#SongoftheDay Neighbours Theme Song (Barry Crocker)
I just watched an episode of You Can't Ask That (the Canadian version of the show) that featured people with Schizophrenia. One guy on the program mentioned that people probably think of those with Schizophrenia as dangerous because of negative media portrayals. He also mentioned that you only hear about someone having Schizophrenia if they've done something newsworthy; you don't hear stories about this guy with Schizophrenia who had a pleasant day.
A few of my relatives have Schizophrenia, so I'd like to tell you a nice story about one of them.
My uncle lived in the same apartment building for decades. He experiences paranoid delusions, and he commonly thought his neighbours were spying on him, bugging his apartment, had plans to make his life awful, stuff like that. He avoided other tenants by staying inside his unit most of the time. My aunts would come over to pick up his laundry, because using the laundry room in his building was too agitating for him.
When he was coming up on his 65th birthday, he learned that he might qualify to get into a building for low-income seniors. He told my aunts this was something he wanted, and they did all the paperwork for him. They advocated hard to get him into a small seniors' residence, and made all the arrangements for his move, because he requires assistance with that sort of stuff.
One of my aunts wrote to me last year, telling me what a huge difference this move has made in my uncle's life. He sits outside and chats with other residents. He enjoys these interactions. He's even started doing his own laundry for the first time ever, because he doesn't mind using the laundry room in this new building.
It's been a good change for him, and he's happier than he's ever been. So there's a mundane but hope-inspiring story about a relative of mine who has Schizophrenia, and whose life is improving.
