Went to bed last night feeling like crap. Woke up this morning feeling worse.

I have zero voice. Like, I try to say words and no sound comes out--just the odd squeak. So, obviously, I start singing Morning Has Broken to myself. Singing when you have no voice is hilarious. To me it is, because I'm generally a pretty good singer. But now I go for a note and hit a completely different one, or my throat just kind of hisses.

I wish you could hear me right now. I sound awful and it's the funniest thing. Maybe that's the cough syrup talking. At least my illness entertains me, because my throat is not a happy camper right now.

Hope my voice comes back so I can like... record audiobooks and stuff.  You know, do my job...

Last week, I wrote you a post about spending 7+ hours at the hospital with my partner. Just a day in the life of Giselle. When we got home from the hospital, I wanted to crash. I was exhausted beyond exhaustion, but I had to make dinner. My partner's doctors keep emphasizing to us how important it is for him to keep eating, even though it hurts, even though he can't stand the sight of food sometimes. They want him to keep eating in order to keep his swallowing muscles in working order, and in order to keep his weight up. The oncological dietitian we met with explained how important it is to pack every bite with protein and fats. He's supposed to eat dairy with the highest fat content we can find. The other day, I mentioned a dream I had that characterized marriage as being locked in a dull, dark room. Well, the next night I dreamed that I showed up at my aunt's cottage (my aunt doesn't have a cottage) with my wedding dress (I don't have a wedding dress). Clearly, marriage is bubbling around in my unconscious mind. I never wanted to get married, when I was young. Now... I'm not sure I have particularly strong feelings either way. If I lean toward wanting marriage in my life, it's more for practical (legal, financial, etc) reasons, at this point. My partner and I were both self-sufficient adults when we joined forces. I don't feel like we ever really "built" a life together. I still have my own home. He has his. His is better. We spent the summer at my place while he underwent daily cancer treatments in the city. Today, as I was leaving my building, one of my neighbours was a total asshole to me. This song has been in my head ever since.  I can be rude and mean to people, but not out of the blue. It's usually because they've done something rude or mean to me. I actually care deeply about everyone I come across, and I guess that's why it hurts me so much when people lack compassion or can't see their way to showing kindness to others.  I grew up in a neighbourhood that's known for drugs and gang violence, and people showed each other more respect there than they do in the ritzy rich-people area I live in now (not because I'm ritzy or rich--because I got lucky when the rental market was in the toilet 15+ years ago).  The moral of the story is that I'd like to be able to leave my house without getting all riled up by jerks, but I don't see that happening any time soon. What is this? Where am I? What's it all about?

All good questions. Let me explain. My name is Giselle and I'm your new best friend. Well, maybe not "best friend." A best friend usually listens in addition to talking, but that's not me. What I will do is be here every day, starting June 1 2019, to share with you whichever song pops into my head. Why?  What's the point? Well, here's the thing: I'm a writer. It's a pretty lonely job. There's so much I could write, in relation to this song, about caregiving and the worn-out feeling that comes with being needed too much and for too long.  I could write five thousand posts about times caregiving tasks have triggered a trauma response in me, because my busted limbic system is stuck in a time when I was neglected and parentified in childhood, when I couldn't be a proper kid because I had to take care of other people in a home that was not safe. But it's going to be exhausting, if I write all that, and I would much rather sit back and listen to this beautiful performance while rain and fall leaves pelt my window, and the sky looms ominous and grey over the neighbour's roofline.  I'd rather close my eyes for a while and disappear into this song. I was in the car with my partner, browsing radio stations while we were stuck in traffic on the Don Valley, when this song came on a station I'd never heard of. I contentedly stopped searching and sat back, nodding my head to the music. Grunge is the reason I don't know how to dance. All I know how to do is nod. Before long, my partner commented that this song is very repetitive... which is true, I guess, but seeing as the early 90s was a formative time for me, Nirvana is pure nostalgia. I'll be honest with you: I didn't know Badfinger was a band until I googled musicians from Wales. I was familiar with this song, but I never knew who it was by. My partner and I have been watching a lot of major league baseball lately. This song gets played a lot when they're cutting to commercials. Years ago, my mother used to get free tickets to Jays games from her boss. He had season's tickets, but he often couldn't use them, so he'd give them away at the last minute. My mother would phone me, because I could be expected to be available on short notice, but I wasn't enthusiastic about going. I have fond childhood memories of going to Jays games back when they were played at Exhibition Stadium, but as an adult, I found baseball super boring. I will admit that my mother would sometimes bribe me with candy. Even though I was a full-grown adult at the time, the candy bribes worked.  For a while.  Then I started to find the games so boring, even candy wouldn't cut it. Now?
