My partner and I usually listen to a classical music radio station while we eat dinner--he calls it "the old people station," and the ads they play only reinforce his point.  But, hey, we're old people. Well, he is.  I'm an old person in training--in spirit, certainly.

There are two categories of ads that catch my attention, especially: commercials for erectile dysfunction treatments, and commercials for engagement rings.

We don't react to the ED ads. We openly discuss our aging bodies. No discomfort there.

The engagement ring commercials, on the other hand...

When those ones come on, it's crickets.  Silence.  Because, at this stage, I want to get married and my partner doesn't. He's been married before and the experience soured him on the entire institution.

I'm not a romantic. Strangely, the reasons I have for wanting to marry him are remarkably institutional. He is older than I am. At some point, I will likely be faced with legal decisions, healthcare, financial affairs--I'll be taking care of business, and I want the legal standing to do so easily. 

I've got my reasons for wanting to get married, and they're good ones. They're not romantic, but I'm not romantic. Maybe if I were, I'd be married by now. :/

What is this? Where am I? What's it all about?

All good questions. Let me explain. My name is Giselle and I'm your new best friend. Well, maybe not "best friend." A best friend usually listens in addition to talking, but that's not me. What I will do is be here every day, starting June 1 2019, to share with you whichever song pops into my head. Why?  What's the point? Well, here's the thing: I'm a writer. It's a pretty lonely job. Over the years, I've become increasingly socially isolated and you know what? It sucks. It sucks bad. The truth of the matter is that a lot of us are socially isolated, these days. #SongoftheDay I Dreamt We Spoke Again (Death Cab for Cutie)

Last winter, I listened to this Death Cab for Cutie album ( Thank You for Today ) on repeat. I'd probably heard it 20 or 30 times before I clued in to the fact that it was a break-up album, and maybe I was listening to it so much because, last fall, I went through a break-up and never really dealt with it. If you've known me for a while, you've heard me talk about my girlfriend, Sweet. What you don't know is that she isn't my girlfriend anymore. We broke up while my grandmother was dying, which is a stupid time to break up with someone, but the relationship had run its course, we were in very different places emotionally, and it was time to say goodbye. I'm in pain and seeking out the coziest of cozies. Hetty Wainthropp is way up there. I'm in bed with BritBox, hoping I'll come across an episode I missed on TV, but I'm pretty sure I've seen them all. Rewatching the later ones anyway. No reason not to. I was such a fan of Keeping Up Appearances, and Hetty Wainthropp felt like an odd continuation of that show--like, if Hyacinth were actually nice to Richard, and they took in a stray teenager and opened a detective agency?  It's basically the same show, if you look at it that way. I was singing "Stacy's Mom" as a method of self-soothing (hey, it works) when I started to wonder: did the band Fountains of Wayne name themselves after Wayne Fontana? Turns out the answer is no. They named themselves after a garden centre. But did the garden centre name themselves after Wayne Fontana? Probably not. Another somewhat relevant question would be: how can I, as a fully-fledged queer person, embrace such a heterocentric tune? Well, I grew up with it. And, anyway, this song is from the 60s. YouTube now seems to be working overtime to prove to me that music videos existed in the 70s.  Okay, I admit it: I was wrong when I said music videos were invented in the 80s. Clearly they existed in the disco era. This Boney M video was made in 1976, from what I gather. I'll give them this: they found a location they liked and they stuck with it. #SongoftheDay Wake Up in the Morning Rice Krispies Jingle (The Rolling Stones)

So apparently The Rolling Stones wrote this Rice Krispies jingle? I came across it when I was looking for that commercial from maybe the 80s or 90s where the dad makes Rice Krispie squares and it's so easy, but he dusts flour all over himself to make it look like it was an overwhelming experience. Remember that? Nobody else seems to, and I couldn't find it on Youtube. Maybe I made it up.  Anyway, I had leftover marshmallows from our cottage trip, so I made a batch of Rice Krispie squares today. I was hoping they'd turn out big and burly and HARD, but instead they're soft and gooey and chewy. I'll still probably eat the whole tray, which is a little worrying since they contain 40 marshmallows. That's a lot of marshmallows to eat in one day. #SongoftheDay You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby (Edna Mae Harris)

My chronic illness was sparked by the onset of menopause (thank you very much, hormonal changes) and yet my mother is constantly saying to me: "I don't understand why you're so sick all the time. You were such a healthy baby." Yeah, you'd think that would have carried me all the way through life. Weird. I was listening to a Paralympian talking about proving to the world how much we (people with disabilities) can do. Because I became disabled in adulthood (well, midlife), I find it's the opposite with me: I feel like I have to somehow prove that I can no longer do things I could very easily do earlier in life. And I hate that feeling. And, realistically, it's not "the world" I need to prove this to. It's certainly not my doctors--they have been wonderfully supportive. There have been lots of baby birds (okay, child birds) in the backyard lately. One of the bird babies is a grackle, for which I have an odd affection, and every time I see it, I sing "Grackle Baby" to the tune of this song. I'm pretty sure that's not annoying, but you'd have to ask my partner.
