My partner put in an offer on a condo in his hometown. Housing prices there are way cheaper than we're used to, but it means you're living in... well, I won't say where, but it wouldn't be my first choice.

Anyway, a big part of the reason he wanted to move back to his hometown was so that he could spend more time with a friend he's known since they were babies. This friend is seriously ill.

Moments after my partner put in the purchase offer, he got an email from the friend's wife. The friend has stopped eating and taking vital medications. He is likely to die in the coming days.

 Last week, my partner was talking about the movie Midnight Cowboy , which I'd never seen. I laughed because I've been watching Futurama on DVD lately, and the film is spoofed briefly in one episode. I never got the reference until my partner described Midnight Cowboy to me. Ever since, I've had this song--Riptide--in my head, just floating around back there, not demanding terribly much attention.  This morning, I recited some of the lyrics to my partner and said, "Do you think he's talking about Midnight Cowboy ?" The other day, I mentioned my partner's cousin just died.  He's taking her death pretty hard, and telling me lots of stories about her life. To him, she was always a colourful character.  Their family was very religious and straight-laced, so the fact that she'd done LSD, for example, made her a bad girl in the extreme. My partner recounted to me hearing his cousin sing this song--Janis Joplin's "Mercedes Benz"--when the adults weren't around and feeling absolutely scandalized. My health has been terrible this week. Truly and genuinely terrible and awful. Every night, as I go to bed, I think to myself: I should be in a hospital right now. Why am I not in a hospital right now? The pills my doctor put me on had terrible side effects. I've felt like I was going to die for five days straight. I haven't died yet, and hopefully I won't. We'll see how this all plays out. My partner has this theory that life is irony. I never used to take care of my health. I never used to see a doctor when I was sick. Now I finally start being a responsible adult human, and the cures are going to kill me. Caregiving when you feel like you're about to drop dead is a lot of fun. #SongoftheDay Smokin' in the Boys Room (Brownsville Station)

Late this afternoon, I was lying in my bathtub, fully clothed, singing "Sleeping in the bathtub" to the tune of this song. On our way into the city this morning, my partner and I were sitting at a red light when a car rammed into us from behind. We are not dead. But I am on my third day of a migraine, and being smashed into really didn't help. My head hurts. A lot. When I got home (to my home--the home that's an apartment), the landscapers were busy at work outside my building. These landscapers are better than the old ones my property manager used to hire. The old ones used to run 6 leafblowers outside the building for 8 hours straight. You think I'm joking, but I'm really, really not. They only broke for lunch. The new company is much more thoughtful. They only brought out two leafblowers, and only at the end of the day, to clean some debris from our walkways.  All the same, leafblowers are very loud and grating. I woke up in a pool of sweat at three in the morning. This is not unusual, but last night's sweat far exceeded the amount of sweat I've sweated on previous occasions. The sheets felt wet beneath me. I could not go back to sleep on them. Fortunately, there is a spare bedroom at my partner's house. Unfortunately, I feel guilty when I use it. I feel bad for leaving him alone in bed. But I really had no choice last night. The sheets were gross. I had to go. After I'd spent the rest of the night in the cool, crisp, DRY sheets of the spare room, I heard my partner starting his day. I got up and apologized for abandoning him. He had no idea what I was talking about. He didn't realize I'd left the bed. I didn't expect to be saying these words today (or ever), but after almost 900 daily posts (!!!) I'm going to have to put this beloved little music blog of mine on a brief hiatus.  My partner is moving this month, I'm trying to finish writing a book, I've got a million things to do, and we've reached the something's-gotta-give stage. I love (love, love, love, love) producing this blog for you, but time is at a premium this month and it takes more time than you might expect for me to put together these little posts every day. #SongoftheDay Vesti la giubba (from Pagliacci, performed by Luciano Pavarotti)

After listening to Tears of a Clown yesterday, how could we not play this well-known aria (is it an aria?) from Pagliacci? Pagliacci is, after all, referenced in Tears of a Clown. The two songs have a lot in common--the theme of putting on a face to perform in public after suffering a heartbreak. I'll tell you outright: I feel out of my depth talking about opera. This, despite being a person with an honest-to-god opera subscription. For real. I go to the opera all the time. I love opera. There are a few opera I feel like I can talk about with confidence, but the snobbism that exists in this realm really keeps me from wanting to say anything at all. Even though Pagliacci is a really famous opera, I've never seen it and I know next to nothing about it. Before looking it up, I had no idea the opera was written by Ruggero Leoncavallo. I don't even know who that is. It's an Italian opera from the late 1800s. After watching this Pavarotti clip, boy, do I want to see it....

#SongoftheDay The Middle (Jimmy Eat World)

We're moving next week. We're not happy about the move, but it's happening nonetheless. I'm going to miss this little house. I know how fortunate I am to live indoors at all, but the past three years have been the only time in my entire adult life when I've been able to live in a house, and going back to living in a high rise isn't something I'm enthusiastic about. The house and town (despite being very small--both the house and the town) are way too expensive to live in. Plus, there's the lack of access to medical care and public transportation.  So we're moving. I'm really sad. And stressed. And busy with all the packing. And my health is poor, as usual.
