#SongoftheDay O.P.P. (Naughty By Nature)

Image
This song makes me stupidly happy. Not only is it incredibly nostalgic, but, as someone who played around for many years, I feel strangely SEEN when I listen to it. I happen to be in the process of recording the audio version of my book Audrey and Lawrence, which is a fictionalized account of an affair I had with a married man when I was younger. So I've got cheating on the brain. As a side note, Queen Latifah is in this video. Keep an eye out! If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. Tell anyone you know--particularly people who are isolated and enjoy music. Readers of adult fiction can also buy my books or check them out from your local library. Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely! #SongoftheDay Intergalactic (Beastie Boys)

Image
Comedy is my go-to coping mechanism to deal with stuff like depression and grief.  For Christmas, my brother gave me a Futurama DVD box set, so I've been devouring episodes lately. Beastie Boys are featured in a pretty early episode. The funny thing is that, when I initially watched Futurama (on TV), I had no idea who they were.  I've never seen this music video until now. You know I watch a lot of old MST3K, so I'm having Gamera flashbacks. heh If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Peaches (Presidents Of The United States Of America)

Image
Things have been getting a little heavy around here, lately, with so much talk of death. Let's lighten the mood, shall we? This is the time of year when I bake a peach cobbler every single day. I'll eat some for breakfast, some in the afternoon, more in the evening, and then it's gone.  As I was baking the other day, I sang this song to my partner. Of course I did. When I asked him if he remembered the classic tune, of course he told me he did not. Not only does he not remember any music from the eighties--the nineties are lost on him, too.  This song came out when I was in high school, and it was weirdly popular. I've listened to it seven times since I started writing this post. Ah, nostalgia. #SongoftheDay Dance With My Father (Luther Vandross)

I was just looking at a post of songs for grieving on a funeral company's website, and this one topped the list. Sorry to make you cry again! If you are mourning right now, I want you to know that you are not alone. I'm right there with you. And music is ALWAYS there. I know it helps me. I hope it helps you.  To date, I've posted more than 400 songs and daily hellos on this blog. If you're ever feeling lonely, I invite you to peruse them. The main reason I started this site was to feel less alone while reaching out to others who felt isolated. I know how isolating grief can be, especially if you come from a family like mine, where everyone retreats instead of coming together when we're sad. I hope all these posts, and all this music we listen to together, can be helpful. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. Tell anyone you know--particularly people

I mentioned yesterday that I'm grieving the loss of an Irish friend, so we're listening to more Irish music today. I always liked this song, and it strikes me as a good one for mourning. #SongoftheDay Danny Boy (John McDermott)

I just found out a family friend died. He was the Irishest Irish person I've ever met, so I'm listening to Danny Boy and sobbing like an infant. His death is hitting me HARD. #SongoftheDay Blame it on the Rain (Milli Vanilli)

Image
I just found out that the producer of Boney M. is also responsible for Milli Vanilli. I'd actually forgotten all about this pair until a news article about them popped up the other day. I didn't click on it and I can't remember what the headline was, so I don't have a lot of current information for you. I just remember what a hugely big deal it was when they were discovered to be lip-synching. Wow, remember when that stuff was newsworthy?  This song was so popular with my generation. It's taking me back. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Rasputin (Boney M.)

I have a friend who HATES Boney M, and I would say this performance probably encapsulates why? Despite my friend's views, I must say I have great affection for this track. It's one of those songs that was hugely popular in Canada, but not in the states. So maybe you've heard it a million times, maybe not. #SongoftheDay Magic (Olivia Newton John)

Image
I could have sworn I'd featured this song before, but it seems not. I thought I remembered talking about a short story I once wrote called "We Are Magic." It's about window dressers working after hours, one of whom is/pretends to be a living mannequin.  On an unrelated topic, I have seen so much fringe over the past few days, as I've reviewed these videos from the 70s...  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Magic Man (Heart)

I was just watching a RiffTrax where Bridget and Mary Jo start singing this (I think it was in the short called Marriage is a Partnership ) and they comment that it's a creepy song. I've always loved this song without really knowing the lyrics, so I looked them up to examine their creep factor. Maybe I just assume any coming of age story is going to be slightly creepy (mine certainly is!), because I have to admit, I'm not creeped out. Guess I've just lived too much creepy. I'm desensitized to creepy. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Crabbuckit (k-os)

A couple nights ago, my partner and I were eating dinner on the balcony. I was telling him that I'd been trying to figure out what chaos magic is, but I didn't understand the wikipedia page. He'd never heard the term.  As we were discussing this, my partner's jaw dropped and he quietly nodded his head. "Turn slowly," he said. "There's a hawk in the tree." Sure enough, there was a red-tailed hawk unbelievably close to us. My partner ran inside to get his camera while I kept an eye on the magnificent creature. A car drove by, and I turned my head for just a second. By the time I'd turned back, the hawk was gone. Disappeared. I didn't hear it or see it go. It was just gone. Yesterday, when I wrote the words "disco dancing," I immediately thought, "No way I'm disco dancing!" Then I went... wait, what song is that from? #SongoftheDay Celebration (Kool and the Gang)

Image
My partner came out from his shower today to find me dancing to this song in the living room. I've told you before how much I love it when my partner sweeps me into his arms and dances me around the kitchen. With this song, he just looked at me and said, "I don't know how to dance to this." But he did walk over to my computer, watch the video, and start bouncing a bit. #SongoftheDay What's He Building? (Tom Waits)

Image
I mentioned Tom Waits the other day just to tease you, but here we have an intriguing track. Every time I'm looking out the window, watching what the neighbours are up to in the alleyway beside our apartment, my partner comes up behind me and asks, "What's he building in there?"  heh.  Point taken. I couldn't find this track on YouTube, so I'm embedding from Bandcamp . Hope this works. I honestly can't get enough Backxwash. My mental health has been pure garbage lately, and artists like Backxwash help me so much.  To all you musicians out there: thank you for the music. I'm quoting ABBA. Yikes. My parter just played the Tom Waits track "Big Joe and Phantom 309" for me, but not before asking if I'd ever heard it. I'm a Tom Waits fan because of him, but he's the real know-it-all (in a good way). Anyway, no I'd never heard it. I'd never heard OF it. #SongoftheDay The Circle Game (Joni Mitchell)

I'll be honest with you: I've never liked this song. I've always wanted to. I've tried so hard. It's never resonated with me, but it's been stuck in my head all day. Here's what I was contemplating as I tried to rid my brain of this song: my partner and I have had some really bad mental health days lately, and the only thing I can think to say that actually helps me (and hopefully him) is "We won't feel this way forever." Sometimes that's all you can say to console yourself when emotions are intense. They will fade. They will. #SongoftheDay Clear the Area (Imogen Heap)

Image
We listened to an Imogen Heap cover yesterday, so today we've got the original. It wasn't easy choosing a song--I think of this entire album as one entity, and it evokes more nostalgia in me than most CDs I've purchased as an adult. I'm not really sure why that is.  I'm thinking. Nope, not coming up with an answer. #SongoftheDay Hide and Seek (Four Play clarinet)

Image
My partner woke up the other day saying, "You left me alone at the rally because you had to play clarinet. Then I couldn't find you again. But you were pretty cute in your bright red band uniform." Clearly, he was talking about his dream, but that's what led me to seek out clarinet music today.  I remember buying the Imogen Heap album Hide and Seek comes from and my best friend being like "Oooh Hide and Seek! I listen to that over and over!" I hadn't heard the track yet, and when I did listen I was like... it doesn't go anywhere! I kept expecting something to happen, because my friend liked it so much. I guess I still haven't quite learned to appreciate it for what it is. #SongoftheDay The Last Unicorn (America)

Image
Well, I mentioned this movie yesterday, so today we're listening to the song. As I watched this video that I guess pretty much spoilers the movie for you (if you can decipher it), I realized that I have no memory of what this film is about. A unicorn, obviously. But she turns into a woman I guess? All I know is that I watched it every time it came on TV.  I remember being in a motel room in Buffalo and my parents wanting to go out and do stuff, but my sister and I just wanted to sit on the bed and watch The Last Unicorn. So that's what we did. Went all the way to America to watch a movie we'd seen a dozen times on TV. Woo-hoo! Road trip! So I still can't remember the story of this film. As a perimenopausal person, I can only assume it's really about The Menopause. At this time of life, anything about the last of something is clearly about being childless and menopausal. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the ea

#SongoftheDay The Unicorn (The Irish Rovers)

Remember yesterday, how I mentioned I had the colours part of "Sing a Rainbow" stuck in my head, but I had no idea what the song was called until I looked it up? The exact same thing just happened to me with this song. My partner and I have been working on jigsaw puzzles together, and the one that's currently on the go has lions and elephants and flamingoes and all sorts of creatures on it (even a dik-dik, if I'm not mistaken).  Naturally, this song popped into my head.  Except the only part of the song I knew was the "green alligators and long necked geese, 'hoompty'-back camels and chimpanzees..." part.  Until I looked it up, I had no idea the song was about unicorns! Well, I probably knew. But I probably haven't heard that song in over thirty years, and my memory is not the best. Actually, this song is kinda sad. Reminds me of the movie The Last Unicorn. Remember that? I loved that movie, when I was a kid. Oh, and... what was that other movie

#SongoftheDay I Can Sing A Rainbow / Love Is Blue (The Dells)

Image
It's funny how the mind works. The beginning of this song (the "Sing A Rainbow" part) popped into my head out of the blue, and I realized I had no idea what the song was actually called. I knew it as a children's song.  When I found out that it was called Sing A Rainbow, I had to laugh. I'd just been listening to a podcast where they were talking a lot about rainbows. So maybe nothing really comes out of the blue.   The mind is a miraculous thing. #SongoftheDay Easy To Be Hard from Hair (Cheryl Barnes)

Image
Today, as I was leaving my building, one of my neighbours was a total asshole to me. This song has been in my head ever since.  I can be rude and mean to people, but not out of the blue. It's usually because they've done something rude or mean to me. I actually care deeply about everyone I come across, and I guess that's why it hurts me so much when people lack compassion or can't see their way to showing kindness to others.  I grew up in a neighbourhood that's known for drugs and gang violence, and people showed each other more respect there than they do in the ritzy rich-people area I live in now (not because I'm ritzy or rich--because I got lucky when the rental market was in the toilet 15+ years ago).  The moral of the story is that I'd like to be able to leave my house without getting all riled up by jerks, but I don't see that happening any time soon. To change the topic slightly, I had to sing this song as an exam piece for my music class in high

#SongoftheDay Wooly Bully (Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs)

This song came on the radio the other day, and I was transported back to childhood. At my friend Julia's sleepover party, we had a lip-synching competition. This is one of the songs my team selected to perform.  We all shoved our hair over our faces so we looked like Cousin Itt. That way, we didn't have to pretend we knew the words, because we didn't. My partner thinks there's something dirty about this song, though he's not sure what, because he doesn't know the lyrics. Neither do I, so it remains a mystery. #SongoftheDay This Is What Makes Us Girls (Lana Del Rey)

Image
I just saw a commercial for something called Bambi eye mascara, and naturally thought of this song. Then I sang it to my partner, who was quite perplexed, and asked what he'd done to deserve that. I reminded him that he used to date a girl called Lana. He reminded me that was a long time ago. She changed. She used to be cool. Now she's a banker or something, I don't know. #SongoftheDay Love Hurts (Roy Orbison)

Image
I seem to be sending out a lot of songs to the dead, these days. The dead are on my mind all the time. If you'd asked me fifteen years ago--when my father died--if I would ever write any sort of tribute to him, I'd have laughed in your face. I didn't help with his obit. I didn't drive out to the town where he died to help sort through his things. My brother told me there was blood everywhere. His apartment was rancid. Nobody cleans that up for you. Though I didn't help with the funeral arrangements, I did pay for my father's funeral.  But I did that as a fuck-you to a family member I haven't spoken to since. There are some lovely individuals in my father's family, but there are some money-grubbing assholes over there, too. You know how they say time heals all wounds? I wonder if that's true. While I haven't held on to the anger and bitterness I once held against my father, I'm still dealing with the trauma that comes from growing up in
