I dropped a peanut on the floor and ate it anyway, and would you believe it was rotten? I think it tried to tell me so by jumping out of my mouth and onto the floor in the first place, but I didn't listen.

The version of this song I learned, growing up, was "last night" instead of "just now" and "just now" feels so jarring, wow.

I will always associate this piece with the film Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, which was one of my favourite movies of the 80s. It came out at the absolute perfect time, for me. I'm sure I've mentioned in the past that I wanted to be an animator when I was young. Part of that was because I loved drawing, and part of that was because I loved cartoons. I was watching a murder mystery the other day, and the detective found a clue in the victim's journal: it was an ancient sepia photograph of the woman when she was a child. The photograph was dated... 1984. 1984? Okay, speaking as someone who was also a child in 1984, I can tell you that none of my childhood photos are sepia-toned! I do have quite a few black-and-white pictures of my sister and myself, but that's just because my father was kind of artsy with his camera and he would sometimes buy black-and-white film. But the vast majority of photos taken in 1984 were in full colour. Definitely not sepia! I wondered how old the prop person on that TV show was, and if they thought photography in 1984 was basically the same as photography in 1884. This is a cover of a Bowie song, by the way. What is this? Where am I? What's it all about?

All good questions. Let me explain. My name is Giselle and I'm your new best friend. Well, maybe not "best friend." A best friend usually listens in addition to talking, but that's not me. What I will do is be here every day, starting June 1 2019, to share with you whichever song pops into my head. Why?  What's the point? Well, here's the thing: I'm a writer. It's a pretty lonely job. Over the years, I've become increasingly socially isolated and you know what? It sucks. It sucks bad. The truth of the matter is that a lot of us are socially isolated, these days. I know this is a terrible thing to say, but I think my brother-in-law might be the most boring person in the world. Every time he talks, I feel my soul leaving my body. I keep wondering why nobody shuts him up, but I guess I don't shut him up either, so who am I to talk? As I mentioned yesterday, we had a little Christmas gathering with my partner's family. It was just a few of us: my partner and I, his sister, his brother, and his brother's wife. I am the new recruit. I haven't been around this family long enough to have a proper place in it. I love my partner's sister. I like his sister-in-law. But his brother, oh man, every time he starts into another one of his diatribes about fixing a billing error that was off by fewer than five cents, I wish someone would hit him over the head with something heavy.  He doesn't do anything, so he's got nothing to talk about, but he talks about nothing non-stop. I have a sister who is in her thirties. We don't spend much time together, in part because of the age difference (we're always at vastly disparate life stages) and in part because we live in different cities/towns, but we were out together a couple weeks ago and a teenage boy called me ma'am. My sister burst out laughing. I didn't get the joke. She was like "Ma'am!" That was the joke, I guess. If she spent more time with me, she would know just how often I get called ma'am. I don't even hear it anymore. And if she just waits a few more years, it's very likely that teenagers will start calling her ma'am, too. (I'll wait a little while to warn her that eventually people who are OLDER than you start calling you ma'am as well...) This song was playing in the pharmacy when I was waiting to pick up some new prescriptions. Made me so happy, because I hadn't heard it in decades. I started singing along (sorry, fellow pharmacy waiting people) because a wave of nostalgia hit me so hard.  I don't have any specific memories attached to this song, but nostalgia always hits me harder when I haven't heard a song since I was a kid. #SongoftheDay Easy To Be Hard from Hair (Cheryl Barnes)

Today, as I was leaving my building, one of my neighbours was a total asshole to me. This song has been in my head ever since.  I can be rude and mean to people, but not out of the blue. It's usually because they've done something rude or mean to me. I actually care deeply about everyone I come across, and I guess that's why it hurts me so much when people lack compassion or can't see their way to showing kindness to others.  I grew up in a neighbourhood that's known for drugs and gang violence, and people showed each other more respect there than they do in the ritzy rich-people area I live in now (not because I'm ritzy or rich--because I got lucky when the rental market was in the toilet 15+ years ago).  The moral of the story is that I'd like to be able to leave my house without getting all riled up by jerks, but I don't see that happening any time soon. #SongoftheDay I Sing the Body Electric (62nd Annual Grammy Awards Finale)

I actually can't stand this song, even though I loved Fame (the movie AND the TV show) back in the 80s. I attended a very Fame-like high school as a teenager, and we sang this as a choral number one year. I love singing, and I usually enjoyed any song we sang just because of the community feeling you get when you're singing with a hundred other people, but this number didn't do it for me. I still hate it. But I chose it as our song of the day because last week I published the 21st installment in my "Sexy Surprises" series of 6-story erotic anthologies. This book is called " Good Vibes, Sexy Surprises " and all the stories feature vibrators. And that made me think of this song. So there's your connection.
