#SongoftheDay Jolene (The White Stripes)

Image
Since we had Dolly Parton on yesterday, I figured I'd showcase my favourite song of hers today. Of course I love her performance, but I think I might even like Jack White's cover better. Is that a firing offence? It's just so tortured. Actually, I'm pretty sure this cover is what inspired my MMF incubus-incubus-succubus menage erotic romance story, JOLENE . #SongoftheDay 9 to 5 (Dolly Parton)

Image
I haven't worked a 9 to 5 job since January 2006, so it hasn't exactly been a rough transition to working from home. I worked from home to begin with. With an increased demand for digital content, I'm actually working harder now than I was two months ago. I'm lucky in that I only have my partner to distract me. (and if I tell him not to talk to me because I'm writing, he's pretty good at obeying that rule.) My cousin, who is a very businessy businessperson, must be going nuts. Her workplace tried to transition her to working a few days from home last year, but it only took her a week and a half to realize working from home wasn't for her. Anyone trying to concentrate while their kids are constantly bursting into the room have my infinite praise. Continuing with artists I found through collaborations with Snotty Nose Rez Kids, we have a hip hop sister duo from Calgary. Catchy little ditty, no? I've been singing it to my partner for days, which is kind of funny considering he's retired and I'm working harder than ever. He still seems more the 9-5 type. #SongoftheDay Good Morning babe (Kimmortal)

Image
Yesterday we listened to Snotty Nose Rez Kids and I mentioned their album Trapline is full of collaborations. One of their tracks features Kimmortal, a musician I wasn't familiar with. So I looked them up, and it turns out they're a queer Vancouver-based artist. This track of theirs spoke to me particularly, because it reminded me of a very specific moment: waking up next to my partner and looking at his face and feeling overwhelmingly fortunate and grateful to have him next to me in bed. A lot of people can't be with the ones they love right now--for a lot of reasons. We just found out a member of my partner's extended family has died. He had cancer. My partner is always unsettled by deaths in the family.  I mean, who isn't?  That sounds stupid. Of course he's unsettled by deaths. But, because he's older, every time someone of his generation dies, he is convinced he's the next to go. So when I listen to this track, I imagine waking up next to m

There are so many bands and artists whose names cross my radar again and again and again and again, and I keep thinking, "Gee, I really ought to check out their music one of these days." Well, Snotty Nose Rez Kids is one of those groups and today is one of those days. I finally dove into their music and now I know why I keep hearing about them. The first album I listened to is their most recent-- Trapline --which has lots of great collaborations and a notably different feel to the self-titled album this track comes from. I strongly encourage you to explore their discography, if it's unfamiliar to you. Let's start with a song that puts a smile on my face, and hopefully on yours. #SongoftheDay In the Still of the Night (The Five Satins)

I have practically no attention span, which is why I don't watch a lot of movies--they're too long. I can't concentrate on one story for more than an hour (or two... or three... or The Irishman). But the other day, my partner and I were so zonked we spent the entire afternoon staring at the TV. Dirty Dancing is one of the movies we watched--a film I've seen once as an adult and 387 times as a youth.  The soundtrack fills me with nostalgia. Here's one of the (many) songs that reminds me of sleepovers with my cousins, or school friends, because we watched Dirty Dancing over and over on VHS. #SongoftheDay The Gambler (Kenny Rogers)

Image
You've probably heard by now that Kenny Rogers died a few days ago. I haven't listened to this song since the 80s, but I listened to this song A LOT in the 80s.  It was one of my dad's favourites. I remember asking him lots of questions about it. "You never count your money when you're sitting at the table." I remember asking about that line. I don't remember my father's answer. Funny how a song like this has a much different meaning when you're middle-aged and dealing with existential angst. I suspect a number of us are asking ourselves the big questions right now. Although I do adore the original Talking Heads version of this song, I'll let Kermie do the heavy lifting today. #SongoftheDay Alison (Elvis Costello)

Image
Alison Tyler is a writer and editor I've worked with many times throughout my 14 years in this business. She's a kind and generous person. I have all sorts of odds and ends she's sent me in the mail, from fortune-telling fish to handmaid crocheted headwarmers. She's been going through a rough time, recently. Her husband had two strokes in December, I believe, and she's been documenting her experiences on Patreon . I haven't read her posts, mostly because my mother was in the hospital during a stretch of that time, and sometimes it's hard to handle another person's emotion in addition to your own. (After losing their son, my aunt and uncle tried group grief counselling, but they said it was too hard for them--they left feeling worse rather than better, because they were absorbing everyone else's sadness.) I follow Alison on twitter, so I've been getting a slight glimpse at what's going on. She's on my mind particularly today, as I w

#SongoftheDay Personal Jesus (Depeche Mode)

Image
I'm coming at this song from so many different angles. Last week, I was thinking about one of my best friends from high school and considering how weird it was that she spent her time with a dorky CBC listener like me. She was Goth. She had straggly black hair, wore black lipstick, and listened to Marilyn Manson. Then I thought how odd it was that, a quarter of a century later, I've still never (to the best of my knowledge) heard anything by Marilyn Manson. When I set myself to the task, the first song that came up was this one--a Depeche Mode cover. So I listened to it. And then I listened to the original version. And then I had this song stuck in my head for days--not that I'm complaining. The other night I was procrastinating on twitter, when I saw the following tweet: Yeah, I have a lot of @depechemode shirts. But Violator is my fave. Can’t believe my fave album turns 30 today! pic.twitter.com/gGA4s4SKdg — Diane “SOCIAL DISTANCE” Ademu-John (@junkyardm

#SongoftheDay Everybody Loves Somebody (Dean Martin)

Image
When I opened my latest credit card bill, this song popped into my head. Sometime in the 80s or 90s, it was altered to accompany a commercial for credit cards or insurance or travellers' cheques or something. I'm not looking this up, as you can tell. Anyway, the words were changed to something like: "Everybody needs some money sometimes. Everybody needs some cash somehow." This month's credit card bill was a whopper. It covers the period when my mom was in the hospital. I bought a lot of stuff for her in that time, and even just transit costs and stuff like that really add up. Everybody needs some money sometimes. My sometime is now. So if you've been thinking about buying my books, please do. I'd really appreciate it. And if you don't have cash to spend, you can still do me a world of good by logging on to your local library's online service and searching my name (Giselle Renarde, in case you don't know who you're talking to). #SongoftheDay Fairest Lord Jesus (Truro Cathedral)

Image
I've mentioned before that my partner and I are not religious people , but that he was raised in a very religious household. The other day, he was going through letters he'd held on to because they meant something to him. One was from his mother, who died more than a decade ago. In this letter, she wrote to him about a time he almost died as an infant. He had a very serious medical condition that required surgery the day after it was discovered. If he hadn't received the above-and-beyond medical treatment he did from his GP, he probably would have died as a baby. His mother outlines how his doctor had given orders to the hospital for treatment overnight. In the middle of the night, she (the doctor) woke up, went to the hospital, and asked staff if her orders had been followed. They had not. She instructed hospital staff again to get on it, but they were hesitant (to take orders from a female doctor, perhaps?...just conjecture on my part...). It took a whole lot of pushi

#SongoftheDay Pussywillows, Cat-Tails (Gordon Lightfoot)

Image
Sunday, I brought my mother the soup and casserole I'd made for her.  We went for a walk together, which was lovely, and gave me the impression that she truly is on the mend after surgery. (Her friends have been saying to her, "So this means you don't have cancer anymore, right?" Sadly, this is not at all the case. She's still got cancer, just fewer internal organs...) When I got home, I found my partner listening to Gordon Lightfoot. This song came on and I got lost in nostalgia, because we used to sing it in grade school--in music class. It certainly suited the maudlin scene I walked into: my partner sitting in a chair, reading a book, with only one light on in the entire apartment, listening to this blast from the past. Is this a song about the arrival of spring, or is it a song about the ache of nostalgia?  Of remembering those soft winds and roses? It certainly fills me with nostalgia, but I'm just one person. If you're wondering how you can

#SongoftheDay A Little Bit Country-A Little Bit Rock 'N Roll (Donny & Marie Osmond)

Image
I haven't mention how my mom's doing.  Guess I should. Her surgeon figured she'd need 6 days in hospital following her surgery. She ended up spending two weeks there. She's recovering at home now. She's nowhere near out of the woods. I mean, she still has cancer. She's not cured. The surgery was kind of a stop-gap measure. Plus, the surgery itself caused other problems she's dealing with now. My brother lives with her, so he's taking care of the day-to-day stuff.  I just made some soup I'll take to her. Her sisters and her friends have been great about bringing her food and getting her out, now that she's able to walk around a bit. I picked this song because my mom liked Donny & Marie when she was a teenager.  A few years ago,  when they gave a concert in town, one of my sisters and I bought her tickets. We encouraged her to take a friend, since neither of us wanted to sit through the show. If you're wondering how you can sup

#SongoftheDay But Not For Me (Sarah Vaughan)

Image
When I was out for a walk the other day, a neighbour down the street was getting rid of a bunch of old cassette tapes. This is dangerous. I'm trying not to bring home too much stuff, especially since my partner's in the process of trying to get rid of stuff, but when I spotted a Sarah Vaughan Sings Gershwin, I had to have it. So it came home with me. And when my partner saw it in my hand, he said, "Oh, Sarah Vaughan!" It was a welcome addition to the household. This isn't the version that's on my tape, but I couldn't find the exact version on youtube. So we'll listen to this one. #SongoftheDay Violet (Hole)

I'm currently reading the book Little Fish by Casey Plett , and it is phenomenal. It's one of those books that is clearly written for other trans women. It doesn't explain itself. It doesn't need to. If you get it, good. If you don't, oh well.  Books that "explain" trans-ness are so boring. I should know--I've written like 40 of them. heh. At one point, the main character (Wendy) is standing in the cold, waiting for a taxi, and listening to this song over and over. I must admit, I'm not a Hole aficionado, so I had to look it up. #SongoftheDay On The Sunny Side Of The Street (Esperanza Spalding)

Image
Today is one of those first sunny, warm, spring-like days of late winter. Everyone is out for a walk. Our neighbour's grandkids are racing up and down the stairs to the apartment above us. The birds are singing up a storm. The young man behind us is tuning up his motorcycle. I just got back from buying milk. The first thing I noticed about the main street, here, is that there's a sunny side and a shady side. The shady side is cold. The sunny side is warm. So I walked on the sunny side, and I came home singing this song. As I stepped inside, my partner said, "You're cheerful!" And it's true. I am. #SongoftheDay Tiptoe Through the Tulips (Tiny Tim)

Yesterday I was thinking about music used and abused by TV commercials, and today I'm still thinking about that. This tune is used in the background of an ad I used to see on Youtube a lot (for an airline or travel service--I don't remember) and it's there to represent conformity. I'd tense up every time that ad came on, because in what way does Tiny Tim represent conformity? As I mentioned yesterday, my partner's been watching a lot of curling on TV.  Yes, we lead a very exciting life. We keep seeing a commercial for like... I don't know... a car or something? The commercial features a soft, sweet acoustic version of this track, except instead of "Blow a kiss / Fire a gun," they sing "Blow a kiss into the sun" I think?  Something soft and sweet to make you want to buy a car. #SongoftheDay Strauss's Fruhling (Jessye Norman)

We've been listening to a lot of Jessye Norman on the blog, lately, because I've been listening to a classical music station a lot, lately, and they've been playing a lot of her work, lately.  Posthumously. Her voice was truly gorgeous. And still is. I've been doing mindfulness meditations and every day you're supposed to think of 3 things you're grateful for. It does make me consider different realms of gratitude. Like feeling fortunate that we have recordings of beautiful voices like Jessye Norman's, so we can still hear her sing even after she's gone. #SongoftheDay Bathwater (No Doubt)

Image
I was obsessed with this song, when it came out 20 years ago. At the time, I was in love with a married man, we were deeply involved in an affair, and I was perfectly comfortable with the situation. I liked being "the other woman"--read all about it in my book AUDREY AND LAWRENCE . It's fiction, but it's pretty damn close to the truth. "Why do the good girls always want the bad boys?" It wasn't until I hit my midlife crisis that I was like, "Hey, you know what? I'm ready for a monogamous relationship!" Up to that point, I'd been happy with affairs and open relationships. In fact, up to that point, I'd never been able to picture myself in a monogamous relationship--and with a man, of all people! I have very positive feelings about open relationships (and I'm not even against affairs, even though I'd be pretty gutted if my partner cheated on me--but that's mostly because I believe in honesty above all and I'd fee

#SongoftheDay Have I the Right (The Honeycombs)

Image
The other day, I walked my partner to an appointment. As I kissed him goodbye, this song popped into my head. I listened to it as a child, because it was played on the Oldies station we listened to at home, but I never knew what it was called until I looked it up just now. I guess I hadn't taken in all the lines that begin, "Have I the right?" Interesting that someone was asking that question in 1964. A lot of people aren't asking that question today. #SongoftheDay What Do I Get? (Buzzcocks)

Image
When we listened to Patience and Prudence a couple weeks back, I mentioned that I'd first heard their song in the film Ghost World . Same goes for this one. My partner and I watched Ghost World on Friday. It's one of my favourite films. He wasn't so impressed. He found it "teen angsty, but also very sad." Which is not at all how I would characterize it. He didn't like Thora Birch's Enid character, because she's an asshole.  That's precisely why I do like her. She fucks up everybody's life, including her own, and then walks away. It's not like I want to emulate this character or anything. I just have great affection for her.  She struggles so hard against herself and hurts everyone around her in the process. If you've never seen this movie, I highly recommend it. I almost never use my Spotify account. The only two groups I've listened to with it are rook&nomie and Black Dresses. So that's what Spotify's algorithms had to work with when they put together a playlist they thought I'd like. It was mostly rook&nomie and Black Dresses (big surprise), but this song was on there, too. I ended up listening to the entire album five times back to back, so... good call, Spotify? After seeing a photo of Backxwash on Black Dresses' Twitter feed , I immediately started listening to her stuff . When I came across this track, I started crying pretty much right away. Earlier in the day, my mom had expressed surprise that I STILL haven't shaved my body hair even though I've been living with an actual MAN for months now--as if the person I'm partnered with necessarily determines my gender identity and presentation.
