 Yesterday I was thinking about how we might see ourselves one way but strangers might see us as someone totally different. It's great to see Black Indigenous representation.  The neighbourhood I grew up in has a large Black Indigenous population. Two years ago I met a group of young people from the neighbourhood who were taking part in a program (taught by a fellow Black Indigenous instructor) where they were not only building on their knowledge of traditional skills in areas like beading, but also learning different ways to make a living in the arts sector.  Their instructor is an amazing woman. I'm composing this post in the middle of the night.  Sex puts my partner to sleep, but it energizes me.  I often end up watching TV on the internet after he's fallen asleep.  Well... I'm trying to write.  But instead of that, I'm pulling out body hair in clumps.   After staying up late last night to record an audiobook, I was awoken in a shock of noise.  They must be renovating an apartment near mine.  They always seem to be renovating an apartment near mine.  As soon as older tenants move out, they tear the place apart, knock down walls, and rebuild it into a modern open-concept suite.  Then they jack the rent way up for the next people moving in. My apartment has the same walls and cupboard doors and even the same oven it had when it was built in the mid-70s.  If ever I move out, it'll be torn apart too.  The rent will no longer be affordable.  They'll stain the floors dark and put in a stainless steel dishwasher.  Meanwhile, my taps leak and I barely have water pressure in my kitchen.  Yesterday, my partner's neighbours brought home the most beautiful baby I've seen in my entire life. We happened to be out on the balcony when they arrived, as was another neighbour in our building.  In non-Covid times, they surely would have been greeted by friends and family. All sorts of people who'd known them for more than two years would have been there at the door to mark the occasion: carrying that little bundle of joy into the apartment for the first time. It's a special moment.  The air was electric as we greeted the blissful new mom.  I wasn't sure I'd make it in time to post today's song. It would have been the first missed day in the 2-year history of this blog, but I did something stupid and I'm paying for it big-time. I get migraines, and they're debilitating. The other night, I could feel one coming on and instead of resting my head, I drank a glass of wine.  I barely drink. And I rarely drink. I rarely, barely drink. When I do, a little goes a long way. For me, a glass of wine is like a magnum for a normal person. So I woke up the next morning with a migraine AND a hangover.  The other day, my partner came home from his bike ride majorly saddened.  He'd ridden through a conservation area and seen a mama duck and her five little ducklings paddling around a small pool of water. The water was full of garbage. So we went right back out to pick up all that trash. While we were at it, some cyclists made a point of harassing my partner and yelling "Fucking environmentalists!" as they rode off.  Wha... wha... why?  You are IN NATURE.  Last week, my partner was really down on himself because he broke a glass jar one day and then the next day he broke another glass jar.  It wasn't a big deal, but it was a big deal to him.
