#SongoftheDay in Celebration of #Sesame50: Pinball (Sesame Street)

I'm Giselle and I'm deliriously excited to be here. You know what they say: a song and a visit a day keep the loneliness at bay!

I was agonizing (in a good way) over which song to select for our first day together when, on Twitter, I noticed that Sesame Street is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Well, the song that popped into my head instantly--the song I most associate with the Sesame Street of my childhood--is smooth and funky and cooler than cool. Does it have a name? I don't really know. Let's just call it Pinball, and let's listen to it together, twelve times over.

This weekend, I took a much-needed day off from hospital duty to go to the symphony. I've never seen the place so packed, but it was no surprise, with a double-bill like Rachmaninoff's 2nd piano concerto and Scheherazade. Elim Chan did a powerhouse job. This song reminds me of high school, though I'm not sure why. Possibly because I was big into New Age stuff back then. I've mentioned before that I had a palmistry poster hanging on my bedroom wall. Just yesterday I was cleaning out my closet and I found the journal where I wrote down all my tarot readings, as a teen. Many of the questions were like "How am I going to do on my math test?" Was I a nerd or what? Everything New Age appealed to me back then, and this song appealed to me as well. The funny thing about middle age, or midlife crisis, or whatever phase of existence I find myself in, is that the things that spoke to me as a teen have come back to the fore. I've started doing tarot readings again. I listen to astrological forecasts more often than weather forecasts. And I do quite like this song. It's easy to get addicted to the news, these days. The world is a 24/7 train wreck. How can we look away? My mother's basically been self-isolating since January. Well, not really, but she had her surgery, she was in hospital for weeks, then when she got out she couldn't leave the house, and by the time she'd recovered enough to be out and about, she wasn't allowed to.  Her immune system is severely compromised. She is very much at risk. Thank goodness my brother lives with her.  She also has lots of friends and sisters who are more than willing to drop groceries at her door. I didn't mean to write so much about my mom.  I only mentioned her to say that she tells me she often turns on the news first thing in the morning, and suddenly it's afternoon.  All she's done in that time is watch the news. I needed new pyjamas, so, naturally, I went to the supermarket. They sell clothes for cheap. I am nothing if not cheap. Whenever people buy me pyjamas (and by "people" I mean my mother, because she is the only person who buys me pyjamas), they buy me flannel pyjamas. As a permimenopausal person, let me tell you, flannel does not work. Even when I sleep naked, I wake up drenched in sweat. So I needed to find something I could sleep in that wasn't hot, and what I found (at the supermarket) were these adorable soft fluttery little shorts. And they were made of a printed fabric. And that print was of sea flora, tridents, and purple Ursula heads.  Ursula, from The Little Mermaid. My partner has a love-hate relationship with this song. Every time the commercial comes on, he notes that it's remarkably well-done, but since when do people grab their butts and sing about diarrhea onscreen? 1989, I guess? A grocery flyer came through my mail slot today. Across the top, it said: BACK TO ROUTINE. As soon as I read that, this song jumped into my head. I've been listening to it ever since. Over the holidays, visitors to this site dropped drastically. It worried me, I must admit. We've been listening to some pretty heavy songs the past few days. We need a break. This is a song my father used to sing to me, as a child. Inspired by it, I stuck a piece of bright blue bubble gum to my bedpost (I wanted to find out for myself the answer to the question this song poses), but I got in trouble when my mother, who apparently was not familiar with the song, spotted my bedpost gum. After days of not being able to leave the house due to migraines AND salmonella poisoning (what a combination...) I finally went out to buy a few groceries. I often use a walker to get around, and that was the case today.  On my way home, there was a snooty rich lady standing in the sidewalk so that I couldn't get by. I asked her if she could move and she didn't even look at me, just took the slightest half-step forward so she was still blocking my path. There was no way I could get by her with my walker. She also had a dog. Her dog was completely blocking my path. I asked her if she could move her dog and she didn't even acknowledge my existence. She did not move her dog.  It's always bothered me, being treated this way--being treated like I'm so inconsequential that I'm not even worth acknowledging--but I think it bothers me in a much deeper way when I'm using a mobility aid. I first heard this song, but not this version, in the 1990s.  If you were watching TV back then, you'd have been familiar with Ally McBeal. My aunt had the soundtrack from the show, and I listened to it obsessively while housesitting for her one summer. Ally McBeal's artist-in-residence was Vonda Shepard, and it was her cover of The End of the World I'd been most familiar with until I looked up the original a couple years back. Maybe now's not the right moment to be playing songs on this theme (and I've got a few of them lined up), but this global pandemic we're living through seems post-apolyptic to me, at times.
