#SongoftheDay Walking With A Ghost (Tegan and Sara)

Image
I mentioned yesterday that I like ghosts, and this song is called Walking With A Ghost.  That's really all I've got.  Enjoy some Tegan and Sara! If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. Tell anyone you know--particularly people who are isolated and enjoy music. Readers of adult fiction can also buy my books or check them out from your local library. Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely! #SongoftheDay Supernatural (Ruby Waters)

Ruby Waters is a Métis musician and I just love timbre of her voice, don't you? Every time I hear this song on the radio, my ears perk up. Because I like ghosts and the song is called Supernatural. And because I like the song. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours (Stevie Wonder)

My partner and I usually listen to a classical music radio station while we eat dinner--he calls it "the old people station," and the ads they play only reinforce his point.  But, hey, we're old people. Well, he is.  I'm an old person in training--in spirit, certainly. There are two categories of ads that catch my attention, especially: commercials for erectile dysfunction treatments, and commercials for engagement rings. We don't react to the ED ads. We openly discuss our aging bodies. No discomfort there. The engagement ring commercials, on the other hand... When those ones come on, it's crickets.  Silence.  Because, at this stage, I want to get married and my partner doesn't. He's been married before and the experience soured him on the entire institution. I'm not a romantic. Strangely, the reasons I have for wanting to marry him are remarkably institutional. He is older than I am. At some point, I will likely be faced with legal decisions, heal

#SongoftheDay Here's That Rainy Day (Wes Montgomery)

I was raised to be frugal, and it worked. All my life, I've been frugal beyond frugal--you could call me "cheap," even.  It would be true. I was taught to save for a rainy day, and that's what I've always done.  My annual earnings are low (consistently well below the poverty line) to the point that my tax accountant thinks I'm hiding something from him.  I'm not. But he gives me deep discounts because he says I can't afford him. He's right.   At least I can claim his services... on my taxes. But I didn't come here to talk about taxes.  I came here to talk about rainy days. When I started saving, I thought I would one day buy a house. Well, now I'm middle-aged and there are parking spots in Toronto I still couldn't afford. I realized long ago that my savings were there for that day when everything fell apart. Then Covid struck, and I realized the rainy day was here--only, it wasn't my rainy day.  I'm one of the lucky ones. I alr

#SongoftheDay Letting Go (Straight Lines)

I mentioned the other day that there were more sad posts to come.  Well, here we go. One of my cats has been very sick and I had to have him put down the other day.   Can't get much sadder than that. My partner drove me to the vet's office. As soon as we got in the car, this song came on the radio. And it wasn't the start of the song. The moment my partner started up the car, the radio sang: "The hardest part of love is letting go." Sometimes life is just... like, you can't make this stuff up is what I'm saying. #SongoftheDay Antonín Dvořák's New World Symphony Op. 95 - Largo (London Symphony)

Image
Many of us know this tune as Goin' Home, a.k.a. the song that makes me cry every time I hear it. This tune always reminds of the scene from one of my favourite movies, the 1948 feature The Snake Pit. I can't tell you how many times I've seen that movie.  A couple years ago, when I was seriously struggling with my mental health, I would just watch over and over again. The movie would end and I'd restart it immediately. The main character in the film is institutionalized, and she's struggling to figure out why. At one point in the movie, there's a dance. The band plays this song and all of the patients at the psychiatric hospital join in singing along. It is an incredibly poignant scene, but I couldn't articulate why until I actually listened to the DVD commentary, where a film expert made the point that most of those patients would never be going home. They would live out their days in that hospital. As I say, every time I hear this melody, I cry. If you'

We've had some bummer posts lately, and there will be more, but this isn't one of them. We all need a break from the sad once in a while, so let's laugh at mondegreens, shall we? The other day, my partner told me that the words to this song are "Wrapped up like a douche."  I was like ummm I think you ought to check with the internet about that. So he played this video and said, "See?  Wrapped up like a douche." Yeah, okay, it sounds sort of like that, but LOOK UP THE LYRICS PLEASE. He did, and the words are actually "Revved up like a deuce."  Not "Wrapped up like a douche." #SongoftheDay Everybody Hurts (R.E.M.)

My partner finished reading The Hours today and he's been staring out the window with tears in his eyes for the past twenty minutes.   "I shouldn't have read that," he told me.   It's been a challenging week for us both, but we've turned to each other for support. That's something, at least. I wedged myself beside him in his chair and hugged him tight, because I heard somewhere that holding someone tightly around the midsection calms them down.  It worked okay, I think. #SongoftheDay Permanent Maniac (GRAE)

I just heard this song on the radio and it grabbed me, so we're listening to it today. Evokes all the feels of being a teenager in love--which, in my experience, is the best and worst and everything of emotion and mood in life.  Ahh, to be young again... Mind you, as I've mentioned before, perimenopause can feel a lot like puberty in terms of the emotional extremes.  It's just much, much sadder.  ymmv If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Say It Ain't So (Weezer)

I had to call a customer service number the other day, and when they put me on hold, THIS SONG was playing while I waited.  It was an instrumental version, so it took me a couple minutes to identify. I was sitting there going, "I know this song. What is this song?"  Best hold music ever. This song always makes me think of a time I was picking up food from a Chinese restaurant down the street. In their fridge, alongside their cans of pop and other drinks, they had these little stubby bottles of Molson Canadian. I hadn't seen these bottles since I was a child, and they brought on a flood of traumatic memories of growing up with an abusive alcoholic parent.  I was just standing there, staring, waiting for my food and trying so hard not to collapse, because that's what my body wanted to do: faint.  But I didn't faint. I lived to tell the story.  Triggers are like that.  They hit you out of nowhere, sometimes. But you will survive, my treasure. You have such value in

#SongoftheDay When Doves Cry (Prince)

I'm listening to a radio host talking about how Blue Monday is not a real thing and was invented by travel companies to sell beach vacations. Oh, I should mention that I schedule these posts in advance, so it is Blue Monday as I write these words. All weekend, I heard similar reports on the TV news: Blue Monday is coming up, but it's not real! As it turns out, I am blue today. And not just because of the chronic depression! I got some terrible news and it made me sad.  So I called my partner, and he was already crying! Because he'd just received terrible news that had nothing to do with my terrible news. So we're both sad. We're both crying. But it's got nothing to do with Blue Monday, because Blue Monday isn't a real thing. #SongoftheDay Stacy's Mom (Fountains of Wayne)

Image
This song is on the radio right now, and I can't believe it's never been a Song of the Day. Many years ago, I wrote a book called STACY'S DAD HAS GOT IT GOING ON, so I have a great deal of affection for this tune.  Also, I've decided I am now a MILF--not quite at the level of Stacy's Mom, but I do the best with what I've got.  My partner finds that term MILF offensive and doesn't understand how anyone could proudly adopt it, but my partner's never been perimenopausal, so... #SongoftheDay Hotel Yorba (White Stripes)

Image
My partner was playing and Ian and Sylvia record the other night and he asked me, "Did I ever play National Hotel for you?" I told him that yes, he had, and I'd made it a song of the day and also it reminds me of Hotel Yorba. He didn't know the tune, so I sang it in the most unmelodic way you can imagine. There are times when my partner just sort of stares at me, and this was one of those times. #SongoftheDay I Don't Want to Set the World On Fire (The Ink Spots)

Image
Every time I tell this story, I expect people to laugh. In my mind, it's a funny story. Everybody else reacts like I must be traumatized by the event. But I'm not! Much worse things than this have happened in my life.  So! It was sometime in the 90s--1993, let's say--and I was making dinner for my family. I had a pot of water boiling on the stove, but I hadn't grabbed the pasta out of the cupboard yet. Spaghetti was kept in that really high cupboard over the stove, and I've always been super short, so I had to stand on my tippy-toes to reach. Remember, this was the 90s: a time when many of us wore oversized T-shirts tucked into our loose-fitting black jeans and then pulled out a touch so they were baggy at the front. When I reached up to grab the pasta, my T-shirt landed on the burner. Suddenly, I was on fire. This is the part of the story where people are like "Oh my God! You poor thing!" I guess it was memorable, since I remember it (unlike so many othe

#SongoftheDay Love To Love You Baby (Donna Summer)

Image
Just taking a break from darning socks and watching the "I Accuse My Parents" episode of MST3K to listen to this sixteen-minute disco track. I might have mentioned this before, but I currently have a love of repetition that reminds me of my baby sister when she was a little kid. She would watch her Lion King video over and over and over.  Anything she liked, she'd watch on repeat.  She'd get to the end of the movie, rewind it and play it again. At the time, I didn't understand it. Now I do. It's really soothing to watch the same thing over and over. I'll put in one of my Frasier DVDs and watch the same six episodes all week long. I've probably watched "I Accuse My Parents" eight times in the past two weeks. I've already watched it once today, and I'm watching it again now. There's a lot to be said for predictability, when the world at large feels so unstable.  When you've already seen a sitcom from the 90s forty or fifty times

#SongoftheDay Third Eye (Florence + the Machine)

Image
I'm trying to proofread a short story, but I have zero attention span at the moment. Florence's album "How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful" is playing on the CD player I rigged up out of a fake Sony Discman and some old computer speakers I inherited from the office I worked in circa 2005--and they weren't new then.  It's not a bad set-up. The music sounds great. Some music always sounds great. I remember waiting to check in at Hampton Inn in Niagara Falls (it doesn't exist anymore) and the person at the desk was ridiculously surly to the sweet young couple ahead of me, and taking way too long to do everything, but I was on Cloud 9 because Dog Days Are Over was playing on the speakers.  I still regret not going to the last concert Florence gave here in Toronto. I'm always hesitant to spend money, even when I know it'll be more than worth it. Now we're deep in the heart of covid and there are no concerts.  On the flip side, I can't help remember

#SongoftheDay Good Old Days (Theme from The Little Rascals)

Image
We were doing a crossword puzzle the other day and one of the clues asked for the girl's name on The Little Rascals.  Right away, I wrote in Darla.  My partner just kind of stared at me. I'm actually terrible with trivia and I have the world's worst memory, so it's rare for me to come up with answers so fast.  As we went along solving the puzzle, we had trouble with some the intersecting words. My partner was like, "Are we sure Darla is right?"  Yes. Yes, we are.  My baby sister was in love with the Little Rascals movie that was made in the 90s. She had it on VHS. I wouldn't have said I remembered anything about the movie, even though I've probably seen it dozens of times, but I guess I remember Darla's name. #SongoftheDay Can I Borrow a Feeling? (Kirk Van Houten)

Image
One of my absolute favourite Simpsons episodes is called A Milhouse Divided.  It's the episode where Milhouse's parents get a divorce. I'm watching it right now, trying to figure out why I love it so much. Maybe I love it because my parents got divorced when I was just a tad older than Milhouse.  Kirk is a sadly familiar figure. My father lived in motels and rooming houses, but that was mostly because of his poor life choices.  When he was fired by his employer for theft, he vowed never to work again--and, true to his word, he never did. He actually tried to get alimony out of my mother, who was raising four kids on a secretary's salary. With zero child support, obviously. I think one thing that always drew me to The Simpsons was the feeling of recognition in all that dysfunction. My household was not a funny one to grow up in, but if you made us into cartoon characters, maybe other people would laugh.  Maybe.  I can understand why REAL adults (ie. people who are older

#SongoftheDay Soul & Inspiration (The Righteous Brothers)

Last year I told you the story of coming home from a concert on New Year's Eve and my partner dancing me around the apartment to Unchained Melody. This year we had to stay home, obviously. Everyone did. I wanted to do something special for my partner, so I decided to make him his favourite food: brie en croute with cranberries.  Remember when baked brie was super popular 10 or 20 years ago and you could buy a frozen one at the supermarket? Well, you can't anymore. I tried. So I had to take a chance and make this thing myself. I have never worked with puff pastry. I've seen it done on the Best British Baking Competition Show Or Whatever It's Called I'm Too Lazy To Google It But Not Too Lazy To Type All These Words. Those are good bakers, on that show, and even they have trouble with puff pastry, so I knew I wouldn't be starting from scratch. Fortunately, you can now buy sheets of frozen puff pastry at the supermarket. Also fortunately, I had two gift cards to spe

#SongoftheDay Always Have What We Had (William Prince)

I could live inside William Prince's voice, couldn't you? New Year's Eve, my partner wanted to stay up until midnight so we could go outside and look at the CN Tower, which was supposed to be doing something interesting--a light show, I guess.  By 11p.m. I was face-down on the couch, barely floating about the level of consciousness. My partner put on the CBC's New Year's Eve countdown, and William Prince came on. His voice encouraged me to stay awake for the next hour (with the aid of tea and chocolate). At midnight, we left the house and looked around. People were setting off fireworks in every direction. A woman was on her cell phone, asking whoever she was talking to, "You're drunk and alone?!?" Probably there were a lot of drunk and alone people in the world, this New Year's Eve. I would have been content going to bed at ten, but I am middle aged. ymmv If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, t

#SongoftheDay Somewhere in Dreamland (1936 Cartoon)

Image
Last week I described to my partner a cartoon I had on VHS, as a kid. I figured it must have been from the Depression era, and I told him about it in detail. I watched this cartoon A LOT when I was a kid. I've been looking for it online for years and was never able to find it. My partner found it on YouTube within, oh, eight seconds? Even though I didn't know what it was called. We watched it together, and waves of nostalgia washed over me. Somewhere in Dreamland is, in fact, from the thirties.  The video I had was in black and white, so this was my first time seeing it in colour.  The song came back to me as soon as I heard it. I kept saying to my partner, "I wonder why I watched this cartoon so much. There were so many other cartoons on TV." Maybe I liked it because I was malnourished, as a child. Not as bad as the kids in this cartoon, but I must have been able to relate.  I know that's a bummer. Sorry. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing

Our trek through the late 90s wouldn't be complete without this track, also introduced to me by a gay couple I was friends with back then.  If you weren't around in those days, swing music and dance saw a resurgence in popularity. It was even in commercials for The Gap, which was the very height of cool, at the time. (I'm joking. Or maybe I'm not. I had a lot of friends who worked and/or shopped at The Gap. Happy New Year! This song was introduced to me by the same couple I mentioned in yesterday's post.
