#SongoftheDay Duke of Earl (Gene Chandler)

 My partner started singing this song the other day (I say "started" because he didn't finish) and I always try not to make any sudden movements when my partner sings. He is so shy about his singing voice and it happens so rarely that when he pipes up, I just keep doing what I was doing. Sometimes I'm singing and he joins in. In that case, I keep singing. 

This time, I think we were doing a crossword. All I got out of him was "Duke, duke, duke, duke of Earl," but that's more singing than I usually hear out of his mouth.

Auto-tweet appears to be busted again. #SongoftheDay It's A New Day (Sailor Moon)

The other day, I was so depressed I slept all morning and spent the entire afternoon watching astrological tarot readings on YouTube. One of the tarot readers said something directed primarily at those of us experiencing depression: she said it's useful to wake up every morning and remind yourself that it's a new day. Today doesn't have to be like yesterday. At the time, it sounded overly simplistic, but this morning I woke up with this song in my head and everything clicked into place. I was like oh... she was right... I don't have to believe I'm a useless human just because I believed that yesterday. I can get out of bed, I can get some work done, and I can feel good about myself. I met my best friend when we were in high school. After 25 years of friendship, I pretty much know what to expect from her.  I know that she'll retreat when she needs help the most.  She lives with a lot of serious illnesses and spends a lot of time in the hospital.  I've come to understand that, if she's sick, I won't hear from her. I'll ask how she's doing, but she won't answer until she's home again. I worry about her a lot, because she's often so ill doctors don't think she'll make it.  She is one of the most determined people I know. Just staying alive is a major challenge for her, but she does it. It's been twenty years since we've lived in the same city, so we don't get to spend much time together. I miss hanging out, like we did in high school. We used to bake cookies together.  She's an amazing baker.  She's good at everything she tries, but not in a way that makes you jealous. I'll be honest with you: I didn't know Badfinger was a band until I googled musicians from Wales. I was familiar with this song, but I never knew who it was by. I've been in horrible pain all day (pardon any typos--thinking and typing are super difficult right now) and I just remembered a rant that's been inside me since last year. So buckle up, I guess. My partner and I listen to a classical radio station he refers to as "the old people channel" because it's very much geared toward older people. They regularly play radio spots from the head of a seniors' organization. Last year the head of this organization did a radio spot condemning the media for its "negative portrayal" of older people by showing them using "walkers and canes." I hear a record scratch in my head, which probably shows my age. But I'm actually not a senior. I'm in my forties.  I use both a walker AND a cane (not at the same time). And I would really love to know how using a walker and/or a cane equates to "negative portrayal" of persons in any age category. The only thing I can come up with is that disability = ...

I was just looking at a post of songs for grieving on a funeral company's website, and this one topped the list. Sorry to make you cry again! If you are mourning right now, I want you to know that you are not alone. I'm right there with you. And music is ALWAYS there. I know it helps me. This theme was playing on the radio while my partner and I were eating dinner. I hadn't heard the radio host introduce the piece, and I said to my partner, "This is so familiar. What is it?"  Apparently he said something. We'll come back to that.  I kept eating and then asked him, "It's movie music, right?"  He gave me this flat look and then said, "James Bond. It's John Barry music."  That's when I realized he had already told me exactly that information and I hadn't heard what he'd said, and instead of asking him to repeat himself, I'd merely nodded. I did all this without realizing it, in the moment. It didn't click that I hadn't heard him. It didn't click that I nodded instead of acknowleding that I hadn't heard him. None of this was conscious. #SongoftheDay Personality (Lloyd Price)

Remember when this song was made into a Cheez Whiz (sp?) commercial? Would have been in the late 80s or early 90s. That commercial (and thus this song) popped into my head this morning as I was reading an old story of mine. I thought to myself, "Wow, this story has personality!"  And I burst into song. My partner used to love Cheez Whiz before his cancer treatment. Radiation changed the way he tastes things, meaning most things taste like nothing. When he was undergoing radiation he had to eat mostly creamy foods because hard foods are too difficult to consume when your throat is full of radiation burns. Having to eat creamy stuff all the time really put him off that particular texture, and now that things like Cheeze Whiz and peanut butter, which he used to eat every day, taste like nothing and have an unappealing texture, he just avoids them. I just watched an episode of Murder She Wrote that had Robert Goulet in it. Not for long, though. I won't spoiler the episode for you, even if it is from the 80s (and I'm pretty sure it is), by stating or not stating that his character is or is not a murder victim.
