#SongoftheDay Linger (The Cranberries)

Yesterday I mentioned a mix tape I made for someone else.

Today I'm thinking about a mix tape someone else made me.

Cleaning out my mother's hoarder basement, I came across a tape a friend of mine made me in the early 90s. It was primarily Cranberries music. No, scratch that. It was completely Cranberries music. Scratch that--it was just a Cranberries tape that he'd re-taped onto a blank cassette.

As far as mix tapes go, it wasn't the best I've ever received--not that there's been stiff competition. I only ever received two, as far as I can remember. Not that I don't like The Cranberries! Only, if you're going to make a mix tape, you need to mix it up a little.

What is this? Where am I? What's it all about?

All good questions. Let me explain. My name is Giselle and I'm your new best friend. Well, maybe not "best friend." A best friend usually listens in addition to talking, but that's not me. What I will do is be here every day, starting June 1 2019, to share with you whichever song pops into my head. Why?  What's the point? Well, here's the thing: I'm a writer. It's a pretty lonely job. I was watching a murder mystery the other day, and the detective found a clue in the victim's journal: it was an ancient sepia photograph of the woman when she was a child. The photograph was dated... 1984. 1984? Okay, speaking as someone who was also a child in 1984, I can tell you that none of my childhood photos are sepia-toned! I do have quite a few black-and-white pictures of my sister and myself, but that's just because my father was kind of artsy with his camera and he would sometimes buy black-and-white film. But the vast majority of photos taken in 1984 were in full colour. Definitely not sepia! I wondered how old the prop person on that TV show was, and if they thought photography in 1984 was basically the same as photography in 1884. This is a cover of a Bowie song, by the way. #SongoftheDay Watching the Detectives (The Henry Girls)

Gosh, I love this song.  The original Elvis Costello version was playing on the radio (which was playing through my headphones, through my phone) as I descended into a ravine near my partner's house. There's a mulberry tree in full berry down there.  As I started picking those delicious purple fruits, the mosquitos came out of nowhere to attack. They were biting me everywhere skin was exposed (which is to say my hands and my head), but they seemed to like the flesh near my hairline the best. I started swatting without thinking--without realizing I was holding extremely ripe mulberries between my fingers. Suddenly, I could feel the juice streaming down my face. Now I was batting away the mosquitos while simultaneously trying to wipe what might appear to be blood from my head, and thinking, "Gee, I hope I don't see anyone." The mosquitos were too much. I'm on Day Two of a migraine that won't let up, even with the help of every medication my doctor has prescribed me. Days like this, when I can't stand, can't sit, can't look at a screen (this post will be brief), I tend to have dark thoughts. Weather is my biggest migraine trigger, and travel never helps. Driving into the city during a snow/slush/rainstorm yesterday tipped me over the edge and I have not recovered yet. We listened to the classical radio station as we drove, and this was played during our drive. That's why it's our song of the day. (Starts soft, but doesn't stay soft. There's a joke in there somewhere, but I'm in too much pain to find it.) If I'm going to mention The Twilight Zone (as I did yesterday), I should tell you this story: a couple weeks ago my partner and I were at my apartment. I've got a bunch of Twilight Zone episodes on the PVR, so I picked one to watch before bed. It was the episode where William Shatner takes advice from a napkin holder. My partner isn't interested in paranormal stuff (although I would argue that this particular episode is more psychological than paranormal) and at the end he said, "It was interesting to see William Shatner so young. I've never seen that before." I thought he was talking about the episode--he'd never seen that episode before. But no. He had never seen The Twilight Zone! Like, what? Shocking. #SongoftheDay Whiskey in the Jar (Thin Lizzy)

After I'd pulled yesterday's song of the day, YouTube decided that traditional Irish music is the only thing I want to listen to. Naturally, this tune was suggested. I had to laugh, because the only time I have ever heard this song, it was performed by my sister and her first-year fiddle class. I kind of couldn't believe it when my sister told me she was taking a fiddle class. She is a classical pianist. She has a degree in music. She knows how to play the violin. I never would have imagined she might have any interest in playing music that wasn't... classical. I want to point out that she was not a child when she took this class. She was in her thirties. Maybe she was trying to break out of her comfort zone. Anyway, it was really entertaining to see my sister, who was once a music teacher, participating in this concert where she was a learner. My partner has been asked to speak at the memorial service for a lifelong friend who died last month. They'd known each other since they were babies. He is currently working on what he'd like to say, and he's listening to Paul Simon. The last time I walked into the kitchen, this was playing and my partner said, "I love this song." I asked what he loved about it and he said, "Lots of things. But it's about putting a child to bed. What could be better than that?"
