#SongoftheDay Crazy (Daisy Dee)

I usually fall asleep listening to Rifftrax or old MST3k movies. For the past month, my cinematic masterpiece of choice has been Cool as Ice, a 1991 film starring Vanilla Ice. One day, when I was very sick, I listened to Cool as Ice at least 5 times in a row. I tried to actually watch it once (with my eyes, I mean), and the cinematography made me nauseuous. So I just listen.

It's a weird obsession. VERY weird.

So, this song is from the soundtrack. There's a lot of music in the movie, and it's not all bad. A lot of it piques my nostalgia.

By the way... this video. It reminds me of those lip synch music videos people used to make at Canada's Wonderland. I can't decide whether I love it or... not.

I have been incredibly ill. Emergency room, IV fluids, diagnostic equipment, more meds.  I'm so sorry for taking off without letting you know what was going on, but there are times when it can't be helped. My partner and I watched Back to the Future recently. He'd never seen it before. We got a DVD box set out from the library and I said to him, "Oh, this set has all three movies in it." He came home from the library the day after we'd watched the first one and told me, "I was about to return this when I realized all three movies are in here." I was so proud of myself for not saying, "Yeah, I told you that! Don't you ever listen to me?" heh. Life goes more smoothly when I don't lash out about things that really do not matter. #SongoftheDay Riptide (Vance Joy)

 Last week, my partner was talking about the movie Midnight Cowboy , which I'd never seen. I laughed because I've been watching Futurama on DVD lately, and the film is spoofed briefly in one episode. I never got the reference until my partner described Midnight Cowboy to me. Ever since, I've had this song--Riptide--in my head, just floating around back there, not demanding terribly much attention.  This morning, I recited some of the lyrics to my partner and said, "Do you think he's talking about Midnight Cowboy ?" My partner had, unsurprisingly, never heard Riptide. I honestly don't know where he's been for the past 40 years, because he doesn't seem to be familiar with any music that was created after 1979. Anyway, I played my partner the lyric video (he was particularly amused by the line "I want to be your left hand man"), and when it mentioned the "movie that I think you'd like," he said that did sound like Midnight Cow

When I was a kid, I thought I wrote this song. Turns out I did not. But neither did the composers of the musical Kismet, from which this song comes. The tune was written by Alexander Borodin. I got to find out what you do if you can't lift your head off the pillow but you have to get out of the house because someone has an appointment to check out your boyfriend's home that's for sale. We had decided to go to the community centre so my partner could work out at the gym there and I could work in the library. But my vertigo was bad. My health is just so bad, honestly, I can barely function some days--and yesterday was one of those days. So when we got to the community centre I said to my partner, "I'm just going to lie down in the car." My partner said, "You can't stay in the car! Children die that way!" I assured him that I wasn't a child. He tried to give me his keys so I could at least open a window, but I didn't want him not to have his keys. I wouldn't take them. I'll be honest with you: I didn't know Badfinger was a band until I googled musicians from Wales. I was familiar with this song, but I never knew who it was by. #SongoftheDay I Wanna Be Sedated (The Ramones)

I didn't think I'd be able to bring you a song today, but that's been true of most days this week, and I've managed to deliver. My chronic illness is doing me in, and none of my prescription meds seem to be able to handle this attack. I spend my days and nights in pain and awake through it all. It's better when the pain knock me out, but nope. I'm awake with my pain. I'm aware of my pain. No matter which pills I take in which combination, the pain remains. My partner and I have plans we were really looking forward to in the coming days. All I can do is hope that the pain backs off, because my meds aren't up to snuff this week. (I can't believe this has never been our song of the day. I love this song and this video.) #SongoftheDay Brick House (Lionel Richie)

I love telling you tales of my own stupidity, so here's another one: I have heard this song many, many times in my life and until last night I always misheard the "shake it down" part. I always thought they were sinking "Chaka Khan, Chaka Khan now." And I often did think to myself, "Wow, The Commodores must have really liked Chaka Khan." In fact, I must have assumed the song was about Chaka Khan. But it wasn't something I gave my attention to. This was all just happening in the back of my brain. Well, my partner and I went to the Beaches Jazz Festival last night and we listened to the same funk bank I've heard sing this song ten time. Maybe more? But the band had a new vocalist this year, plus I was standing in the front row, so when she started singing "Shake it down," I was like ohhhhh... SHAKE IT DOWN. Not Chaka Khan. We've already listened to the original version of this song, so today we are listening to Lionel Richie'
