#SongoftheDay Wishin' and Hopin' (Dionne Warwick)

 I enrolled in a free mindfulness course online, and one of the first exercises they ask you to do is take an everyday task like brushing your teeth and do it mindfully. I chose something else--I chose to be mindful every time I vacuum. 

I picked vacuuming because I actually do that more often than I brush my teeth (life with cats) and I frequently have emotional breakdowns while I do it.  When I vacuum, I think. Too much.  Way too much. I imagine scenarios I can't cope with. I end up screaming and crying because of things that haven't happened and probably never will.  

To keep my thoughts in check, I decided to be in the moment with my vacuuming: notice the sound and sensation of the machine, watch what it's picking up, seek out all those little bits of kitty litter.

It hasn't gone as smoothly as I'd hoped.  My brain still takes over.  I think. I panic. I cry.

So I've started singing while I vacuum.  That seems to be the only way to keep myself from ruminating and making up all sorts of anxiety-producing fantasies in my mind. 

Today, I started singing this song.  I don't know why. It came out of nowhere. Even as a child, this was a song that made me go "hmmm... really?" I'll definitely overanalyze why I'm singing it at this time of life--maybe that's what I can think about next time I vacuum.

I've got Covid

Hi Friends, Turns out the reason I've been so sick is that I have Covid. I tested negative two days ago, but this morning the test came back positive. I'm in a lot of pain--especially my throat and my head, at the moment--and the pain in my eyes is making it very hard to look at this screen.  So I'm going to take some time off, here, while I recover. When I can comfortably look at my screen and I have the energy to return, you know I'll be back. A lot has changed since I first created this blog. Even more changes happened while the blog was on hiatus. Most notably, my partner was diagnosed with cancer. He is currently receiving treatments, the side effects of which make every day incredibly arduous. When you become a caregiver, everybody tells you that you have to take care of yourself first--the whole oxygen mask thing. Even my partner tells me I need to take care of myself first, particularly because I have chronic health conditions that make it almost impossible to function some days. It feels kind of ridiculous sometimes, the two of us trying to take care of each other when we're both sick. We need so much help, and right now we have nothing. All we've got is each other. Every time someone tells me to take care of myself first, I wonder how I'm supposed to do that when my partner's needs are so immediate and life-or-death. He is not a demanding person. Whether you were a child in the 90s or an adult who just happened to enjoy a quality animated series, you probably loved Pinky and the Brain as much as I did. Cartoons really spoke to me, when I was a kid. My household was plagued by domestic violence, and I swear there were times when cartoons saved me.  I had Strawberry Shortcake bedsheets and a Smurfs blanket, and when the world was crashing down outside my door (literally--there was a lot of crashing in my house), I would burrow under the covers and pretend I was in Cartoon World with all my favourite characters.  Happy New Year's Eve! As we bid farewell to this blazing trash heap of a year, let's go out dancing. I was really lucky to have a lot of gay friends, as a queer teenager in the 90s. I do still own this CD. I bought it when it first came out (in 1999? Wow...) and I remember being so proud of it. When I had my best friend over for dinner at my first apartment, I played this album and she was like, "Ugh, turn it off! I HATE baroque music!" heh It came to mind the other week when I was isolating my diseased self at my apartment and my partner was three hours away at his house. He wrote me an email one evening to tell me the classical radio station we listen to had just played Karina Gauvin singing Where'er You Walk, and it brought him to tears. I mentioned the other day that there were more sad posts to come.  Well, here we go. One of my cats has been very sick and I had to have him put down the other day.   Can't get much sadder than that. My partner drove me to the vet's office. As soon as we got in the car, this song came on the radio. And it wasn't the start of the song.
