#SongoftheDay Lady Marmalade (Patti LaBelle)

Image
I have a sister who is much younger than me, and the last time we were together she overheard me and my mom talking about marmalade.  Marmalade is one of those foods I found unpleasant when I was younger, and now I love it.  My little sister heard this talk and asked, "Marmalade?  Is this an old-people thing?"  It's bitter and sweet. Yes, I suppose that's an old-people thing. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Care Bears Countdown (Classic Care Bears Theme Song)

Image
I woke up with this song in my head. I think I had a Care Bear stuffed animal, as a kid--the blue one with the rain clouds?  Or was that my sister's?  Or did she have the elephant?  Or did my cousin have the elephant? Recollections are hazy. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Clap for the Wolfman (Guess Who)

Image
Lon Chaney shows up in a number of the crosswords I do with my partner.  We solved a cryptic clue this morning, over breakfast, involving Lon Chaney, so I took the opportunity to tell my partner a bit about the Wolfman movies and Lon Chaney's film career.  By the way, though the Lon Chaney who first comes to mind for many of us is actually Lon Chaney Jr, you'll find that he is sometimes credited as Lon Chaney and other times as Lon Chaney Jr--which would be a little less confusing if his father hadn't also been a well-regarded actor in horror films--named Lon Chaney. He played The Phantom of the Opera in the 20s! I'm well-versed in movie monster trivia.  I have a soft spot for these classic films.  When I was a kid, I had this recurring dream that I was protecting my younger siblings from all these movie monsters--Dracula, Wolfman, the Mummy, etc--and finally I said to them, "I know you can't hurt me.  This is just a dream."  They all shrugged and said, &

#SongoftheDay Whip It (Devo)

Image
Yesterday I used the word "devolution" and was shocked to discover that I'd never posted any Devo on this site. Pretty surprising, considering this is a band I've seen live in concert. I think they wore the hats. I'm pretty sure they did a costume change on stage. Memories are hazy. #SongoftheDay Love and Marriage (Frank Sinatra)

Image
If you're of my generation, you might know this tune as the theme song from Married With Children.  I'm sure I've mentioned in the past that I wasn't "allowed" to watch Married With Children. I remember it airing daily in syndication, maybe at 11 at night?  No, 11:30.  I know I shouldn't joke about having been neglected as a child, but you'll often catch me saying it was really easy to get away with watching shows I wasn't supposed to watch when there were no conscious/sober adults around. So I did watch Married With Children more often than I should have, even though I didn't like it. Sometimes kids just want to do what they're not supposed to do.  Anyway, it's taken me only a year of living with a man to begin my devolution into Peg Bundy. The transformation is nowhere near complete. I'll let you know how nasal-y I can whine and how big I can get my hair. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and vis

#SongoftheDay Le Freak (CHIC)

Image
I'm having a really challenging day, dealing with the massive weight of depression, wanting to cry constantly, trying to get my writing done but feeling like work is just pointless. It was important, to me, to be here for you, though.  We're listening to disco because I like it and it has the potential to cheer me up. It hasn't cheered me up yet, but maybe if I listen to enough of it my mental health will get back on track. #SongoftheDay Little Green Bag (George Baker Selection)

Image
I grew up playing Scrabble with my grandmother and my siblings, so Scrabble is close to my heart.  I remember always plucking the tiles out of a Crown Royal bag--you know: the purple one with the gold stitching?  We also kept our marble collections in those bags. When I bought my own Scrabble board as an adult, I guess I was somewhat surprised that the tiles came in   a heavy plastic bag that didn't even have ties or anything.  For years, I've been saying I'll have to make a new one.   Thanks to my partner's old T-shirt and a ribbon from La Senza, I've done just this.  I've sewed up a perfect little bag that can be cinched up so the tiles don't fall all over the place. And it's green. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay The Cat Came Back (John McCulloch, Ed Ledson, Richard Condie, Cordelle Barker)

Image
The other day, my partner said, "All my friends think I don't like cats and dogs. It's so strange." It isn't really that strange. My partner is allergic to cats and dogs, so he stays away from them most of the time, but he's also a suck. He took his friend's puppy for a walk the other day, but decided it was too cold for the little pooch, so picked it up and cuddled it to keep it warm. And then there's the cat. There's an outdoor cat that makes the rounds down his street every single day. I'm not sure if it visits everybody, but it sure visits us.  Every day, when it comes to our door, my partner goes out to pet it (even after he got a rash that one time) and he also puts out a dish of clean water so the cat can stay hydrated on its journeys.  We are in no way trying to get rid of the visiting cat, but I thought I'd share this NFB classic from 1988.  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day

#SongoftheDay Love for Sale (Ella Fitzgerald)

Image
I just finished recording the audio version of Lexi Wood's story called Love for Sale , so obviously I've got this song in my head.  The story is about a college student selling her virginity to the highest bidder. She thinks she's in control of the situation until the man with the money takes her to a public park so he can deflower her in front of... Well, I guess you'll have to read the story . Or listen to the audiobook when it hits the market. ;-) If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Young Liars (TV on the Radio)

Image
My mother called the other day, while I was tending to a sick cat. She said, "Just checking in! I haven't talked to you in weeks! How's it going?"  I told her I was okay, but my oldest cat wasn't doing at all well. I really thought he was going to die that day. My mother's response was silence. Then, "Oh. That's too bad. ANYWAY, I went for a really nice walk this morning and..." She continued on with upbeat, animated stories about her day, totally ignoring the emotional state I was in, just glossing over it completely.  I should be used to this after 4 decades, but I guess it still pisses me off.   A couple months ago, my sister told my mom she'd been diagnosed with a medical condition. My mother's  reaction was silence.  Silence. Then, "Guess what I'm making for dinner?"  She wouldn't even acknowledge the information my sister had given her, because it's unpleasant.  My partner gently reminded me that it's not a

#SongoftheDay I Can't Stand the Rain (Ann Peebles)

Image
As it happens, I LOVE the rain, but this song spent all day yesterday in my head because it would not stop raining.  I watched an interview with Ann Peebles where she recollects writing and cutting this track. She blurted out the title one night when she was supposed to go to a concert, but everyone ended up staying in because of the weather. They wrote this song instead--and quickly, she recounts. Same with recording. It all came together very fast.  I'm having the opposite kind of writing day, but I know how great it feels when the art just flies out of you. #SongoftheDay Sunglasses at Night (Corey Hart)

Yesterday I wrote about hearing Material Girl on the oldies station and feeling quite dismayed because that was a song I grew up with. To add insult to injury, the oldies station played this song next.  As we listened in the car, my partner said, "He always sounds like he's pouting." I should show my partner this video!  He sounds like he's pouting and he looks like he's pouting. #SongoftheDay Material Girl (Madonna)

The car radio is set to a station my partner refers to as "the old people channel."  This is not just any old oldies station--it's the old people's oldies station.  My partner is a bonafide old person, so he really knows what he's talking about.  When we got into the car this morning, they were playing Material Girl on the old people channel.  I was like, "Nooooo I grew up with this song!"   My partner said, "Well, you've got to admit, it's been around for a while."  My very adult response was... "Shut up." Because if that song's been around for a while, then so have I. #SongoftheDay Hair (The Cowsills)

Image
My partner and I took a night walk last week.  As usual, we checked out Saturn and Jupiter, which were bright in the night sky.  I told him we were on the cusp of the Age of Aquarius, as those planets will be entering Aquarius in December.  He doesn't believe in astrology, but he asked me about it nonetheless.   I'm no expert in astrology. Being an Aquarius, I'm mostly interested in what makes Aquarians tick. I told my partner that we Aquarians have a reputation for being self-involved. Strangely, we're also considered the humanitarians of the zodiac. We'll fight for human rights on a global scale, but we're not so interested in actual individual humans.  When my partner heard that, he started quoting from the song Easy to be Hard, which has previously been a song of the day here on the blog.  That song is about "people" (Aquarians?) who care about strangers and social injustice, but aren't there for their friends and let down their loved ones.  Af

#SongoftheDay Have a Cigar (The Main Squeeze)

Image
My mother has often told me that, when she was a child, she always felt like the favourite of her father's many kids because she was the one he sent to the corner store to buy him a cigar. I forget how much his cigar cost, but my mother was allowed to spend the change on candy. I was telling my partner this story last night and his response was that it used to be very common for kids to buy cigarettes and such for their parents. Just when I was starting to feel like a young'un because I don't remember a time when six-year-olds could easily purchase tobacco products, I realized that, when I was young, my grandmother would often buy my siblings and I lotto scratch tickets.  It's something that could easily go into a birthday card. If we won a couple bucks on a scratch ticket, we'd go to the pharmacy down the street or the lottery kiosk at the mall and swap the winner out for a new ticket.  Well, that's what my sister would do.  I would usually redeem mine for cash

#SongoftheDay Lemon Tree (Trini Lopez)

Image
As I mentioned last week, I've been watching my Simpsons DVDs lately. When I got to the lemon tree episode, I obviously thought about this song. I went to grab it from YouTube and, just like yesterday, I found that the singer had died recently.  Trini Lopez died of Covid-19 in August.  This is news I hadn't heard. #SongoftheDay With One Look from Sunset Boulevard (Diahann Carroll)

Image
Earlier today, I was thinking about Diahann Carroll's extraordinary performance in Sunset Boulevard.  I had no idea, until I went to pull up this song, that she died last year.  She took on the timeless role of Norma Desmond here in Toronto in the 90s.  Looking back, I can't believe how lucky I was to see her.   My family couldn't afford things like theatre tickets, but a woman from the church I'd gone to as a child took an interest in me and brought me along to every performance she attended. All these years later, I think about her kindness all the time. It's well past time to track her down and thank her for the positive influence she's had on my life.  If I wait too long, I'll never get the chance. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Don't Put It In Your Mouth (Concerned Childrens Advertisers)

Yesterday I was telling my partner about this strange PSA that used to play during Saturday morning cartoons when my baby sister was a kid. It's certainly a memorable one.  I sang it to him while I was washing dishes, and I'm sure I haven't heard it in almost 30 years, so it's managed to stick in my head for that long.   It's your problem now. #SongoftheDay Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair (Nina Simone)

Image
It's National Novel Writing Month, and I've decided to hack away at one of my works-in-progress from the Lesbian Diaries series. This particular book is a little different from the rest, because it involves a haunting--perhaps even a succubus? I guess we'll have to wait and see.  I'm not far in. Today, as I was reading over the first few chapters, which I wrote at the hospital while my mother was recovering from surgery earlier this year, I came across this line: Black is the colour of my true love's hair.  And that's why we're listening to Nina Simone's gorgeous rendition of this traditional tune.  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site.  I've been watching my Simpsons DVDs lately, and the first episode I put on was the Thelma and Louise one with Marge and her neighbour. This song pops up twice in that episode.  Creepy video, right? It's a scene from a 1965 movie called Ski Party. Based on this clip, I'm not tempted to see it. #SongoftheDay Theme from The Mighty Hercules (Johnny Nash)

Image
The other day, my partner said something in a voice that reminded me of "the goat-boy from that old Hercules cartoon--remember that?"  Surprisingly, he did not remember that.   Which is to say, he did not remember this: The Mighty Hercules, a cartoon from the 60s. I watched it all the time, growing up. I don't remember it being so short, or so stupid, but what can I say? I also liked Three's Company when I was a kid.  What a surprise to learn Johnny Nash sang this theme song!  His voice is like crystal, don't you think? Or a bell.  I don't know what it's like, but it's gorgeous. #SongoftheDay La fille du vent (Olivia Ruiz)

Image
There's an episode of Frasier where Roz has to do community service in a retirement residence. An elderly woman who lives there says something to the effect of: "Every day, I look in the mirror and you know what I say? Ahh!!!" That's what I did this morning. I looked in the mirror, spotted a few new grey hairs, and went, "Ahh!"   My partner was very concerned and asked what was wrong.  I told him it was nothing, just MORE grey hairs.  He said, "Sorry--that's my fault."  Last week, he pointed out that ever since we've been living together, my "eleven lines"--those two vertical frown lines between my eyebrows--have become permanent residents of my face. One of the lyrics toward the end of this song talks about her father telling her "que je suis son cheveux blancs"--that she is the cause of his grey hair. That's not at all how I feel about my partner, but the proof is in the pudding.  Or, rather, the proof is in my ha
