#SongoftheDay Tick Tock (Clean Bandit and Mabel ft. 24kGoldn)

I'm sitting alone in my partner's house, and I'm reminded why I don't usually sit alone in my partner's house. (I usually sit outside.)

The clock.

It's a sentimental item, for him. His parents received it as a wedding present, so it's old.

And it ticks. And it tocks.

When there's no one else in the house, it's all I hear: tick, tock, tick, tock.

Ticking the hours of my life away.

It is the most depressing noise. Not just depressing, but existentially depressing. It might as well be reminding me: you're going to die.

The other day, my partner told me that he would like to give the clock to his son. As a gift. He's just not sure about packing it and shipping it overseas. It might get damaged in the process.

I don't always want to see things go from this house, but the clock I can live without.

#SongoftheDay Wake Up in the Morning Rice Krispies Jingle (The Rolling Stones)

So apparently The Rolling Stones wrote this Rice Krispies jingle? I came across it when I was looking for that commercial from maybe the 80s or 90s where the dad makes Rice Krispie squares and it's so easy, but he dusts flour all over himself to make it look like it was an overwhelming experience. Remember that? Nobody else seems to, and I couldn't find it on Youtube. Maybe I made it up.  Anyway, I had leftover marshmallows from our cottage trip, so I made a batch of Rice Krispie squares today. I was hoping they'd turn out big and burly and HARD, but instead they're soft and gooey and chewy. I'll still probably eat the whole tray, which is a little worrying since they contain 40 marshmallows. That's a lot of marshmallows to eat in one day. #SongoftheDay White Wedding (Billy Idol)

 My Wedding Heat series was recently featured on the Radish Fiction app , drawing renewed interest in the stories.   If I'm remembering correctly, I started writing Wedding Heat in 2012, after attending a wedding at a fancy resort.  I didn't stay at the resort, of course.  I shared a motel room off-site with 4 other people. To be honest, I hate it when people have their wedding somewhere fancy and expect their much less affluent guests to pony up for expensive accommodations.   But I hate weddings, generally, so why did I even write this series? I wrote it because there are so many people at weddings (at least, there were before covid), and it's such a charged environment. #SongoftheDay I Dreamt We Spoke Again (Death Cab for Cutie)

Last winter, I listened to this Death Cab for Cutie album ( Thank You for Today ) on repeat. I'd probably heard it 20 or 30 times before I clued in to the fact that it was a break-up album, and maybe I was listening to it so much because, last fall, I went through a break-up and never really dealt with it. If you've known me for a while, you've heard me talk about my girlfriend, Sweet. What you don't know is that she isn't my girlfriend anymore. We broke up while my grandmother was dying, which is a stupid time to break up with someone, but the relationship had run its course, we were in very different places emotionally, and it was time to say goodbye. YouTube now seems to be working overtime to prove to me that music videos existed in the 70s.  Okay, I admit it: I was wrong when I said music videos were invented in the 80s. Clearly they existed in the disco era. This Boney M video was made in 1976, from what I gather. I'll give them this: they found a location they liked and they stuck with it. #SongoftheDay Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 (Rousseau)

I will always associate this piece with the film Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, which was one of my favourite movies of the 80s. It came out at the absolute perfect time, for me. I'm sure I've mentioned in the past that I wanted to be an animator when I was young. Part of that was because I loved drawing, and part of that was because I loved cartoons. Have I told you this story before? I can't remember. I've talked about it on Twitter, but I can't recall if I ever mentioned it here on the blog: when I was a kid, there was a lot of domestic violence in my household. I had a Smurfs blanket on my bed, and at night I would hide underneath it and pretend I was in Cartoon World, where I could play with the characters I loved from Saturday morning cartoons. When Roger Rabbit came out, it affirmed my escapist desires by presenting a world in which cartoons and humans coexisted. That's where I wanted to live. There have been lots of baby birds (okay, child birds) in the backyard lately. One of the bird babies is a grackle, for which I have an odd affection, and every time I see it, I sing "Grackle Baby" to the tune of this song. I'm in pain and seeking out the coziest of cozies. Hetty Wainthropp is way up there. I'm in bed with BritBox, hoping I'll come across an episode I missed on TV, but I'm pretty sure I've seen them all. Rewatching the later ones anyway. No reason not to. I was such a fan of Keeping Up Appearances, and Hetty Wainthropp felt like an odd continuation of that show--like, if Hyacinth were actually nice to Richard, and they took in a stray teenager and opened a detective agency?  It's basically the same show, if you look at it that way. #SongoftheDay The Game of Love (Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders)

I was singing "Stacy's Mom" as a method of self-soothing (hey, it works) when I started to wonder: did the band Fountains of Wayne name themselves after Wayne Fontana? Turns out the answer is no. They named themselves after a garden centre. But did the garden centre name themselves after Wayne Fontana? Probably not. Another somewhat relevant question would be: how can I, as a fully-fledged queer person, embrace such a heterocentric tune? Well, I grew up with it. And, anyway, this song is from the 60s.
