 I went out last night to pick up a prescription. On my way home, I walked by a house with a couple outside on their porch. The woman sounded pretty drunk, and she kept saying the same thing over and over: "If I do and you tell me to be quiet, I'll just go dance somewhere else--I don't care!"

I remain fascinated. 

This is obviously an ongoing issue for the couple, but what is the ongoing issue?  What does this woman do (on the dance floor?) that inspires her boyfriend to tell her to be quiet?

I love overhearing snippets of conversations. I have written entire novels based on snippets of conversations.

I'm on Day Two of a migraine that won't let up, even with the help of every medication my doctor has prescribed me. Days like this, when I can't stand, can't sit, can't look at a screen (this post will be brief), I tend to have dark thoughts. Weather is my biggest migraine trigger, and travel never helps. Driving into the city during a snow/slush/rainstorm yesterday tipped me over the edge and I have not recovered yet. We listened to the classical radio station as we drove, and this was played during our drive. That's why it's our song of the day. (Starts soft, but doesn't stay soft. There's a joke in there somewhere, but I'm in too much pain to find it.) I was watching a murder mystery the other day, and the detective found a clue in the victim's journal: it was an ancient sepia photograph of the woman when she was a child. The photograph was dated... 1984. 1984? Okay, speaking as someone who was also a child in 1984, I can tell you that none of my childhood photos are sepia-toned! I do have quite a few black-and-white pictures of my sister and myself, but that's just because my father was kind of artsy with his camera and he would sometimes buy black-and-white film. But the vast majority of photos taken in 1984 were in full colour. Definitely not sepia! I wondered how old the prop person on that TV show was, and if they thought photography in 1984 was basically the same as photography in 1884. This is a cover of a Bowie song, by the way. What is this? Where am I? What's it all about?

All good questions. Let me explain. My name is Giselle and I'm your new best friend. Well, maybe not "best friend." A best friend usually listens in addition to talking, but that's not me. What I will do is be here every day, starting June 1 2019, to share with you whichever song pops into my head. Why?  What's the point? Well, here's the thing: I'm a writer. It's a pretty lonely job. Over the years, I've become increasingly socially isolated and you know what? It sucks. It sucks bad. The truth of the matter is that a lot of us are socially isolated, these days. #SongoftheDay Watching the Detectives (The Henry Girls)

Gosh, I love this song.  The original Elvis Costello version was playing on the radio (which was playing through my headphones, through my phone) as I descended into a ravine near my partner's house. There's a mulberry tree in full berry down there.  As I started picking those delicious purple fruits, the mosquitos came out of nowhere to attack. They were biting me everywhere skin was exposed (which is to say my hands and my head), but they seemed to like the flesh near my hairline the best. I started swatting without thinking--without realizing I was holding extremely ripe mulberries between my fingers. Suddenly, I could feel the juice streaming down my face. Now I was batting away the mosquitos while simultaneously trying to wipe what might appear to be blood from my head, and thinking, "Gee, I hope I don't see anyone." The mosquitos were too much. This year, I've been reviewing old contracts. Specifically, I've been reviewing short story contracts with publishers who placed my work in anthologies. Terms vary, but often publishers asked for an exclusivity period of 1, 3, or 5 years before rights then reverted to me and I could republish those pieces of fiction. Time goes by fast. That's what I've learned. Some of the pieces with the 5-year exclusivity period, I basically forgot about. Five years felt like forever, when I signed those contracts.  Turns out five years goes by in a snap, and I could have published a lot of these stories ages ago. Well, I'm playing catch-up now. After I'd pulled yesterday's song of the day, YouTube decided that traditional Irish music is the only thing I want to listen to. Naturally, this tune was suggested. I had to laugh, because the only time I have ever heard this song, it was performed by my sister and her first-year fiddle class. I kind of couldn't believe it when my sister told me she was taking a fiddle class. She is a classical pianist. She has a degree in music. She knows how to play the violin. I never would have imagined she might have any interest in playing music that wasn't... classical. I want to point out that she was not a child when she took this class. She was in her thirties. Maybe she was trying to break out of her comfort zone. Anyway, it was really entertaining to see my sister, who was once a music teacher, participating in this concert where she was a learner. My partner has been asked to speak at the memorial service for a lifelong friend who died last month. They'd known each other since they were babies. He is currently working on what he'd like to say, and he's listening to Paul Simon. The last time I walked into the kitchen, this was playing and my partner said, "I love this song." I asked what he loved about it and he said, "Lots of things. But it's about putting a child to bed. What could be better than that?"
