#SongoftheDay More, More, More (Andrea True Connection)

Image
We're not leaving the 70s just yet.  And, in fact, we're featuring this song for a very specific reason.  I didn't grow up listening to disco. I was aware of it, but disco was dead by the time I was growing up, so it existed in the periphery of my musical consciousness.  It's not like I'd never heard this disco mainstay until recently. I'm sure I've heard it many times. But I'd never paid attention to it, or focused very much on the track.  When I listened to it last week, my ears went up like antennae--you know, the way rabbits' do. I recognized something. This track was intensely sampled in a song from the late 90s. But which one? Come back tomorrow to find out (although you can probably figure it out on your own).  To be continued... If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. In an effort to feel young, I'm reminding myself that this fad came before my time. I did the Macarena. I might even have been known to Achy-Breaky-Heart. But I never did The Hustle.  Still, this classic 70s disco tune is so ubiquitous that it remains implanted in my brain. I don't know how to dance to it, but it's in there. Okay, so we're moving on from the 80s to the 90s--or 1990, at least.  When I used to tape music videos from MuchMusic onto VHS, this one was on my special tape. My favourite tape. This song makes me stupidly happy. There's a lot of trippy flashing/strobing, though, so if you're sensitive to that stuff you might not want to watch the video. Did you think we'd escaped the 80s? Oh no, we have not. There is no escape. The 80s is forever. Although, I gotta say, once you reach the older age brackets the advice flips: if you can come, do it--otherwise we're gonna be here all night.    If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay I've Been Thinking About You (Londonbeat)

It's morning. I'm lying in bed with the curtains closed, listening to songs like this--songs from the past, nostalgic ones that bring me comfort. I got out of bed once, only briefly, to turn on the air conditioner. When I was out there, I stepped on something unidentifiable that embedded itself in my foot. The world outside my bed seems like a hostile place today, especially to my feet. There is much to do. Much adulting to do. I don't wanna do it. I don't wanna. #SongoftheDay The Bad Touch -- The Eiffel 65 Remix (Bloodhound Gang)

Image
Yesterday I talked about never having been to a club in my youth.  My best friend was nerdy like me, but she was better at making friends and going along with whatever the group wanted to do. When she went to university, she eventually ended up renting a floor of a house with other students. She didn't drink, but she still seemed to enjoy hosting weird themed drinking parties. When her friend group wanted to go to a club, she went with them. It was a very cold night in a very snowy Canadian city. She and her friends waited in line, outside, in the blustery winter, for an absurdly long time. The guy behind her in line--a stranger--looked her in the eye and recited the lyrics to this song in absolute earnest. That was his come-on line, apparently. I wonder if it ever worked on anyone. You know what? I don't really feel like I missed out on anything, not going to clubs and all. I feel icky posting this song, and I never had it recited it to me by some guy on the street. If you'

When I was sick, I had some really weird dreams. Even now that I'm recovering, I'm having some really weird dreams. I dreamed there were insects burrowing into my skin. That freaked me out so much I woke up and checked to make sure it wasn't really happening. (It wasn't.) My last dream before being woken up by a contractor drilling in another apartment and a crew of leaf-blower people out front was strange in that I wasn't myself. I caught a glimpse of myself in a mirror and I was pencil-thin, blonde, young, and wearing little else but lingerie. Not me. There was a girl in my dream who I guess was my friend. She was in a tizzy because she'd gotten her period for the first time. "Actually," she said, "I got it once years ago, but never again after that. And then I got it again today!" I asked her how old she was. She said, "Seventeen. Well, almost seventeen." So was I a teenager too? Seemed so. The strangest thing, to me, was that I

I almost missed posting today. Would have been the first time ever. I have been SO SICK over the past few days. Couldn't get out of bed. Couldn't even sit up in bed. Couldn't do anything but hold myself in fetal position and hope to feel better soon.  Nothing serious, just the type of thing that makes you completely unable to exist in the world for a little while.  But I'm back and I'm bringing you Good Vibrations.  You didn't even have time to miss me! #SongoftheDay You Spin Me Round (Dead or Alive)

This song came up on Youtube while I was distracting myself with Divine videos. It works. As a distraction, I mean. My partner is on the phone with his brother, and I need loud music to drown that out. He doesn't enjoy talking to his brother.  But who am I to talk? I only call my brother when I need help with my computer.  God help me, I've had this song in my head for days. I know where it came from: on Twitter, I saw someone talking about these whiskey pods? They're like Tide Pods, but full of whiskey. The person who posted the picture of these things started their tweet with, "You take a whiskey drink..." so obviously this song weaselled its way into my brain. Now I can't get it out. I don't know the words, but that hasn't stopped me from singing it around the house. Just ask my partner. Ask him how annoying it is when I sing songs I don't know the words to. Go ahead. Ask. I can't believe this has never been our song of the day. I love it. It's on my playlist of 70s music I listen to when I'm super-bummed. And I'm listening to it now, so I must be super-bummed.  When I listen to tracks like this, tracks from my youth, tracks that hit me square in the nostalgia centre, sometimes I find myself thinking: this song isn't very good. But the goodness or not-goodness of it doesn't really matter. The punch of nostalgia is what matters. On the rare occasions when I hear today's popular music, I often find myself thinking: this isn't very good. But, of course, that doesn't matter to the kids who like it today. And it probably won't matter to them when they're adults hearing the songs of their younger years on an oldies station (if radio continues to exist, and I hope it will!) because today's popular songs will hit them square in the nostalgia centre and they will be transported. Music really is something, don't you think?  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. My partner visited his sister last week, so I camped out at his apartment.  He has cable. I had no idea you could still watch old episodes of The Simpsons in syndication, but that's what I've been doing. I watched the episode where Homer becomes a hippy. Haven't seen it in years. Decades? I always associate "Uptown Girl" with that one, but I noticed Yo La Tengo in the credits because they did the closing theme. I just watched an episode of Murder She Wrote that had Robert Goulet in it. Not for long, though. I won't spoiler the episode for you, even if it is from the 80s (and I'm pretty sure it is), by stating or not stating that his character is or is not a murder victim.  A few familiar face here. I just heard this song on a commercial (although it was the original version, not this cover) and it reminded me of that Ally McBeal soundtrack I've talked about before. #SongoftheDay Reach Out I'll Be There (Four Tops)

Image
My partner gets really bad cramps that wake him out of sleep sometimes. When he wakes up, I wake up--because he screams. All the neighbours in our building probably wake up too.   Last night, when my partner woke with a cramp, he jumped out of bed, screaming, and immediately grabbed my hand. He'd never done that before. His bedroom is extremely dark at night. I can see almost nothing. And yet my partner didn't swipe around the bed searching for my hand. He reached across the bed and found my hand instantly. When I asked him the next morning how he'd done that, he said he just knew where my hand was. I cried when he squeezed my hand, not because he was hurting me, but because I was so deeply touched that he sought my help in that way. My partner is the kind of person who always wants to solve his own problems. I ask him if I can help with whatever issue he's having, and he says no, he'll handle it himself. I understand. I'm the same way. That's why it touche

#SongoftheDay All My Favorite Songs (Weezer)

Image
I've been creating these Youtube videos of me playing Solitaire . In the one I made today, I mentioned having this song in my head. At the time I thought it was Beck, but it's not. It's Weezer. This is one of those songs I really don't want to like. If Emo can be schmaltzy, this is that. And that goes triple for the video, although I think the video is adorable and I feel it much harder than a person in their 40s ought. I want my mood to be better than it is. Things are bad right now. My partner and I are supporting each other through some very difficult times. I said to him today, "Life feels like a bad dream." He said, "I keep wondering when I'm going to wake up." At least we're going through it together. I could have sworn I'd posted this song already, but apparently not. #SongoftheDay Down by the Water (PJ Harvey)

The other day I was on the phone with my mother and she kept telling me all these things, like it's good I haven't given up the lease on my apartment because my partner is probably going to leave me. Stuff like that. While she's telling me these things, it all seems so... reasonable. Of course my partner's going to leave me. Why has he even stayed with me this long? He'll leave when he gets bored of the sex. That's what my mother told me.  And we never talk about sex. The amazing thing is that I now realize my mother's been poisoning my mind this way all my life. It's just taken me 40 years to see what's going on.  I don't think she says these things with malefic intentions. I don't think she's even trying to be mean. I get the sense she just wants to prepare me for all these bad things she's sure are going to happen to me. Later in that same conversation, I mentioned that I haven't been a good supportive listener for my partner

#SongoftheDay Is That All There Is (Barbara McNair)

I'm having one of those "Is that all there is?" days. They kind of suck. Nothing is fully satisfying even though, on paper, life should be wonderful. I'm usually a person who is brimming with gratitude, but not today. I chose this cover because my partner's father had a bit of a crush on Barbara McNair back in the day. btw those 1970 lapels remind me of a shiny green shirt that was at one time my mother's. #SongoftheDay Paint it, Black (The Rolling Stones)

My partner watched a lot of women's gymnastics during the Olympics (I don't know whether they'll still be going on when this post goes up), and during one routine there was a familiar song playing but without lyrics. My partner kept saying "Paint it black," and I was looking around the room like, "What?"  I thought he was giving me instructions or something. #SongoftheDay Walking On Sunshine (Katrina & The Waves)

My partner just invited me to go for a walk. Which is uncanny, because all morning I've been thinking about inviting him to go for a walk. I held off because I have tons of work to do.  That's all I've been doing for days: working, working, working, never leaving the house. He's noticed.  Just like I've noticed that the stressors in his life are getting him down.  Way down.   I want to cheer him up. He's a physically active person. I'm not, but I know that exercise is good for my mental health, not to mention my body. We both want to help each other, and we both thought up the same way to help the other. That's cute. I like it. #SongoftheDay Schubert's Die Forelle/The Trout (Grace Bumbry)

Image
This post is MONTHS in the making. Finally--finally!--it's here. You see, my partner is lucky enough to have a washing machine in his apartment. He's got those stacking kind that are small and go in a closet. The dryer is pretty old, but the washer is new and very cool. When it's done washing your clothes, it sings a song at you. It sings THIS song at you! Every time I heard it, I thought, "That's Mozart, right?  Yeah, that sounds like Mozart."  I wanted to share this story with you, so I spent hours scouring Youtube for the Mozart aria this little tune was drawn from. Because I was sure it was Mozart. One hundred percent certain. The other night we were listening to the radio during dinner, and the classical host talked about her composer of the week: Franz Schubert. Then she played this lieder: The Trout. I nearly jumped out of my chair. "This is the song our washing machine sings!" I told my partner. He had no idea what I was talking about. He

#SongoftheDay The Maid on the Shore (Stan Rogers)

I've mentioned before that I'm kind of obsessed with a show called Mayday. It's about plane crashes, in case you've never seen it. The episode I just watched told the story of the plane crash that killed this Canadian folk musician, Stan Rogers. I didn't recognize the name, so I looked him up on Youtube.
