#SongoftheDay Yakety Yak (The Coasters)

Image
I put up a song by The Coasters just a couple days ago but, honestly, hardly anyone clicked on that post. So here they are again with another song I loved, as a child. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. Tell anyone you know--particularly people who are isolated and enjoy music. Readers of adult fiction can also buy my books or check them out from your local library. Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely! I'm also an  Amazon Influencer,  so hopefully I can make a little pocket change when you buy stuff by clicking through  my affiliate links . But you don't HAVE to do any of that. #SongoftheDay Stressed Out (twenty one pilots)

Image
Okay. I know people are going to make fun of me, but I like this song. It's a reminder that nostalgia can hit at any age. I am middle-aged and nostalgia sweeps over me constantly.  My partner is a senior and nostalgia takes him like an ocean wave--sometimes to the point where he can't find enjoyment in the present moment. Was it last week or the week before that we went on a little holiday?  We were lucky enough to be able to rent the cottage my partner's parents built.  It was beautiful. The family who'd bought it after my partner's parents died made some huge improvements. Lots of upgrades (like a furnace!) but they also kept special items, like a painting done by my partner's aunt. Even so, my partner spent much of our time away bemoaning the fact that everything is different. It's not exactly the way he remembers.  Even though the lake is the same, the land is the same.   He didn't say so, but I could tell that he was craving various stages of life t

My partner played this song for me today because he knows I love hauntings and ghost stuff. I'd never heard it before. Reminds me of Scooby-Doo. #SongoftheDay Charlie Brown (The Coasters)

Image
I saw the words "Charlie Brown" in a book I was reading, and immediately pulled up this song. As soon as it came on, my partner started singing along. If you've been keeping track of my posts, you'll know that it is extremely difficult to get my partner singing. Sometimes he will speak the lyrics, but I've never actually heard him break out in song and really go with it the way he did with this one. I can understand why, though: it's so much fun and so nostalgic. I certainly remember listening to it when I was growing up. He asked me, "Is this The Coasters?" and I said yes--I only knew the answer because it was right in front of me. Then he reminded me that there was a segment of the Frasier episode we watched yesterday called (you guessed it) The Coasters. It was the episode called Motor Skills, in which Niles and Frasier flunk out of an auto repair course. They try to coast, but they can't even manage that. If you're wondering how you can s

Yesterday I mentioned that I've gone back to watching my Frasier DVDs. It occurred to me that Jane Adams, who plays Niles's second wife Mel, is in this Rufus Wainwright video. #SongoftheDay Up On The Roof (The Drifters)

Image
I've probably mentioned before that I have the entire series of Frasier on DVD . Usually, I stop watching and go back to the beginning at the point where Daphne and Niles get together. I just lost interest when their will they/won't they disintegrated. For a long time, I thought I was a terrible anti-romantic because of this.  Turns out I'm not the only one. I read somewhere that this happens frequently, with TV shows. Once there's a kind of resolution, the tension evaporates and interest wanes. That's why some shows will keep a will they/won't they going forever. Writers are wise not to destroy that magic.  Daphne and Niles don't interest me in the least, once they're a couple. They're pretty boring once they get together. I'm watching the episode where they have their first date--on the roof--which is why we're listening to this song. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thi

#SongoftheDay I Can See Clearly Now (Johnny Nash)

Image
I took last week off work while my partner and I escaped to the woods. Before we went away, I scheduled all my posts to go up here. Now that I'm back, I'm scurrying to pick up where I left off. I'm in the middle of uploading a new book as I write this, so the pressure is on.  Before going away, I put together a fun playlist for the evening, when we played cards. I remember a time when I used to assemble sexy songs for nighttime. Now it's songs for board games... Anyway, this song was on that playlist. #SongoftheDay Ain't No Rest for the Wicked (Cage the Elephant)

My partner and I were walking past a group of people enjoying the cool autumn weather yesterday. They were blasting this song, and, of course, I started to sing along.  I'm not even sure how I knew the words. I guess I've just heard it on the radio a million times.  My partner gave me his trademark look that I can only interpret as: "What on earth is happening to you?" I said, "I'm singing that song." He was like, "Oh."  That's not exactly a round of applause, is it? heh If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay New Rules (Dua Lipa)

Image
A couple weeks ago, I watched 12 different Youtube tarot readings in one day. Don't do what Giselle does. At least I can claim it's research for the book I'm writing, but even that is a flimsy excuse. I really do torture myself, at times. Anyway, one spread reminded the tarot reader so much of this Dua Lipa song that she actually looked up the lyrics while she was making the video. She was basically like, "All this stuff? Don't do this stuff!" It's good advice, I gotta say. The line "Don't let him in" reminds me of the movie Let the Right One In, and that's about vampires, so... exes = vampires is our lesson for today. #SongoftheDay Turn the Beat Around (Vickie Sue Robinson)

I can't seem to navigate away from the 70s. Today we're listening to a song we actually sang in music class, when I was in high school. Why? I'm not sure. We built up some interesting harmonies, and we got a BIG sound because there were lots of us in the class.  Can't help wondering how many other people sang disco classics in school choir... #SongoftheDay I'm Every Woman (Chaka Khan)

Image
When I was looking up who sang yesterday's song of the day--the theme from Reading Rainbow--I discovered that they'd produced a new version featuring Chaka Khan. I think this was done in 1999 or so, long after my time as a viewership of children's programming. Okay, not all children's programming. Before there was so much content to view online, I would watch just about anything when bored. But we're not bored today, because today we listen to some classic Chaka Khan. Enjoy! #SongoftheDay Theme from Reading Rainbow (Tina Fabrique)

This'll be a trip down memory lane for many PBS watchers my age and younger. I asked my partner if he remembered Reading Rainbow. He did not. He's older, so he wasn't spending the 80s watching children's shows on TV. When I explained to him that Reading Rainbow was a show about books, he was excited to hear about it. He's a bookworm if ever there was one. I guess I am, too. I guess I have been since I was young. Thanks, Reading Rainbow! #SongoftheDay Toto's Africa (Ndlovu Youth Choir)

Image
Here's the choral rendition of Toto's Africa I mentioned yesterday. This performance is visually stunning, but as a warning: I don't think the lights are technically strobing, but they might have the same effect if you're sensitive to strobes. They're probably fine, but I'm just mentioning it out of an abundance of caution.  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Hash Pipe (Weezer)

Image
The other day my partner was listening to a choral version of Toto's Africa, so I told him the story of how Weezer covered Africa, and then Toto returned the favour by covering Hash Pipe. I played the cover for him and he said, "I don't know how it compares because I haven't heard the original." He'd never even heard of Weezer, so I played this version, too. He didn't really say anything, so I guess I haven't created a Weezer fan. Not that I expected to. Oh man, this video! Waves of nostalgia are coming over me as I watch it. I probably haven't seen it in almost 30 years, but it was definitely one of the music videos I taped off Much Music and watched 30 million times.  *swoon* I remember watching the reboot of the National Lampoon's Vacation movie on TV at two in the morning, and it was kind of a joke that this was the dad's favourite song. But you know what? #SongoftheDay Brick House (Commodores)

Image
When my partner and I were listening to yesterday's Stevie Wonder track, my partner told me he remembered listening to Motown radio stations broadcast out of Detroit and hearing tracks by Little Stevie Wonder when he was a preteen prodigy.  I started talking about a musical group I used to see live. For the life of me, I can't remember what they were called. My brain is... not good. Anyway, they were fronted by a female vocalist and they specialized in funk. Brick House is a song they performed every time I saw them, so here it is today! #SongoftheDay You Are The Sunshine of My Life (Stevie Wonder)

We've been really lucky, lately. People who play musical instruments--and well!--have started playing them on their porches or front lawns. We've heard a lot of Celtic fiddling recently, as well as a solo clarinetist, but the other day we were treated to a two-hour performance. It was taking place way down the street, but we sat outside and listened in. This is one of the songs that was featured. My partner and I agreed that it is schmaltzy and wonderful--unlike most schmaltzy songs, which tend to be... not so wonderful. In my opinion. This song always makes me think of my partner. In the unlikely event that we ever get married, I wouldn't mind this as a wedding song, or whatever those are called. Although The Platters' Only You would probably win out. #SongoftheDay "The Nanny Named Fran" (Theme Song from The Nanny)

Image
My partner is sitting in front of the TV watching tennis broadcast from Flushing Meadows, and all I can think about is this theme song from The Nanny.  According to the internet, this tune was written and recorded by American jazz vocalist Ann Hampton Callaway. That's my bit of trivia for today, and this video is my bit of nostalgia. I heard this cover of a Joni Mitchell tune on the car radio last week. Strangely, my radio at home and both my partner's radios at his apartment are about 40% static when we try to listen indoors. So we've reverted to listening to music digitally, and sometimes listening to radio stations digitally.  You know how much I love radio.  I really wish my 25-year-old stereo would start working again. The CD player is also unreliable, and only one cassette deck works, so possibly it's time to say goodbye. It also takes up a lot of space. And collects a lot of dust. Have I just talked myself into throwing it out? Not sure. #SongoftheDay Baby Elephant Walk Remix (Henry Mancini)

Image
When my partner and I were changing the sheets last Sunday, this song popped into my brain. I asked him if he knew it. He didn't. So I started singing it at him--really high-pitched and annoying. I will never forget the look on his face. It said: why are you doing this to me? Sometimes I feel like the Bucket woman. "She'll sing at me!" I like this remix. I've been listening to the album me&you  a lot, lately. This music really helps me when I'm having bad mental health days. I don't think I've mentioned this here, but I sought out online therapy recently. I'd heard on the news that a variety of services were being offered for free because of covid, so I did a basic google search and found one that's a combination of CBT and communication with a therapist. It's going well.  I've given rave reviews to all the people in my life who need more mental health support than usual right now, but I don't think anyone has gone for it. Too bad. It's no silver bullet--I still have bad days--but I'm practising techniques that are helping.  The last time I had access to a therapist was 20 years ago, and that was a pretty garbage experience. This is the total opposite. I'm so pleased, and very very grateful. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the

The other day, my partner and I were talking about how comforting it was when there were DJs who stayed on the radio all night long. I'm not sure if there are any/many remaining radio shows that are hosted through the witching hours. I've written before about feeling comforted by these voices when I moved to my first apartment and didn't even have a TV.  I listened to the radio all night. The DJs made me feel so much less lonely. I come from a big family, so suddenly living by myself was really strange. As my partner and I were having this discussion, he asked me, "Have you ever seen American Graffiti?"  I laughed and said, "Yes!" because I knew what was coming. He asked, "Remember that scene with Wolfman Jack?" I said, "Oh my gosh, that's exactly what I was thinking of!" And it's true. While we were discussing DJs working throughout the night, I was thinking of exactly that scene in exactly that movie. We're listening to
