Since we had Dolly Parton on yesterday, I figured I'd showcase my favourite song of hers today. Of course I love her performance, but I think I might even like Jack White's cover better. Is that a firing offence? It's just so tortured.

Auto-tweet appears to be busted again. The other day, I was so depressed I slept all morning and spent the entire afternoon watching astrological tarot readings on YouTube. One of the tarot readers said something directed primarily at those of us experiencing depression: she said it's useful to wake up every morning and remind yourself that it's a new day. Today doesn't have to be like yesterday. At the time, it sounded overly simplistic, but this morning I woke up with this song in my head and everything clicked into place. I was like oh... she was right... I don't have to believe I'm a useless human just because I believed that yesterday. I can get out of bed, I can get some work done, and I can feel good about myself. Last week, I wrote you a post about spending 7+ hours at the hospital with my partner. Just a day in the life of Giselle. When we got home from the hospital, I wanted to crash. I was exhausted beyond exhaustion, but I had to make dinner. My partner's doctors keep emphasizing to us how important it is for him to keep eating, even though it hurts, even though he can't stand the sight of food sometimes. They want him to keep eating in order to keep his swallowing muscles in working order, and in order to keep his weight up. The oncological dietitian we met with explained how important it is to pack every bite with protein and fats. He's supposed to eat dairy with the highest fat content we can find. Put butter and gravy on everything. If in doubt, add ice cream. Sounds like a dream, except that my partner can no longer taste anything. Plus, it hurts. Every time this song comes on the radio, I say to my partner, "This was the theme for Fashion Television, remember?"  He doesn't remember because he didn't spend the entire 80s watching CityTV (aside from Baby Blues, of course).  I never watched Fashion Television, myself (I am the least fashionable person you will ever meet), but it came on after something I did watch (I don't remember what), so I will always equate this song with that show. The other day, the DJ on my 70s/80s/90s radio station introduced this track by saying, "Taking you back to Fashion Television..." and I turned to my partner like: See? See? It's not just me! I didn't post the music video because the sound quality didn't seem amazing, but the video is honestly like the 80s threw up on itself. That decade, man--I'm still recovering from it. I met my best friend when we were in high school. After 25 years of friendship, I pretty much know what to expect from her.  I know that she'll retreat when she needs help the most.  She lives with a lot of serious illnesses and spends a lot of time in the hospital.  I've come to understand that, if she's sick, I won't hear from her. I'll ask how she's doing, but she won't answer until she's home again. I worry about her a lot, because she's often so ill doctors don't think she'll make it.  She is one of the most determined people I know. Just staying alive is a major challenge for her, but she does it. It's been twenty years since we've lived in the same city, so we don't get to spend much time together. My partner has been asked to speak at the memorial service for a lifelong friend who died last month. They'd known each other since they were babies. He is currently working on what he'd like to say, and he's listening to Paul Simon. The last time I walked into the kitchen, this was playing and my partner said, "I love this song." I'll be honest with you: I didn't know Badfinger was a band until I googled musicians from Wales. I was familiar with this song, but I never knew who it was by. I've been in horrible pain all day (pardon any typos--thinking and typing are super difficult right now) and I just remembered a rant that's been inside me since last year. So buckle up, I guess. My partner and I listen to a classical radio station he refers to as "the old people channel" because it's very much geared toward older people. They regularly play radio spots from the head of a seniors' organization. Last year the head of this organization did a radio spot condemning the media for its "negative portrayal" of older people by showing them using "walkers and canes." I hear a record scratch in my head, which probably shows my age. But I'm actually not a senior. I'm in my forties.  I use both a walker AND a cane (not at the same time). Remember when this song was made into a Cheez Whiz (sp?) commercial? Would have been in the late 80s or early 90s. That commercial (and thus this song) popped into my head this morning as I was reading an old story of mine. I thought to myself, "Wow, this story has personality!"  And I burst into song. My partner used to love Cheez Whiz before his cancer treatment. Radiation changed the way he tastes things, meaning most things taste like nothing. When he was undergoing radiation he had to eat mostly creamy foods because hard foods are too difficult to consume when your throat is full of radiation burns. Having to eat creamy stuff all the time really put him off that particular texture, and now that things like Cheeze Whiz and peanut butter, which he used to eat every day, taste like nothing and have an unappealing texture, he just avoids them. This song popped into my head just now. Not sure why. Not even sure why I remember it so well. Before today, I'd only ever heard it once, when I watched the movie Silk Stockings on TV as a teenager. It felt like a classic, to me, but I'm not actually sure if too many people have seen it. And, in fact, this song is the only thing I remember about the movie.
