#SongoftheDay Time Warp from The Rocky Horror Picture Show

Image
Seeing as it's Halloween, let's listen to a cult classic! I remember Morgan M Page saying on Twitter that she watched this film multiple times per day as a teenager, and would insist upon performing it, in its entirety, for her friends. Yesterday I watched an episode of Unsolved Mysteries from 1988. There was a segment about lost time and alien abductions. Last night, when my partner and I were lying in bed, I told him about the episode. I love ghosty stuff, but my partner doesn't believe in ghosts, so I figured he'd feel the same way about aliens. It blew me away when he was like, "I believe in aliens! They have to be real! And it makes total sense that they would do scientific experiments on us. Don't we do scientific experiments on other species?"  This guy still manages to surprise me.   If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Once in a Lifetime (Talking Heads)

Image
I have featured this song in the past, but the version I put up was a cover by Kermit the Frog.  Let's have the original, shall we?   This song popped into my head the other week, when my partner and I visited a river to look for fish. Salmon, to be specific. This autumn, we have visited four stretches of river here in Toronto to watch the salmon run. You could almost call it a hobby. Anyway, I don't know whether it was "the rocks and stones" or the water itself, but our surroundings brought this song to mind. That's why we're listening to it today. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. Tell anyone you know--particularly people who are isolated and enjoy music. Readers of adult fiction can also buy my books or check them out from your local library. #SongoftheDay Ghost (Fefe Dobson)

Image
Someone on Twitter mentioned Fefe Dobson and it reminded me that I knew her when she was in Grade 9. She was this tiny thing--at 14/15 she still looked like a little kid--but when she opened her mouth to sing, you were just blown away. She was so small, but that sound was SO BIG.   When she became famous, it wasn't a surprise.  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Unsolved Mysteries Closing Theme

Image
I've been watching this new series of Unsolved Mysteries on Netflix. I'm a sucker for nostalgia and also for mysteries. The other day I had it on in the kitchen while my partner was working on a jigsaw puzzle at our dining room table. When the closing credits came on, he was like, "Wow, that is some haunting music!" Netflix has just release this video, which is 5 hours of Unsolved Mysteries' closing theme looped. Good Halloween music, I'd say.  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Black Magic (Backxwash)

Image
Well, this is a first. Today I'm featuring a song we've already listened to here on the blog.  Why?  Because Backxwash just won the coveted Polaris Prize for her remarkable album God Has Nothing To Do With This Leave Him Out Of It , and this is my favourite track. It features Ada Rook, another artist I adore.   Huge congratulations to Backxwash on a well-deserved win! Here's where you can snag a copy of her album (and you definitely should!):  https://backxwash.bandcamp.com/album/god-has-nothing-to-do-with-this-leave-him-out-of-it If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Don't Dream It's Over (Crowded House)

Image
I've had this song in my head ever since I heard Tegan and Sara's "Back in Your Head" on the radio earlier this week. For days, I've been going, "Where is this coming from? I'm not dreaming anything's over." Then I noticed the connection between the lyrics in Tegan and Sara's song ("Build a wall of books between us in our bed") and the "Wall between us" line in this song. Mystery solved. It all makes perfect sense. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Iridescence from Five Preludes by Carlos Salzedo (Ahya Simone)

Image
I don't think I've ever featured harp music as our song of the day, and I'm quite sure Ahya Simone is the first Black trans harpist we've listened to. I read about her new music video for her experimental R&B track "Frostbite" in them recently , but it's been a while since we've listened to classical music here on the blog, so that's what we're doing today.  When I was in middle school, we had music class, which meant we got to learn a musical instrument. This was incredibly exciting. I've mentioned before that I grew up in a neighbourhood known for drugs and gangs and not much else, so when I asked the music teacher if the school owned a harp, she laughed and laughed and laughed.  She's probably still laughing today.  She was really nice, though. Her name was Ms. Bowes, which seemed amply suitable for a music teacher. Even though it's not spelled the same as a violin bow. And she played the French horn, not a string instrumen

#SongoftheDay Pepto Bismol Commercial Remix (Chosakken)

Image
My partner has a love-hate relationship with this song. Every time the commercial comes on, he notes that it's remarkably well-done, but since when do people grab their butts and sing about diarrhea onscreen? 1989, I guess? That's when the movie Parenthood came out.  I am delighted that there's a remix so that I can share this tune with you AND take up more than 16 seconds of your time. This remix is my everything. #SongoftheDay Little Bird, Little Bird (Elizabeth Mitchell)

Image
If you're a Futurama fan, you probably can't get through this song without tearing up. It's from an episode that's very much about confronting mortality. It's on my mind today because one of my cats is ailing. This comes as no surprise. He is a very old cat. I can see in his eyes that life is fading away.  There's an element of loss, especially with pets, that makes us go: why would I ever choose to love something that's sure to leave me? It's really hard to wrap one's head around the fact that anyone or anything could go at any time. Not just through death. We can lose that great job we thought we would have forever. A marriage can dissolve. A friend can move to the other side of the planet.  But does that mean this cat, that job, your marriage, your friend wasn't worth having in the first place? The people and pets and interactions in our lives teach us so much and help us to grow. It's hard to keep that in mind when we're facing loss,

#SongoftheDay Home (Stephanie Mills)

When I grabbed yesterday's song of the day, Black Butterfly, YouTube recommended this showstopper from The Wiz. It's actually the perfect follow-up to yesterday's post. #SongoftheDay Black Butterfly (Deniece Williams)

Image
I was gutted to learn that Black trans activist Monica Roberts died on October 5th, 2020. Hers was one of those deaths where you go... no, that's not possible. She was only 58 years old. She can't be gone. I just saw her online.  Monica was a prolific blogger, so I looked through her writings for an appropriate song to feature in her memory. She wrote a post about the Deniece Williams song Black Butterfly , suggesting it could easily be a theme song for the Black trans community. I would like to quote from the aforementioned post , because Monica's words bring tears to my eyes: "Fly Black butterflies. Spread your wings with pride, dream big dreams, show the world how beautiful you are and then take flight." #SongoftheDay Teenager in Love (Dion and the Belmonts)

I made a playlist of fun songs to listen to while washing the dishes, and this tune topped the list.  I hadn't heard it in decades, but I just about melted when it came on. #SongoftheDay Chattanooga Choo Choo (The Nicholas Brothers and Dorothy Dandridge)

Image
Yes, we have more tap dancing today! And a tune I absolutely adore!  Last week, one of the crosswords my partner and I worked on had the clue: The Nicholas Brothers, _____ and Harold. It drove me crazy that I didn't know the answer.  I'd posted a number on this blog featuring Cab Calloway and the Nicholas Brothers, but I didn't know their names. The answer is: Fayard. Not a name I'd ever have guessed. Enjoy this footage from 1941. Isn't Dorothy Dandrige a looker? I love the way her dress gleams when she moves. And that voice! *swoons* If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. Joel and the bots recite these words every so often in old episodes of MST3K, and until today I never knew where they came from. The answer is: this. #SongoftheDay Somewhere Out There (Linda Ronstadt & James Ingram)

Image
If you remember the 80s as clearly as I do, you'll recall that this gem comes from the animated feature An American Tail.  I remember it like it was yesterday: seeing this movie at the Cedarbrae Cinemas, and then stopping in at Beaver Lumber to pick up nails or drywall or both, maybe.  I always loved shopping at Beaver Lumber because they stocked their lumber indoors, so the whole store smelled like wood.   I have a soft spot for this song, too, because I was in a longterm relationship that was long-distance. Whenever I missed my girlfriend, she'd say we're just like the two little mice looking up at the moon. And, since we're talking about night skies, I'll be sure to mention that Mars is very visible right now.  If you haven't already, I would recommend looking up when it's dark out.  Go outside first, or you'll just be looking at your ceiling. My partner and I have gone out every night this week to look for Mars. There's only one night we've m

#SongoftheDay Total Eclipse of the Heart (Bonnie Tyler)

Image
My partner and I were playing table hockey yesterday, and I thought I'd put on some fun music to play in the background. So I put on an "oldies" radio station. And they were playing music from the eighties. Like this song. Which is fantastic. And has a trippy af video. But is it an oldie? To me, oldies will always be the music of the 50s and 60s. I guess every generation has its own oldies. This is just the music I grew up with. Not old. Because if it's old, I'm old, and I'm not old. Yesterday we celebrated our 500th post here on the music blog. As a middle-aged non-binary queer, I can think of no better musician to move into the future with than a trans man of colour in his seventies! Today we celebrate our 500th post here at A Friendly Musical Visit Every Day! That's right--we've shared daily songs and anecdotes for 500 days straight! I can say with vague certainty that there's nothing else I've ever done daily for 500 days, aside from brushing my teeth and stuff like that. Nothing work-related, for sure. I chose this song because they say 500 a lot. Real creative, I know. Anyway, Happy 500th Post to me for writing and to you for reading! #SongoftheDay Sivunittinni (Ligeti Quartet ft. Tanya Tagaq)

Image
This piece was commissioned by the Kronos Quartet as a part of their Fifty for the Future project. The score and parts are available for free online at  https://50ftf.kronosquartet.org/composers/tanya-tagaq and, even if you're not planning on picking up an instrument right now, I would encourage you to have a look at the performance note.  Now, I haven't looked at sheet music in... ohhh... 25 years? But when I was taking music theory, I never saw anything like "lopsided triangle with a squiggle." Tagaq's music is always so exciting because she creates these sounds that are new, but that aren't. You recognize them from nature, from your body.  In this quartet, Tanya Tagaq instructs string instruments to create noises I've never heard from strings (maybe I don't get out enough) and I find this sound so earthy and grounded that I don't want it to end. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the eas

#SongoftheDay Tiny Dancer (Elton John)

Image
Can't remember if I've ever mentioned this here, but there was an Elton John greatest hits album I couldn't get enough of, when I was young. My father had the record, but, since I didn't have a record player in my bedroom, I taped it onto a cassette. I had this really cool clock-radio that had a tape deck in it, so I listened to my tape of Elton John every night as I went to sleep. #SongoftheDay Riptide (Vance Joy)

Image
Last week, my partner was talking about the movie Midnight Cowboy , which I'd never seen. I laughed because I've been watching Futurama on DVD lately, and the film is spoofed briefly in one episode. I never got the reference until my partner described Midnight Cowboy to me. Ever since, I've had this song--Riptide--in my head, just floating around back there, not demanding terribly much attention.  This morning, I recited some of the lyrics to my partner and said, "Do you think he's talking about Midnight Cowboy ?" My partner had, unsurprisingly, never heard Riptide. I honestly don't know where he's been for the past 40 years, because he doesn't seem to be familiar with any music that was created after 1979. Anyway, I played my partner the lyric video (he was particularly amused by the line "I want to be your left hand man"), and when it mentioned the "movie that I think you'd like," he said that did sound like Midnight Cow

#SongoftheDay Buddy Holly (Weezer)

Image
More Weezer for ya. My partner turned on a hockey game last week and this song was playing. I haven't been to a hockey game in decades, but I seem to recall a lot of organ music. Maybe I'm getting old, but the music nowadays seems way too loud and tinny, or whatever the term is for when music is so loud you can't even hear it properly anymore. I do like this song, though. I'd never seen the video before. When I did a quick Google search for Bat for Lashes, the internet informed me that Natasha Khan was born in 1979. This video supports my theory that everyone instantly turns into a witch when they hit 40 (and that's a good thing). I also feel less bad about the cover I made for my new book Emma's Diary . If Natasha Khan can be 40, my cover model could be 39. Why not?
