This song reminds me of high school, though I'm not sure why. Possibly because I was big into New Age stuff back then. I've mentioned before that I had a palmistry poster hanging on my bedroom wall.

Just yesterday I was cleaning out my closet and I found the journal where I wrote down all my tarot readings, as a teen. Many of the questions were like "How am I going to do on my math test?"

Was I a nerd or what?

Everything New Age appealed to me back then, and this song appealed to me as well. The funny thing about middle age, or midlife crisis, or whatever phase of existence I find myself in, is that the things that spoke to me as a teen have come back to the fore. I've started doing tarot readings again. I listen to astrological forecasts more often than weather forecasts. And I do quite like this song.

I first heard this song, but not this version, in the 1990s.  If you were watching TV back then, you'd have been familiar with Ally McBeal. My aunt had the soundtrack from the show, and I listened to it obsessively while housesitting for her one summer. This weekend, I took a much-needed day off from hospital duty to go to the symphony. I've never seen the place so packed, but it was no surprise, with a double-bill like Rachmaninoff's 2nd piano concerto and Scheherazade. Elim Chan did a powerhouse job. I couldn't believe my luck when I found this video of her conducting Scheherazade on YouTube. Witness the journey! This concert was an experience, I tell you. The tickets were my belated Christmas gift to my parter (and also his Valentine's Day gift, because I haven't been terribly organized lately...) and he went on and on about how much he enjoyed the performance. I needed new pyjamas, so, naturally, I went to the supermarket. They sell clothes for cheap. I am nothing if not cheap. Whenever people buy me pyjamas (and by "people" I mean my mother, because she is the only person who buys me pyjamas), they buy me flannel pyjamas. As a permimenopausal person, let me tell you, flannel does not work. Even when I sleep naked, I wake up drenched in sweat. So I needed to find something I could sleep in that wasn't hot, and what I found (at the supermarket) were these adorable soft fluttery little shorts. And they were made of a printed fabric. Every time the commercial comes on, he notes that it's remarkably well-done, but since when do people grab their butts and sing about diarrhea onscreen? 1989, I guess? A grocery flyer came through my mail slot today. Across the top, it said: BACK TO ROUTINE. As soon as I read that, this song jumped into my head. I've been listening to it ever since. Over the holidays, visitors to this site dropped drastically. It worried me, I must admit. But the moment this BACK TO ROUTINE grocery flyer entered my apartment, visitors magically returned to the blog. What a relief. It's easy to get addicted to the news, these days. The world is a 24/7 train wreck. How can we look away? My mother's basically been self-isolating since January. Well, not really, but she had her surgery, she was in hospital for weeks, then when she got out she couldn't leave the house, and by the time she'd recovered enough to be out and about, she wasn't allowed to.  Her immune system is severely compromised. She is very much at risk. Thank goodness my brother lives with her.  She also has lots of friends and sisters who are more than willing to drop groceries at her door. I didn't mean to write so much about my mom.  I only mentioned her to say that she tells me she often turns on the news first thing in the morning, and suddenly it's afternoon.  All she's done in that time is watch the news. After days of not being able to leave the house due to migraines AND salmonella poisoning (what a combination...) I finally went out to buy a few groceries. I often use a walker to get around, and that was the case today.  On my way home, there was a snooty rich lady standing in the sidewalk so that I couldn't get by. I asked her if she could move and she didn't even look at me, just took the slightest half-step forward so she was still blocking my path. There was no way I could get by her with my walker. She also had a dog. Her dog was completely blocking my path. I asked her if she could move her dog and she didn't even acknowledge my existence. She did not move her dog.  It's always bothered me, being treated this way--being treated like I'm so inconsequential that I'm not even worth acknowledging--but I think it bothers me in a much deeper way when I'm using a mobility aid.
