have nothing. All we've got is each other. Every time someone tells me to take care of myself first, I wonder how I'm supposed to do that when my partner's needs are so immediate and life-or-death. He is not a demanding person. Cancer is demanding. It takes over your entire life...

What is this? Where am I? What's it all about?

All good questions. Let me explain. My name is Giselle and I'm your new best friend. Well, maybe not "best friend." A best friend usually listens in addition to talking, but that's not me. What I will do is be here every day, starting June 1 2019, to share with you whichever song pops into my head. Why?  What's the point? Well, here's the thing: I'm a writer. It's a pretty lonely job. Over the years, I've become increasingly socially isolated and you know what? It sucks. It sucks bad. The truth of the matter is that a lot of us are socially isolated, these days. And not just older people--younger ones, too.  There are "friendly visitor" programs for seniors, but those of us under 65 are kind of lost at sea. I speak from experience. Oh, this song... I've started checking out CDs from the library (actual physical CDs from the actual physical library) and was lucky enough to find two albums from Purity Ring at one location. I was familiar with Purity Ring from back when I used to listen to CBC Radio Two.  Pretty sure they got a lot of airplay on a show called The Signal, which I miss every day of my life. This song, Bodyache, is the second track on an album called ANOTHER ETERNITY .  It's so pleading and pained, and when I heard the line "I cried until my body ached," I knew I'd come back to this song when I needed it. And I did, the next time I cried like that--a full-body sob, to the point where you feel like you're going to throw up and you think it's impossible for more tears to come out. A third day of Broadway music! This song always makes me think of my career as a writer. Or, rather, the gatekeeping performed by other writers. It reminds me of that joke--the one about the surgeon who says "You're a writer, eh? Yeah, I always figured I'd write a book when I retired." And then the writer says "When I retire, I figure I'll take up surgery." I'm not saying writing is easy--it's not. Making actual money as a writer is excruciatingly difficult (at least, for me it is), but it doesn't offend me when people who have other careers express an interest in writing a book. I tell them they should go for it. Anyone should. I didn't leave my mother's womb with a pen in hand (ouch). I had another career before I started writing. But you know what?
