#SongoftheDay DAP (Lady Bunny & Flotilla Debarge)

Image
We've been listening to opera all week, but today we're breaking away for a parody of Cardi B's WAP. Why? Because I've been taking baths lately and it gives me time to think--too much time to think. I don't like baths. I always feel like I'm wasting time when I'm sitting there soothing my undercarriage. My body's not giving me much choice these days. My own perimenopausal pussy causes me a multitude of problems (including but not limited to a herpes outbreak, currently), and that's in addition to the hemorrhoids that are nearly ever-present nowadays. My body used to be a source of pleasure. Now it's worn and torn brings me pain and irritation. I miss my WAP. I've traded it for a DAP. That's what I was thinking about in the tub. I found myself wondering if anyone had made a parody called DAP. Sure enough...  This video is age-restricted, so you'll have to click through to Youtube in order to watch it:  https://www.youtube.com/

#SongoftheDay Pietà, rispetto, amore from Verdi's Macbeth (Lucia Lucas)

Image
Baritone Lucia Lucas probably has the best opera singer name in the world. When she took on the role of Don Giovanni at the Tulsa Opera, she was the first trans singer to do so--rather, she was the first trans singer to perform any leading role in the United States.  Today we're listening to her sing an aria from Verdi's Macbeth, an opera about which I know absolutely nothing. I didn't even know it existed until right now.  I'm going out on a limb, here, but I'm guessing it's based on that Shakespeare play? The one called Macbeth? If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. This week we're listening to trans opera singers here on the music blog. Adrian Angelico is up today. He's a Norwegian mezzo and one of the few men specializing in trouser roles. #SongoftheDay "Somewhere" from West Side Story (Breanna Sinclairé with The Colorado Symphony)

I'm researching trans opera singers this week, and I came across Breanna Sinclairé in my studies. There's an extensive introduction in the video, so I'll let you listen. #SongoftheDay Breathe Aria from Good Country (Holden Madagame)

Image
I ask google a lot of questions. Just now, I realized I couldn't think of any trans opera singers. So I asked google, "Are there any trans opera singers?" I mean, I figured there must be. I'd just never heard them sing. Well, I can't say that anymore! And neither can you! Today we're listening to Holden Madagame, who trained as a mezzo and sings tenor roles now. The aria we're hearing is from Good Country, which Holden's website describes as "a newly composed opera about the life of transgender stagecoach driver Charley Parkhurst," composed by Keith Allegretti, libretto by Cecelia Raker Ehrenfeld. #SongoftheDay Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow (The Rivingtons)

This song was in a crossword we did last night. I think the clue Papa-Oom-___-___. We knew what the answer sounded like, but we didn't know how to spell the sound. We were way off. I think our first guess was Moa-Moa and then we tried something else. I wouldn't have guessed "Mow" because, to me, that looks like you're mowing the lawn. But, hey, we got there eventually. #SongoftheDay You've Really Got A Hold On Me (Smokey Robinson and The Miracles)

Today we turned on the heat for the first time this year. It was cold enough this morning that I wrapped my arms around my partner to warm him up. "Hold me, hold me, hold me" has been going through my head all day. #SongoftheDay Brilliance (Giselle Renarde/Atmospheric Tranquility Tones)

Image
I originally released this album under a keywordy made-up artist name becuase I figured people would stumble upon it more easily that way. After I released my " Beautiful Noise " album, I discovered that way more people listened to an album by Giselle Renarde than an album by Atmospheric Tranquility Tones. I have really low self-esteem and I pretty much think I'm worthless and I'm nothing and my name is not a draw, but it turns out... well, I guess it is. So I decided to change the metadata for my album " Mindfulness Music for a New Age " a couple weeks ago. The music from this album is very electronic and reminds me of the New Age music I used to listen to in the 90s. Some tracks feature my very loud air conditioner , which I recorded, distorted and looped. It's not featured on this particular track, but you'll come across it if you listen to the full album . If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every

#SongoftheDay Creep (Arlo Parks)

I feel like this isn't the first time I've posted a cover of this particular Radiohead song, but it's a track I think a lot of us relate to. I'm much more incommunicative than I'd like to be right now. I'm not having a good week, and I feel guilty about that because the Instagram version of my life looks so glossy and good, but I know what's beneath the surface and it's so precarious I feel like I'm falling already. #SongoftheDay Who Put the Bomp? (Barry Mann)

Image
I don't know why this song is stuck in my head, but I've been singing it around the house all day. This is another one of those songs I listened to when I was growing up. It was released in 1961, which means it was only about 20 years old when I heard it on the oldies radio station. I've mentioned before that I'm shocked every time I hear music from my own childhood on the oldies station, but I guess I shouldn't be. The 80s were a lot closer to the 60s than the now-times are to then. #SongoftheDay Lolita (Lana Dey Rey)

Image
As I write this, I've got Born to Die blasting through my headphones. I've been living in a highrise apartment building for 18 years and my brain is broken as a result. Well, my brain was already broken, but it's even more broken now.  It's amazing how many people who have never lived in an apartment block tell me I'm too sensitive to noise, but I once lived through nearly 2 years of daily jackhammering. It broke me down so bad. I could not function. I honestly could not even dress myself. I'd be woken up by the concrete structure of my building being jackhammered and it was like having scrambled eggs for brains. I would stare at my dresser and legitimately not know how to get the clothes from the drawers to my body. Today's not as bad as that. Not as bad, but still not great. Every weekday for the past 3-4 months, there is constant drilling through concrete. It's not as loud as the jackhammering, but I need to wear earplugs all day when I'm here,

#SongoftheDay Salzedo "Chanson dans la nuit" (Ahya Simone)

Image
Trans talent is all around us. Today we're listening to the only harpist who has ever been featured here on the blog, Ahya Simone. I just remembered something: when I couldn't sleep last night, I kept telling myself I should find out more about the Harpies--the mythical... somethings. Did they have wings? I don't remember. I didn't look them up.  But didn't they screech? Why were they called Harpies? Harps don't screech. Harps make beautiful music. #SongoftheDay Ooh Child (The Five Stairsteps)

Image
Thanksgiving was last weekend, here in Canada. I happened to call my mother's house on Sunday afternoon and it happened that she was hosting all my siblings for a holiday meal. My family was observing Thanksgiving without me. They didn't invite me or even tell me about it beforehand. I don't think they ever would have if I hadn't caught them in the act. This summer, my mother let it slip that she'd invited all my siblings over to celebrate a belated Christmas. They didn't invite me, and they clearly weren't going to tell me about it after the fact. I only found out because my mother tripped over her own lies. My partner tried to console me by saying that my family obviously thinks of him as my new family, which is a nice thought... but there's got to be more to it. I just don't understand. Why is my family cutting me out of all their holiday gatherings? What did I do to deserve this? If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you

#SongoftheDay Our House (Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young)

Image
When I nap, I go full out. I can't nap for five or ten minutes. It's three hours or nothing. I need to get my full REM cycle in. I just woke up from a long-ass nap where I had a disheartening dream. I dreamed my partner and I bought a house on a beach. It was actually just a garage or a shack, and it was so small we had to sleep on a bed outside in the sand, but we were really happy about our purchase and our simple, small home looking out across the water. Then in my dream, my mother came to visit. She started pointing out all the bad things about our little house and telling me it was too small for the two children my partner and I suddenly had. Plus my mother pointed out that I was pregnant with another. The house just wouldn't do. No sense analyzing my own dream in public, but I can tell you this much: it felt a lot like real life. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell

#SongoftheDay I'm Like A Bird (Nelly Furtado)

My partner and I have been working on a gigantic crossword puzzle since July. We're getting close to finished (close but no cigar, as my grandfather used to say) and one of the clue was about this song. I think it said "Singer of I'm Like A Bird ."  My partner and I both got that one. #SongoftheDay Chasing Cars (Snow Patrol)

Image
I woke up with this song in my head. My partner wasn't beside me. He'd gotten out of bed at 3:30 in the morning. These days, he's got a lot on his mind. His apartment is way too expensive, so we've been looking for a new place.  This is supposed to be one of those fun times in a couple's life, but I come home every day with a splitting headache and zero energy. I'm getting next to no work done and that's frustrating. More than that, I hate to see the most important person in my life feeling so stressed out. Most days, I just want to stay in bed with my partner at my side and forget everything that's going on outside our house and inside our minds. #SongoftheDay Want What You Got (The Beaches)

Image
This song pops into my head way too often, and it's in there again today. I'm doing an online course in managing emotions (ask my partner if it's working--he would tell you it's not) and one of the lessons mentioned, in passing, the difference between envy and jealousy. I'd always wondered what the difference was. Now I know that I have a problem with jealousy, but not with envy. According to the reading material, envy is what we're hearing about in this song: wanting what someone else has. Jealousy, by contrast, is... oh, now I wish I'd taken notes... what did the course teach me? I'm paraphrasing, here, but basically jealousy is the fear that something will destabilize a personal relationship. I wish I could remember the exact wording, but I'm a bad student, clearly. Anyway, jealousy is a big problem for me. I'm always afraid everything will steal my person away from me. But envy isn't an issue of mine. I don't tend to want anythi

#SongoftheDay California Dreamin (The Mamas and The Papas)

Image
This week it's Songs of Fall, brought to you by K-Tel, etc. etc. Althought I guess this is actually a winter song. Always strikes me as autumnal, for whatever reason. My partner and I learned how to solve cryptic crosswords during the pandemic, and it's one of my favourite things we do together.  I think I enjoy it so much because it's very challenging, there are still puzzles we can't finish or get less than 50% on (my partner always calculates how well we did), but there are also puzzles we get 100% on. Every time I come up with an answer (or we come up with one together, which is often how it works), I feel very accomplished. I don't feel that way too often, so it's a treat. The reason I'm telling you about crypic crosswords today is that we worked on one last month that had Mama Cass as a solution. It was the first one we got on the puzzle. My partner put the paper down on the table, I saw something about a 60s quartet, and I think there was a word i

For the first time in my life, I'm starting to worry about my future. I'm self-employed. I have no safety net. If I can't look at my computer for days (weeks...) on end, what then? I've been struggling with my physical and mental health lately. Problems in one domain necessarily exacerbate problems in the other.  Today is the first day in a while that I didn't wake up in horrible pain. I LOVE Shad and I've been obsessed with this track ever since I heard it for the first time the other day. I love this video, too. Shad's work is so full of humour and I adore his self-effacing approach.
