#SongoftheDay Mood (24kGoldn ft. Iann Dior)

Image
This song hit me at the perfect moment, the other day. That happens, sometimes. My partner and I were both in the living room.  He was on chat with a rep trying to resolve a problem he was having with a piece of tech.  Now, my partner is a gentle man, especially where I'm concerned, but when he has tech problems, he gets pissed.  I used to help him troubleshoot, but I won't anymore.  It's not that he gets mad at me.  He just gets angry at his computer or printer or whatever's causing the problem, and I can't handle it. It's only within the past year that I've realized (thanks to lots of therapy) that I've got some significant childhood PTSD shit going on.  One thing I've learned about this type of PTSD is that you'll often have emotional flashbacks.  So, it's not like remembering a specific event when you were unsafe due to a violent parent, for example--it's more like being triggered by something in your environment, and something inside

#SongoftheDay Theme from To The Manor Born

Image
The Chuck Mangione track we listened to yesterday always makes me think of this theme song. I remember watching To The Manor Born in the 80s and thinking it was boring and really just not getting it, because I didn't know enough about the class structure in England.  When I rewatched the series as an adult, I thought it was hilarious. #SongoftheDay Feels So Good (Chuck Mangione)

I can't remember why we were talking about this song the other week, but my partner immediately got out his Chuck Magione LP and played this little gem of the 70s. He's been whistling it around the house every day since. And I don't hate him for it. Always reminds me of King of the Hill. #SongoftheDay Teenage Dirtbag (Avenue 22)

Image
I could have sworn we'd listened to the Wheatus original on this site--that's why I pulled a cover this time--but it turns out Teenage Dirtbag has never been featured here.  Dreadful oversight on my part. I love this song. It's always struck me as lesbionic, which is why I was eager to grab a cover with a female vocalist. Reminds me of High School Confidential, in a lot of ways.  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay I'm So Beautiful (Divine)

Image
Because I am a very boring person and I really enjoyed being alive in the 90s, everything in my life somehow relates back to Frasier. Even this. In one of the Frasier episodes where Roz is pregnant, she shows up to an awards dinner dressed in a silver sequinned dress. When Frasier tells her she looks divine, she says, "No, I look like Divine."  I never appreciated the complete and utter verity of that joke until I saw this music video. Clearly, there were John Waters fans among the Frasier writing staff. #SongoftheDay So Beautiful (Robert Glasper)

My partner and I both struggle with mental health issues. For him, suicidal ideation is a big thing. One time, when he was having a really difficult day, I wrote down a bunch of things I love about him.  It seemed like kind of a hokey thing to do. Everything I'd written was pretty sappy, to the point where I was almost embarrassed to give him the list. But I did, and he propped it up on his desk and I guess I forgot about it. That was over a year ago. Today I went to grab something off his desk, and I noticed that he'd been reading that list again. He's moved his desk from room to room in the year since I handed him that piece of paper, so he's had ample opportunities to get rid of it. But he hasn't. It wasn't difficult for me to think up things I love about my partner. It wasn't hard to write them down. The most challenging thing was getting over my reticence about doing something I thought he might find corny. Now I'm so glad I did it, because I've

Yesterday I mentioned listening to music in my cousin's backyard. Today we've got sunshine once more, and I'm still feeling nostalgic, so here's another track we listened to back in the day. (Murder She Wrote is also, to this day, my mother's favourite show. It's on every weeknight at seven, and she watches it every day on TV. She also owns the entire series on DVD.) #SongoftheDay Poco Man Jam (Gregory Peck)

Weird, when a song you haven't heard in 30 years pops into your head seemingly out of the blue.  I am an introspective type person, so I always try to figure out why I have a certain song in my head.  It took a few days to figure this one out. Last week, my partner and I walked by a big rabbit hutch in a neighbour's yard.  In the back of my head, it must have brought me back to the rabbit hutch in my cousin's yard.  I remember hanging out in her backyard on sunny days like today, listening to her music (mostly reggae and hip-hop), and trying out the dance moves of the day.  Or just talking, or reading, or doing nothing much. This song is way up there on the soundtrack of that time of my life. #SongoftheDay You Cheated Me (Martha Wainwright)

Image
Ever since we featured the theme song from the 80s sitcom "Gimme A Break," I've had this tune in me head. The one merges with the other. I don't know why.  I guess they sound the same to me, somehow. I can't explain it.   "You Cheated Me" is singing and dancing in my brain today because I just finished writing story number 14 in my Wedding Heat series. The story results in some intense cheating-related drama.  In fact, I'm not sure how I'm going to write myself out of it!   The next story in this series needs to be Maggie and Ed's wedding, but the way I've left Wedding Heat: Bachelor Party, I'm not sure how I can convince this couple to say, "I do." #lifeofawriter  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay White Wedding (Billy Idol)

Image
My Wedding Heat series was recently featured on the Radish Fiction app , drawing renewed interest in the stories.   If I'm remembering correctly, I started writing Wedding Heat in 2012, after attending a wedding at a fancy resort.  I didn't stay at the resort, of course.  I shared a motel room off-site with 4 other people. To be honest, I hate it when people have their wedding somewhere fancy and expect their much less affluent guests to pony up for expensive accommodations.   But I hate weddings, generally, so why did I even write this series? I wrote it because there are so many people at weddings (at least, there were before covid), and it's such a charged environment. Emotions run high.  Desperation abounds.  People fall into bed with all kinds of partners they might not normally attach themselves to. At least, that's what happens in my series. Thing is, the most recent story in the Wedding Heat series was published in 2014. Since then, there's been no new We

#SongoftheDay Money --That's What I Want (Barrett Strong)

With Easter on the horizon, I've been browsing the websites of fine chocolatiers and thinking, "Who the hell can afford this stuff?" Not me, that's for sure. But you should see some of this chocolate.  My mouth waters just looking at the pictures.  I want to buy fancy chocolates for my partner and myself, but they cost SO MUCH MONEY. I think a rich person should adopt me and give me chocolate.  Lots and lots of fancy chocolate. That's what I want. Excess hormones suck, but they suck the most on days that are too emotional to begin with. I've got to do something today that's extremely challenging, emotionally. Even if I were a Vulcan, I'd have trouble with today's tasks.  It's a difficult day to begin with, but I've got hormones heaped on top of my difficulties, and they're making everything so much harder.  I just want to go back to bed and cry, but I can't because I have sacrifices to make.   It's a difficult day.  It's a hormone-infused day. I don't usually mention my new books on this blog, but since I'm taking a break from Twitter this Lenten season, I suppose I should try getting the word out in other ways: My latest book in The Lesbian Diaries series is now available from Amazon . It's in the Kindle Unlimited program for the moment, so if you're a KU subscriber that means you can read it for free ! This particular cover of this particular song couldn't be more perfect to accompany the news, as my new book is called Maggie's Diary , and it's about a university student who basically sleeps her way through a school friend's family.  Try keeping that a secret!  Maggie tries. Does she succeed?  Only one way to find out, and that's by reading the book:  https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08XW13QJ9?tag=dondes-20 If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay If James Brown wrote Creep by Radiohead (Scary Pockets)

My mother keeps calling me a "cat lady" and it bugs me. Aside from the part about being called "lady" as a genderqueer person, the implication of "cat lady" is "crazy cat lady."   "Crazy" is one of those things I can say about myself, but I'm not so fond of my mother making the implication.  It's a little too close to home.  I was out buying milk today, and I noticed that wearing a face mask (two, actually) makes me much more inclined to do something I'd always tried not to do in public: talk to myself. With the mask(s) on, I maintained an ongoing dialogue with myself. Lots of people talk to themselves nowadays.  Actually, they're talking to their phones.  So I'm not sure why my talking to myself garners so many funny looks. Maybe it's the fact that I'm obviously not talking on a phone.  I don't know. The people at the store probably don't look at me and think "cat lady."  They probably jus

There are two tarot readers on YouTube whose readings I pretty much never miss. I always find it funny when when their readings for the week or month ahead are basically the same reading.   This happened last week, when one reader was like, "You're happy.  Don't screw it up like you always do! Don't overthink it.  Don't start obsessing about what could go wrong in the future.  You're happy now, so just be happy already!" All of which is great advice, by the way--whether it comes from the cards or the stars or just from other people. I am talented at screwing up a good thing. And I've never been so happy in all my life, so, naturally, I need to ask myself what I'm missing. It's not like I DESERVE to be this happy. Something's got to go wrong and I must be prepared. The other reader gave the same message, but the wording was something like: "You're happy. Don't go messing with a good thing.  Leave it alone!" Ever since then

#SongoftheDay Mr Cellophane (Ben Vereen)

Image
My partner was talking about someone he knows whose name sounds like Ben Vereen, and it made me think of that line from Pinky and the Brain: "Charlie Sheen, Ben Vereen, shrink to the size of a lima bean."  Remember that? No?  Just me? Anyway, I admitted to my partner that I didn't actually know who Ben Vereen was, so he told me, and then he suggested we watch him dance. I chose to feature this number from Chicago (performed with the Muppets) because I've always loved this song. My partner had bought me tickets to see Chicago last year, but then Covid happened and the theatres closed down and the production never happened. The last time I saw Chicago, it was Saul Rubinek (who played Donny on Frasier!) singing this song. I don't think he did any dancing, though... I asked my partner what he's most looking forward to in a post-Covid world. He said going to restaurants and going to the movies.  Not me. I love cooking and eating at home. I've actually patronized restaurants way more during the pandemic just because I want to support local businesses, and then I get to bring my food home and not eat it in a public space full of strangers. As for movies, I'm not very good at watching them. My attention span doesn't often allow me to pay attention to a storyline for 1.5 to 2 hours.  When my partner saw The Irishman at a theatre on my street, he didn't even invite me to come along. He knew there was no way in hell I could sit still for that long.  For the past hour, I've been mired in nostalgia.  Lately, I've been thinking about the fairy tale books I had when I was a child. These books were mostly from the 70s, so I remember the colour schemes as being primarily orange and brown--the colours of the 70s. The thing is, I can't trust my memory. There's a book that exists in my head, but I can't seem to find any evidence of it in the real world. If it weren't for Covid, I would go to my mother's house and dig through her basement. She never throws things away, so if that book existed, she probably still has it. The song we're listening to is a gorgeous setting of a rhyme featured in one of the fairy tale books I had, as a kid.   The Real Mother Goose was originally published in 1916, and the witch on the cover scared me. I guess she was supposed to be Mother Goose, but I saw her as a witch. I also had Dean's Mother Goose Book of Rhymes , as well as Dean's A Book of Fairy Tales , which scare

#SongoftheDay Miss Susie Had A Steamboat Acapella (Landon Stahmer)

I fell down a rabbit hole and it was DEEP. As we ate lunch yesterday, I told my partner about skipping songs and clapping games we played in grade school. I tried singing this one to him, but I kept forgetting lyrics. So I looked it up.  I have tons of work to do, but instead, I did this. Here's the thing: at my school, we sang it as Miss Mary, not Miss Susie.  When I searched YouTube, I found no trace of this tune sung as Miss Mary, but lots of Miss Susie, Miss Polly, Miss Lucy, and others. So there's plenty of variation.  The words in this version are close to the ones we sang in the schoolyard, but not exact. I suspect there is infinite variety, with this one. I've got an adorable story to go with this song, but I'm not going to tell it. The story is sweet and cute. There's nothing about it that would paint anyone in a bad light, but it's a family story and, as such, I don't feel like it's particularly mine to tell.  Weird, because I've told you hundreds of stories about my family.  I'm not sure why I don't feel that it would be right to tell this one. So I'm here today to tell you there's a story that goes along with this song, but I won't be telling the story. As a writer, it can sometimes be hard to know where to draw that line. Most of the stories we tell about ourselves are going to involve other people in some way.  It's somewhat strange that I felt perfectly okay telling you stories about being neglected by my parents when I was a child, and yet I'm keeping this cute little story to myself. All I can say is that it feels right, so I'm doing it. If you're wondering how you

The other day, my partner and I spent the entire evening listening to the radio. Usually we'll watch something on TV, but I was in pain, so I just sprawled on the couch while he read the paper.  No TV, just classical music.  We kept saying we should turn on the TV and watch something, but the radio station kept playing music we wanted to listen to, so we kept listening. Close to ten, Lark Ascending came on. My partner said he'd never heard it, which surprised me. It's one of my favourite pieces. Well worth the wait.  I wonder if you've ever experienced this: you're in a relationship, or even a friendship, and you get interested in something the other person is into, and after a while you start asking yourself if you're genuinely interested in this thing, or if you only like it because they do. That's how I felt about Star Trek, when I was in a relationship with Sweet. Sweet was a hardcore Trekker (not Trekkie!). I watched various Star Treks at her house, while we were dating, because that's all that was ever on.  I watched TNG in the 90s because it was on every day in syndication and I thought Patrick Stewart was hot af. I'm not sure I ever asked myself whether I liked the show, even once I'd seen every episode multiple times.  A few years ago, I started watching Voyager on Netflix. Even then, I couldn't decide whether I liked the show, or whether I was just lonely. Last night, I realized I'd bailed during Season 3, for no reason in particular, and I had that cr

Before Covid hit, I was actively working to moderate my anxiety by doing things like volunteering and leaving the house regularly, even just to go to the library. Well, I haven't done volunteer work since last March. My position evaporated. My local library has been closed for almost a year. I am even more afraid to leave my apartment than I was before, because I don't want to get sick.  I don't want to make my partner sick. When I'm at my partner's place, I'm a little better at going out. The simple difference is that his apartment door opens to outside, whereas mine opens into a high-rise hallway.  I always schedule these posts a few days in advance, so it's actually March first as I write this. I still pay my rent by cheque (because I am Old School, according to my sister who is two years younger than me), and I felt so anxious about leaving my apartment to drop off my cheque that my stomach actually hurt.  I am afraid of everything outside my apartment.

I've been working from home for years, so this is nothing new to me. What is new to me is working from home with another person hanging around. In many ways, I'm still getting used to living with someone. I love my partner to bits, but he's driving me nuts this morning. I'm trying to edit a book, and he's constantly complaining about things on the internet. He can't figure out which emails are spam and what's legit. He needs my help to make an online purchase.  I feel like Tech Mommy. I just want to lock myself in the bathroom and work in peace.  This moment will pass.  My partner is a gem, and I'm lucky to have him in my life, but all I want to do is work and I keep getting interrupted.  The reason we're listening to this delight from the 90s is that I started paraphrasing the lyrics in my head, going: "Oo baby, you're making me crazy. Every time I look around, you're in my face."  All I can think as I watch this video is that the

I finished writing the book I've been working on throughout most of this year, so I'm trying to force myself to feel good.  It's not really working.  It never really does.  The book turned out just the way I wanted it (heavy on sex, light on plot), but I always have trouble feeling accomplished about completing a manuscript. I guess that's because there's always another step. When you write a book, the project is never complete. After you write it, there's editing, proofreading, publishing, and then endless marketing. Marketing forever. That stage legitimately never ends. So even when I publish a book, I never feel like I'm done.  I never am done. There's always work to do. I wish I would let myself celebrate all these different stages of accomplishment, but I've been trying for years and it hasn't worked yet.
