#SongoftheDay THATS WHAT I WANT (Lil Nas X)

I'm not going to talk over this track. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. Tell anyone you know--particularly people who are isolated and enjoy music. Readers of adult fiction can also buy my books or check them out from your local library. Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely! I'm also an  Amazon Influencer,  so hopefully I can make a little pocket change when you buy stuff by clicking through  my affiliate links . But you don't HAVE to do any of that. I'm very happy to get a daily visit from you, so just keep coming back. Oh, and I also recommend hitting the "Subscribe" button at the top of the page so you won't miss a song! See you tomorrow! #SongoftheDay Wake Me Up When September Ends (Green Day)

A family friend I've known all my life died last week of suicide. I was just sharing funny stories about him with my partner, but I'm sure you'll understand if I choose to keep those stories private at this time. I still wanted to acknowledge his passing, as well as and the pain he lived with and the joy he brought into people's lives. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Big Red Commercial

Yesterday we watched some Juicy Fruit commercials, but I think Big Red probably had the best jingle. I still like it. #SongoftheDay Juicy Fruit Commercials

Image
I have no idea why this Juicy Fruit jingle is stuck in my head today. I never liked Juicy Fruit (the minty ones like it were okay--Doublemint and whatever that other one was) but I do remember the little packets being right by my cash register when I worked my first cashier job. They cost thirty-three cents, as I recall. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Disco Inferno (The Trammps)

My partner, bless his heart, is in the next room talking to himself while he reviews bank statements or something. Poor guy. He doesn't seem like he's having a great time in there. Anyway, I don't feel like listening to his self-talk, so I'm listening to disco instead. I'm currently proofreading the next book in my Lesbian Diaries series. It's dark. Supernatural. There's a succubus. I need a break from heavy material. That's why I'm listening to this classic mood-enhancer!  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida (Iron Butterfly)

Image
At the moment, I'm watching the Bart Sells His Soul episode of The Simpsons on DVD. This episodes opens with Bart tricking his church congregation into singing In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida as "In the Garden of Eden by I Ron Butterfly." I remember watching this episode when it was first broadcast and going into high school the next day to talk about it with my best guy friend. I remember him snobbily asking me, "You know that song is actually called In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, right?" and I was like, "Yeah, of course I knew that," but I don't think I did. #SongoftheDay Crybaby :*( (Dijon)

Image
I messed up my shoulder falling off a child's swing set.  Sadly, my partner encourages my childish behaviour, which sometimes results in injury. This time, I got on a swing and he immediately started pushing me. Turns out the swing set wasn't cemented into the ground, so when I swung back in my partner's direction the front feet lifted. I panicked and tried to get down, but I was too high above the ground and I was also still clinging to the chains. I slid downward while my arms stayed up, cranking my shoulder and leaving me with a sturdy ache. Guess my body's too old to act like a kid.   If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Caribbean Queen (Billy Ocean)

Image
This is one of those songs that transports me back to the 80s. I don't have any specific memories that go along with it, but the track brings up a very specific 80s feeling for me: dark in a good way, like the knowledge that there's so much to know about the world and I don't know it yet. When I was a kid, I used to get stomachaches thinking about the universe. Outer space. Planets and galaxies. My father had told me that space was infinite, and I tried to wrap my head around that idea, but I just couldn't do it. How could anything be so big that it has no limits? Where does it end if it never ends? Those are the sort of thoughts that go along with this song, for me.  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. Tell anyone you know--particularly people who are isolated and enjoy music. Readers of adult fiction can also buy my books or check them out from y

#SongoftheDay Wake Up in the Morning Rice Krispies Jingle (The Rolling Stones)

Image
So apparently The Rolling Stones wrote this Rice Krispies jingle? I came across it when I was looking for that commercial from maybe the 80s or 90s where the dad makes Rice Krispie squares and it's so easy, but he dusts flour all over himself to make it look like it was an overwhelming experience. Remember that? Nobody else seems to, and I couldn't find it on Youtube. Maybe I made it up.  Anyway, I had leftover marshmallows from our cottage trip, so I made a batch of Rice Krispie squares today. I was hoping they'd turn out big and burly and HARD, but instead they're soft and gooey and chewy. I'll still probably eat the whole tray, which is a little worrying since they contain 40 marshmallows. That's a lot of marshmallows to eat in one day. #SongoftheDay Lithium (Nirvana)

Image
I was in the car with my partner, browsing radio stations while we were stuck in traffic on the Don Valley, when this song came on a station I'd never heard of. I contentedly stopped searching and sat back, nodding my head to the music. Grunge is the reason I don't know how to dance. All I know how to do is nod. Before long, my partner commented that this song is very repetitive... which is true, I guess, but seeing as the early 90s was a formative time for me, Nirvana is pure nostalgia. I can't listen to it objectively. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Buffalo Stance (Neneh Cherry)

Image
This song has been in my head, off and on, for weeks. I finally looked up two things:  a) Which TV show used it as theme music?  Jamie's 15 Minute Meals.  b) What is a Buffalo Stance, anyway? I'm not quoting the answer I found, because I looked it up last week, but I seem to recall reading a snippet from an interview with Neneh Cherry stating that it refers to the attitude you need to take in order to survive inner city life. Years ago, I wrote an extensive blog post on this topic. I grew up in a neighbourhood known for its gang activity, and the more time I spend away from that place the less I like going back. My mom still lives there. Years ago I visited her weekly. Then it was monthly. Now it's... well, I could blame the pandemic for keeping me away, but that might be a convenient excuse. When I wrote previously (on a different blog) about who I need to be to return to my old neighbourhood, I talked about putting on another face to take the bus to my mom's house. I

#SongoftheDay You Are The Blood (Sufjan Stevens)

I've been watching a true crime series that's not very good, but somehow still satisfying? Can't explain it, but maybe you understand. Anyway, the background music in one episode reminded me of this track, which I haven't heard in years. They used to play it often on a CBC radio program I listened to daily.  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay All I Wanna Do (Sheryl Crow)

Image
Last night my partner told me he's had two songs stuck in his head for the past two weeks: that awful Kars for Kids jingle and this track. I've played a few annoying songs for you, but you have my solemn promise that I will never play that Kars for Kids monstrosity. Every time that commercial comes on TV, I put it on mute. Sometimes I turn off the TV altogether. I can't stand it. Reminds me of the Minipops, only a thousand times worse. #SongoftheDay Let The Music Play (Shannon)

Image
One thing I've noticed about playing 80s music around people who were not young in the 80s is that they are, for the most part, utterly confounded. They don't understand that, for those of us who were young in the 80s, this sound has infused our bodies and minds. It's inside us. We can't explain why we love it--at least, I can't--but we do love it and that's not going to stop. #SongoftheDay From New York To LA (Patsy Gallant)

Image
As much as I love disco, I actually can't stand this song. It came on the radio the other day and I was saying to my partner, "Why does this song remind me of childhood? But just the melody, not the words." He had no idea. It bugged me so much I looked it up. Turns out the melody is lifted from a québécois tune I consider traditional, although it was written in the 60s so it really hasn't been around that long, called Mon Pays. I don't know how I'd never realized that. Mon Pays is a song we sang in school. That's why I associated it with childhood. I'll play that one tomorrow. Today we have disco. #SongoftheDay Love Is All Around (Sonny Curtis)

Yesterday, when I mentioned what a difference a decade makes, it brought to mind two TV shows: The Dick Van Dyke Show and The Mary Tyler Moore Show.  If I'm not mistaken, DVD premiered in 1961 and MTM in 1970. I watched those two series in their entirety maybe 5 years ago, so I could compare and contrast with the two shows fresh in my mind.  The first big difference is that DVD was broadcast in black and white, where as MTM aired in colour. The Dick Van Dyke Show holds up well and it's still really funny to a contemporary audience (or, at least to me... I'm partial to Morey and Rose Marie) but there's a lot of that 1960s patriarchy/hegemony/other words I learned in university in there. Even though Rose Marie is a single (successful!) working woman, her character is still obsessive about finding a man. Mary Richards, MTM's character on The Mary Tyler Moore show, seems to have a lot more freedom. If we fast-forward to the 80s and compare her to a character like Murphy

#SongoftheDay Soak Up The Sun (Sheryl Crow)

Image
You know how before you go on vacation you have to do a ton of work that you would normally do the week you'd be away, but instead you have to do it all in advance so it's actually really stressful? Do you think that makes us small business owners appreciate our time off even more? I don't. Because I know I'll still be working even while I'm away. Anyway, despite my terrible tooth pain, I'm scheduling a bunch of posts today so it's done for next week, when I'll be away.  Oh good. Someone's drilling something and it's echoing through my apartment building like a giant mosquito. I am looking forward to a break from city noise. God, is that an annoying sound. Like, for real. I can't wait to get away from this shit, because it's constant. Back to work: when I think of road trip music, this is the first song that comes to mind.  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can

#SongoftheDay Smetana's Vltava (Vienna Philharmonic, Bobby McFerrin conductor)

Image
Better known (by me, at least) as The Moldau, this piece is one of my absolute favourites. Has been since I was a teen. Another thing that happened when I was a teen is: my wisdom teeth started growing in. And you know what? They're still at it. I never had them removed and now I'm too scared and also it costs money. The money piece is more of an excuse, at this stage. I haven't been to the dentist in 15 years. My last experience with a new dentist left me with permanent pain. So I haven't been back. Now I'm in my forties and I've still got these damn wisdom teeth to deal with. It's not every day. I could not cope with 20+ years of this pain, because it is honestly brutal. Every few years one of these teeth starts thrusting itself through my gums, wreaking havok in my head. I'm in a lot of pain right now is basically what I'm saying. I tried to distract myself yesterday by calling my sister, but as she was talking all that was going through my m

#SongoftheDay Walkin' on the Sun (Smash Mouth)

Image
I've had this song stuck in my head since I put together a playlist of upbeat 90s songs. It's been enough of a crutch to keep me out of the deep depression trying to suck me down.  I haven't been writing lately, and I think that's a problem.  In case I haven't mentioned it recently, I'm a writer. That's my job/business/career.  I write books. I also narrate audiobooks. There are many tasks I do to run this business that are not writing.  Lately, I've been focused on publishing, editing and proofreading, compiling anthologies, graphic design, audio formatting, stuff like that. It's not uncreative work, but it's not the same as writing a book. So today I forced myself to start writing a book.  I've only done about 700 words so far, but meeting these characters and planning their lives is giving me a lift.  Early in my career, I always used to say that I wrote to pay the bills, pure and simple.  I said that writing meant nothing to me, I could t

#SongoftheDay Forget About Life (Alvvays)

Image
If I'm not mistaken, this is the final track from Alvvays' "Antisocialites" album. It's been in my head a lot, lately. Life is really hard right now--for my partner, and for me by extension. I've been craving the kind of night (or day, whatever) in this song: where you forget all your troubles with someone you care about. I want to forget all the present-day shit that's weighing on my mind. I want to forget all the decades-old trauma that creeps up from the sludge.  I want to forget about life, just for a little while. I want to come back at it refreshed and ready. #SongoftheDay Push It (Salt-N-Pepa)

Image
I've lived in a high-rise for so many years that I stopped trying to be quiet in bed. The walls at my place are so thick you really can't hear other people's sex noises through them. You need to be out in the hallway--then you can hear sex through people's doors, if they're having it, and they're being loud. My partner's place is a different story. His apartment is part of an old house. You can hear everything through the walls. What makes it worse is that we know all our neighbours in his building. We're friendly with everyone. They're all nice people. Most are single and elderly. For a solid week, all of our neighbours were away visiting family. We had the whole building to ourselves. We could have had the loudest sex you could ever imagine. Except I got food poisoning. And then I went to my apartment. And then my partner had a night of bad intestinal cramping. But finally we had sex. Finally!  One night only of shout-it-from-the-rooftops orgasms.

#SongoftheDay Everybody Everybody (Black Box)

Image
This track from 1990 is like comfort food for my ears. And, boy, do I need it today. My partner is on the phone with his brother. I've mentioned before that he doesn't like talking to his brother (he says his brother doesn't listen to him, just drones on endlessly about stuff nobody could possibly be interested in), so I retreat to my nostalgic music. That way I don't have to overhear the growling in the other room. Interestingly, when I grabbed this video from Youtube, the following was posted beneath it: NOTE: The Lady in the video is not the actual Singer, she is lip-syncing If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Steal My Sunshine (Len)

Image
Yesterday we listened to Andrea True Connection's track "More, More, More" and I mentioned that it was sampled in a song from the late 90s. This is the song. Did you guess right? I know I say this about every decade, but man did we wear some ugly clothes back then. I forget what the style was called, when we wore tight tops and baggy pants and hair all twisted up like that, but that was not attractive, in retrospect. I absolutely wore stuff like that, but it was bad. The only style I subscribed to that I maintain any respect for is grunge. In 1992/3/4 I wore black jeans and oversized plaid shirts over long-sleeved t-shirts. If I had to go back to a style of clothing I wore when I when I was younger, I guess I'd go back to that. I think the teens of today have got the right idea, with their track pants and comfy clothes. I can get on board with comfy. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do
