Busted

Auto-tweet appears to be busted again. I'm not sure how long this will last, but it means readers aren't getting my songs of the day in front of their eyes. 

So I'm going to hit pause on this blog for now. 

I've scheduled our next song of the day to go live on Saturday. Hopefully the delivery system will be fixed by then, because I have some heartfelt posts coming up. I want people to actually be able to read them.

Last week, I wrote you a post about spending 7+ hours at the hospital with my partner. Just a day in the life of Giselle. When we got home from the hospital, I wanted to crash. I was exhausted beyond exhaustion, but I had to make dinner. My partner's doctors keep emphasizing to us how important it is for him to keep eating, even though it hurts, even though he can't stand the sight of food sometimes. They want him to keep eating in order to keep his swallowing muscles in working order, and in order to keep his weight up. The oncological dietitian we met with explained how important it is to pack every bite with protein and fats. He's supposed to eat dairy with the highest fat content we can find. Put butter and gravy on everything. If in doubt, add ice cream. Sounds like a dream, except that my partner can no longer taste anything. Plus, it hurts. #SongoftheDay Vacation (The Go-Go's)

I'm taking off on you again, although this time it's planned. My partner and I are heading to the cottage his parents built (with their own hands!). The owners are so kind to let us rent it even though it's not a holiday rental--it's a family cottage. Plenty of nostalgia there, for my partner. Unfortunatly, the nostalgia usually makes him mournful of the past, which isn't fun to be around. But we keep trying. We weren't able to go last year because my partner was recovering from cancer treatment and he was too tired to do anything. There was also a lot of medical stuff going on at that time. I was changing dressings because he had open wounds from radiation and skin that was falling off and pus... well, I've probably said too much already. Just wasn't a great time to be around sand and far from hospitals. But we get to go away this year, so we're going and hopefully it won't be sad. #SongoftheDay Obsession (Animotion)

Every time this song comes on the radio, I say to my partner, "This was the theme for Fashion Television, remember?"  He doesn't remember because he didn't spend the entire 80s watching CityTV (aside from Baby Blues, of course).  I never watched Fashion Television, myself (I am the least fashionable person you will ever meet), but it came on after something I did watch (I don't remember what), so I will always equate this song with that show. The other day, the DJ on my 70s/80s/90s radio station introduced this track by saying, "Taking you back to Fashion Television..." and I turned to my partner like: See? See? It's not just me! I didn't post the music video because the sound quality didn't seem amazing, but the video is honestly like the 80s threw up on itself. That decade, man--I'm still recovering from it. #SongoftheDay Maybe Tomorrow (Stereophonics)

You think we're listening to Stereophonics because the word came up in a song the other day, but no! We're listening to them because they are Welsh. And I'm going to admit something shameful: even though one of my grandmothers was from Wales, I still can never tell whether a character on a TV show is played by a Welsh actor who has an actual Welsh accent, or whether it's an actor doing a bad Welsh accent. Isn't that awful? I should be able to tell, considering my partial Welshness.  And I spent a lot of time with that grandmother, as a kid. She used to babysit me and my cousin while our parents were at work. My earliest memories are of watching I Dream of Jeannie with my Welsh grandmother. Mind you, by the time I was born my grandmother did have a type of facial paralysis that affected her speech, so I'm not sure what her accent sounded like before then. Anyway, that's my shameful announcement for today: I can't tell a real Welsh accent from a fake one...

I was walking down the street where I live, on the way home from my local library, the summer sun blazing down on me, when a car stopped at a red light. It was blasting this song. Right at the chorus, too. This mundane occurence filled me with the feels, and I wasn't sure why. Then I looked down and realized I was wearing a dress I've owned since this song first came out. I've got the 90s all over me, baby--head to toe. Well, shoulders to toe. My dress didn't cover my head. And it occured to me that I feel like exactly the same person I was in 1994. Am I? Am I really? Will I always be the same little me? The more I change, the more I stay the same. #SongoftheDay Stereophonic Sound from Silk Stockings (Janis Paige, Fred Astaire)

This song popped into my head just now. Not sure why. Not even sure why I remember it so well. Before today, I'd only ever heard it once, when I watched the movie Silk Stockings on TV as a teenager. It felt like a classic, to me, but I'm not actually sure if too many people have seen it. And, in fact, this song is the only thing I remember about the movie. #SongoftheDay Hide and Seek (Imogen Heap)

While we were checking out my partner's new house, back when he bought it in 2021, I found a closet that seemed like it would be good to hide in. When I said so to my partner, he replied that he doubted we would be playing hide-and-seek. I told him I just like hiding sometimes and he got sad. He remembers my story of finding my mother hiding from my father in a closet when I was a child. I joined her and we hid there together for an entire afternoon. It's the only thing I remember ever doing, just the two of us, throughout my entire childhood. It upsets my partner when I hide because he thinks I'm hiding from him. I'm not. He is not an abusive man. He is very kind and caring.  I hide sometimes because my PTSD is triggered, and he always thinks it's his fault somehow. It's not. The other day, my partner went out to visit a friend who has had multiple strokes and now resides in an assisted living facility. While my partner was out, I watched The Love Boat. Why? Because it was on. And because I remember watching it as a kid. It was pretty hard to sit through, as an adult. The laugh track, for starters. I found I kept leaving the room. When my partner got home, I asked him how his friend was doing. He said, "He was watching The Love Boat." I had to stop myself from singing this theme song to my partner in bed the other night--not to serenade him, only because it was stuck in my head. I thought I might be able to remember all the words, but no. In preparing this post, I discovered that Tress MacNeille did the voices of Chip and Gadget on the show. Simpsons fans (and fans of animation, generally) will know the name.
