#SongoftheDay Tuna the Food of My Soul (Garrison Keillor ft. Jean Redpath, Prudence Johnson & Philip Brunelle)

Image
I'm watching Murder She Wrote and eating casserole straight from the pot.  The egg noodles and peas and mushroom soup got me thinking about one night more than a year ago, when my siblings and I returned to my mother's house after spending more than ten hours with her in the emergency room. She'd been released too early after a cancer surgery, and had to be readmitted.  That process should not have taken as long as it did. We were exhausted after the day we'd spent at the hospital. It was 11:30 at night, and we opened the fridge to find a casserole my aunt had made for us.  We heated it in the microwave, but started eating it before it was even very warm.  None of us had eaten since breakfast, and we consumed that casserole robotically.  We ate huge amounts of food.  The day had been so stressful and full of worry and emotion that I can't imagine a more perfect food than bland casserole.  In a certain context, there's nothing better than a casserole. If someone

I had a story about a fish.  Or maybe it was a joke about a fish.  But now I forget.  Maybe it was about tarot--the fish in a cup?  Now, as I listen to this song, I'm singing "fish in a cup, fish in a cup, fish in a cup, fish in a cup" madly, on repeat.  Sorry I can't remember my fish story.  Maybe another time. #SongoftheDay Grazing in the Grass (Hugh Masekela)

Every time my partner walks in on me humming Low Rider, he says: "Grazing in the Grass! Hugh Masekela!" At first, I didn't know what he was talking about. Now I do, but he's still wrong. Is it me or does this tune sound nothing like Low Rider? Maybe I'm just bad at humming.  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay The Joker (Steve Miller Band)

The other day I talked about putting together a playlist of fun 80s music for when I'm feeling down. Well, I just consumed half a tube of Poppin' Fresh's triple-bleached goo and I could sure go for something funky.   That's why I'm compiling a fun 70s playlist to listen to while I work. Usually, I don't listen to music while writing--I find it too distracting--but there are three leaf blowers going outside my window and other cutting, grating metallic noises I can't quite identify. 70s music is far preferable.  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Love Will Keep Us Together (Captain and Tennille)

There is a Simpsons reference for every situation. This song came on the other day, and I struggled not to sing along with Homer's lyrics of "Some sweet-talking guy in a thong hands you a bong" etc.  I held back because my partner doesn't get my Simpsons references. He never watched the show. He's seen a few episodes at my house, because sometimes I have my DVDs on when he's around, but that's not the same as having seen every episode from the first nine seasons... oh, I don't know... a hundred times?  Probably more than that.   When The Simpsons was on in syndication (and I mean WIDE syndication), I'm sure I watched at least four episodes a day.  And that's a bare minimum. I thought I stopped watching The Simpsons once the 90s were over, but the song I made reference to above is apparently from a 2005 episode.  So I guess I still watched here and there in the new millennium. I don't think I've seen a new episode in the past ten years,

The other day, I mentioned I'd found a music channel through our cable network that plays all 80s music.  Well, I found another channel that plays all 70s music, and I've found it to be much more collectively palatable to my household--which consists of myself and my partner.  It's got music he likes (Carole King et al) and music I like (disco and funk).  We used to always sing this song as "Wake up; I might sit on you." We know those weren't the lyrics, but we didn't care. #SongoftheDay Opposites Attract (Paula Abdul)

Image
A couple weeks ago, I wrote about how happy music from the 80s makes me. In the interest of being more happy, I put together a playlist of 80s music to play when I'm feeling down.  IT WORKS.  The other day, I happened to be listening to it all afternoon and then something happened--one of those little non-events that can easily set me off if I'm not in control--and I noticed "hey, this is one of those things I usually overreact to," but I didn't overreact. Thank. God. I'm so sick of the stupid trauma-driven fights I often start with my partner for reasons that have nothing to do with anything that even happened this millennium.  Anyway, I found a TV channel that plays 80s music nonstop. I have it on right now. They just played this song and it made me incredibly happy. I had this record when I was young. When I looked up Blondie's Call Me yesterday, this song was suggested. #SongoftheDay Call Me (Blondie)

I love this song. I don't love what's been happening today. In fact, my stomach is knotted with anxiety. Maybe this has happened to you: a telemarketer phones and you say no thanks to their offering and hang up. But it doesn't stop there. They call back. Again. And again. And again.  And again. They're abusive. They threaten you. It's terrifying. This happened to me once almost twenty years ago, and it happened to my partner today. Even though I don't think the caller is going to show up on our doorstep, I am still tied in knots with anxiety that the phone is going to ring again.  I've also realized that this event is tapping into some old trauma from when my father used to call us non-stop, threatening to kill me and my mom and my siblings. We lived that way for years. It was one of the most frightening periods of my life.  So I'm having a pretty bad day, over here. And somebody's chainsawing something outside my window right now, so I can't ev

#SongoftheDay In Living Color Opening Theme (Heavy D & the Boyz)

Image
Hold on to your horses--we're not leaving 1990 yet. Maybe you remember a show called In Living Color? My partner doesn't, but I watched it religiously. My cousin and I would dance along with the fly girls. We thought our moves were amazing. I'm pretty sure they weren't. But that's not what this story is about. There was a boy I went to school with who would sing the lyrics as, "You can do what you want to do... UNDER THE COVERS."  My friends and I were so innocent we found those words absolutely scandalous. Oh my gosh, under the covers? That is so naughty!  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Do The Bartman (Bart Simpson)

Image
Yesterday I mentioned the album The Simpsons Sing the Blues . Well, this song was on that album.  I haven't seen the video since it first aired--I believe in 1990--but as soon as I rewatched it, I remembered that first viewing like it was yesterday.  I'm just going by memory, here, so I could be wrong (I often am), but I remember this music video airing just after an episode of The Simpsons. It might have been before, but I think it was after. The Simpsons aired on Thursday nights on Fox, back then, and I'm assuming this video and the song were meant to make a splash. I'm not sure they did.  The Simpsons were definitely huge, right out of the gate.  Everywhere you turned, there was merch and counterfeit merch. I remember there was a very popular T-shirt that had Bart on it and underneath it said: Underachiever and Proud Of It. My nerdy friend had a counterfeit sweatshirt that said: Overachiever and Proud Of It.  I don't know where his mother found it, but she was r

#SongoftheDay God Bless the Child (Billie Holiday)

I did not grow up listening to jazz. The first time I ever heard this song, it was performed by Lisa Simpson on the Simpsons Sing the Blues album, which I owned on cassette tape. Now, my partner lives in a neighbourhood where there are always buskers performing. We see the same few musicians every day, and I'm pretty familiar with their repertoire. When I was out yesterday, I walked by a vocalist I'd never heard before. She was singing a gorgeous rendition of this tune. As her voice filled my ears, I looked up and saw a child... wearing a Simpsons T-shirt. Now, that was very common in the early 90s, but most days I do not see anyone wearing Simpsons gear. I thought it was so funny that I was hearing this song I associated with little Lisa and seeing this kid wearing a Simpsons top. #SongoftheDay What's Next? (Drake)

Image
I dreamed about Drake again.  He wasn't coming on to me this time.  In this dream, he arrived on the porch of my partner's apartment and started cleaning a chair off for his girlfriend. His girlfriend then came inside looking for a particular kind of cleanser, and we searched for it together.  Drake told me he needed to go to the cemetery to pay his respects, but before he left we looked up into the sky (which was dark) and there were these huge kites flying. Gigantic kites. But, going back to the start of the dream, when I saw Drake approaching, I worried a bit because the playlist I was listening to was full of The Weeknd, but no Drake. I didn't know how he'd feel about that. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay The Sound of Silence (Simon and Garfunkel)

Image
I had an episode of The Simpsons on last week called Lady Bouvier's Lover, I think?  It's the one where Grandpa Simpson courts Marge's mother. I've referred to it often during Covid, because it's got that one scene where Grandpa goes into the retirement home to grab Mrs. Bouvier and he comes out with the wrong woman, and that old lady says, "Can I come too?"   You know what I'm talking about. Anyway, I quote that line a lot, these days. I've got nothing going on, so any time my partner is going anywhere, I'm right on that "Can I come too?" At the end of the episode, there's a spoof on this song called "The Sound of Grandpa," which is what I was going to play for you... but my partner loves Simon and Garfunkel, so I'm going for the original. In his honour. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. Tell a

You can think of this as another call-back to Birdemic, or you can think of it as the song I heard a busker singing (badly...) when I was out for a walk two days ago. #SongoftheDay Useless Information (Baron Vaughn)

Image
This is so weird: yesterday I was going to schedule the Duck Tales theme as an upcoming song of the day, but I didn't because I'd just scheduled the Animaniacs theme and I worried it would be too many cartoon themes in one week. Also yesterday, I was telling my partner how bad my memory sucks. I'm terrible at remembering important life events, but I have no trouble remembering song lyrics. At the time, I'm pretty sure the Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers theme was clanging around in my head.  When I stumbled upon this clip from Baron Vaughn's standup today, I was blown away by the confluence of what's been going on in my head and what he's saying in his act. This is wild. So, not exactly a song of the day. More a medley of early 90s cartoon themes.  I should be embarrassed to be so familiar with these tunes, considering I was not a small child in the 90s. But, as I've mentioned before, I wanted to be an animator when I was younger, so I watched a lot of car

#SongoftheDay Would You Like To Buy An O? (Sesame Street)

When I was in high school, a friend of mine was taking a film course. She had an assignment to create a music video, and this was the song she chose. I'm pretty sure she shot it in a parking garage. #SongoftheDay Animaniacs Theme Song

Image
I woke up in the middle of the night with this song in my head, but only the "pay or play contracts" part. I kept thinking, "What kid would know what that means?"  When I told my partner what had woken me up (ie. this song), he responded gravely by saying, "Oh, gee, I'm sorry to hear that." heh. There are worse things in the world. This show also reminds me of the episode of South Park where Cartman's in jail or something and there's a character who's like, "There are two kinds of kids: kids who like Animaniacs and kids who don't like Animaniacs." I don't even know which kind of kid I am.  Was Animaniacs the show that had that "Would you like to take a survey" bit?   Do you like beans?  Do you like George Wendt?  Would you watch a movie about George Wendt eating beans?   If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends ab

#SongoftheDay Duke of Earl (Gene Chandler)

Image
My partner started singing this song the other day (I say "started" because he didn't finish) and I always try not to make any sudden movements when my partner sings. He is so shy about his singing voice and it happens so rarely that when he pipes up, I just keep doing what I was doing. Sometimes I'm singing and he joins in. In that case, I keep singing.  This time, I think we were doing a crossword. All I got out of him was "Duke, duke, duke, duke of Earl," but that's more singing than I usually hear out of his mouth. #SongoftheDay I'm Still Standing (Elton John)

Image
We listened to Elton John last week, but this song is stuck in my head and I want to sing along. It always reminds me of Cityline (Canadians know the show) from the 80s, when Marilyn Denis was the host. This was the theme song for a while. Remember that? Toronto? Remember? #SongoftheDay Theme from Laverne and Shirley (Cyndi Grecco)

Image
Yesterday I talked about a made-for-TV movie from the 80s called Earth Angel. Well, Cindy Williams happens to be in that movie, and it got me wanting to watch Laverne and Shirley, even though I was never particularly fond of that show.  My mom loved it. Seeing that it's Mother's Day, I guess this one's for her? It's not even a good theme song. Schlemiel, schlimazel, y'all! I've mentioned before that I watch a lot of RiffTrax.  Bridget and Mary Jo recently released their riff on a made-for-TV movie called Earth Angel and I bought it immediately. Why? #SongoftheDay Like A Prayer (Madonna)

Image
Yesterday I started telling you about walking around in a hormone-infused bad mood while singing the Garbage song "I'm Only Happy When It Rains."  But I didn't tell you the end of the story. I walked past a house that was being constructed upon, and the contractors were blasting this song: Madonna's "Like A Prayer."  I'm sure I've already told you that Like A Prayer was the first album I ever bought with my own money, so it's got a special place of nostalgia in my heart.   When I heard this song as I walked past the construction site, it brought an instant smile to my lips. Did the smile lift my mood, or did the song? Maybe each was a contributing factor. Although, it was the song that made me smile, so I guess it's down to the song. The question remains: is it better to scrap all our sad songs (read yesterday's post if you don't know what I'm talking about), or do they have a place in our healing process?  Could I have skippe

#SongoftheDay Sad Songs (Elton John)

Image
I watched a video on Youtube today where the vlogger said that when she erased all the sad songs from her music collection, she started to feel her mood lifting. I've been thinking about this all day.  Well, maybe not all day. I've had a pretty terrible day, to be honest.  Perimenopause is an awful time of life.  I don't want to speak for anyone else, but I'm having a really hard time with my body and my moods. All day, I kept swinging from angry to sad.  I didn't want to subject my partner to too much of my emotional chaos, so I went for a walk.  As soon as I left the apartment, it started to rain.  Of course it did.  The song that popped into my head was Garbage's "I'm Only Happy When It Rains." I had my mask on, so I sang it to myself while I walked around. Did it make me feel better, to sing that song?  Did it make me feel worse?  Or was I glad for the commiseration?  Check in tomorrow to find out the answer--same bat-time, same bat-station. If

#SongoftheDay Don't Stop Believin' (Journey)

Image
This song is in my head because I published a new book in my Lesbian Diaries series the other day, and the subtitle for this one ( Poppy's Diary ) is "Just A Small Town Girl."  A few years back, I watched a documentary about the new lead singer for Journey, but I don't remember anything about it. Nothing sticks, in my brain, except song lyrics and quips from 90s sitcoms. Every time I hear Journey, I think about an episode of Just Shoot Me where Maya's been through a break-up or something and all she wants to do is eat candy and listen to Journey. #SongoftheDay Hotline Bling (Drake)

I woke up at 4 in the morning out of a dream where my partner and I were visiting his sister's grandchildren. For some reason, Drake was there. And Drake wanted me bad. He thought I was a totally foxy MILF.  The shameful thing is that I don't know anything about Drake except what he looks like and that he's from Toronto. I am not familiar with his music.
