#SongoftheDay Fever (Little Willie John)
A local paper recently featured the image of an old quarantine sign that had been posted on a household where scarlet fever was present.
When my partner saw this, he told me that his family had been quarantined when he was a child and he had scarlet fever. I asked him if one of those signs had been plastered to his front door, and he started to say no, but then he stopped. "I was up in bed the whole time, so I really don't know."
Despite being sick and quarantined, my partner recalls this time with great joy. "My dad was home. I loved it." My partner had a lot of health problems as a child, so he was used to being at home with his mother. But, for a matter of weeks while quarantined, his father was around to tell him stories and play games. He remembers those weeks as some of the happiest of his childhood.
I thought scarlet fever had been wiped out by the time I was born, so it was a real surprise when my baby sister caught it in the 1990s. She was quite ill, but my family wasn't quarantined or anything. I guess it's good to be locked down with your family if you like the people you live with. Those of us who grew up in households plagued by domestic violence know how bad home can get at the best of times.
