#SongoftheDay Kiss of the Spider Woman (Chita Rivera)

Image
Two years ago, my cousin died of a drug overdose. He's been on my mind a lot, lately. To commemorate his death, I've reposted the words I wrote at that time . It's quite a long post, so you can read it on my blog , if you wish.  Actually, I encourage you to do so. This one's from the heart . As sometimes happens when people we didn't get along with in life die, my affection for my cousin has steadily increased in the time since his passing. When he was alive, I judged him by his behaviours. Now that he's gone, it's easier to see the big picture. He's no longer a threat, so I can look at his struggles in context with his actions. I'm sending out peace, love and light to my cousin, to my family, and to you. Be kind to yourself. You are loved beyond measure. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. Tell anyone you know--particular

#SongoftheDay Shout (The Isley Brothers)

One of the guys started singing this on a RiffTrax I was watching, and it made me so happy.  You know when you completely forget a song exists, and then you hear it again and waves of nostalgia wash over you?  I had one of those experiences with this song. #SongoftheDay This Is It (Bugs Bunny Theme)

You may be shocked to discover that I didn't always want to be a writer. It's true. As a kid, I wanted to be an animator. I loved Looney Tunes. I had a giant Looney Tunes puzzle with every conceivable character on it, and when I finished that puzzle, I stuck it onto a giant piece of cardboard and covered it with shellac or something to keep it all together. It probably still exists in my mother's basement. She never throws anything away. #SongoftheDay Ring of Fire (Johnny Cash)

Image
I wrote a long post about this song, and then somehow managed to erase it. Does that mean I was never supposed to share the story I wanted to tell you? Or does that just mean I'm a dolt when it comes to computers? The anecdote I'd shared with you was about my grandmother. This was her favourite song. After she died, when my aunts and uncles were planning her funeral, the minister suggested this might not be the right number for a memorial service. Can you imagine? We should have played it anyway. My grandmother would have found that hilarious. She and my grandpa loved to show off their gallows humour. This past week has been tough. I'm having a lot of mental health challenges right now, and I'm missing my family members who have died. A couple nights ago, I could not sleep.  I couldn't shut off my brain. I kept thinking about a psychic show I'd watched on TV, where the psychic kept assuring the audience that their loved ones in spirit are always arou

#SongoftheDay Oceania (Bjork)

Image
Yesterday we talked about Vivek Shraya's awesome book, The Subtweet , which you should definitely read. The characters in this novel spend considerable time listening to Bjork, talking about Bjork, and singing along with Bjork. So today we're listening to Bjork. Of course, the characters sing It's Oh So Quiet, which seems to be the go-to Bjork song always. It was mentioned in a crossword puzzle I was solving with my partner. It was mentioned in a 90s Trivia board game I played with my family. But you know what? That is my least favourite Bjork song. So we're listening to Oceania instead. #SongoftheDay I'm A Fag 4 U (Vivek Shraya)

Image
I just finished listening to the audiobook version of Vivek Shraya's book The Subtweet . Now, you probably think I enjoy listening to audiobooks, considering I've recorded like 100 of them. Nope. My mind usually wanders when I try to listen to a book. I only checked out this version of the The Subtweet because my library system doesn't own the ebook or print book (why?), and I wanted to read the book SO BAD. I'm glad I got to listen to the audio version, because it is truly excellent. The narration is dynamic and the book is so rich and the characters so recognizable, and any insecure artist (so, any artist, basically) will see a lot of themselves in the musicians The Subtweet follows. Oh, and anyone who spends too much time on twitter will definitely appreciate this book. I've read a lot of incredible books since the start of covid, and I can't pick a favourite, but The Subtweet is in my top three, along with Little Fish and Jonny Appleseed . Read them

#SongoftheDay Come To My Window (Melissa Etheridge)

Image
I'm sitting on my bed as I write this post. My window is open, and I can hear my neighbour's deep voice. He's sitting on his balcony, which is right next to my window. Still, I can't hear exactly what he's saying.  He's talking to his wife. I love the couple next door. I've lived beside them for sixteen years, and every time I walk by their apartment, I hear them talking. They seem to spend every hour of the day together. I've seen them on the subway, I've seen them in the supermarket, I've seen them at the park. I know nothing about them--don't even know their names--but they seem to work. We share a wall, and I've never heard them arguing. My partner likes to remind me that the absence of arguments doesn't make for a good relationship, but I grew up in a whirlwind of anger and violence, so the peace between that pair appeals to me greatly. Anyway, yesterday we listened to Shawnee, who cites Melissa Etheridge as one of her majo

#SongoftheDay Ur the Only One (Shawnee)

Image
The musical artist Shawnee was featured in a crossword puzzle my partner and I worked on the other week. This song of hers really speaks to me, and that's why we're listening to it today. Shawnee is two-spirit, and she talks about her identity in detail in this interview with Kids Help Phone. It's a good read. Take a look . #SongoftheDay The Happy Organ (Dave "Baby" Cortez)

Image
I'd never heard this song until recently. I looked it up because my partner was telling me about hearing it, as a kid, and being innocent enough that, even when he wasn't a kid anymore, it never occurred to him that maybe the name of the song might be slightly... suggestive? #SongoftheDay Lola + Joseph (July Talk)

Image
It's July, so we're playing a little July Talk today. I've already told this story, but I'll never forget walking down the street with my partner, and a girl walks by us wearing a July Talk T-shirt. My partner asks me, "What is July Talk?" and I tell him it's a band. I name a bunch of their songs, and sing a few, and tell him why I like their sound. He's super-impressed. That's a happy memory. I like impressing people with music knowledge. Just a warning that this is a concert video and there is some strobing. #SongoftheDay Let's Talk About Sex (Salt N Pepa)

Image
I could have sworn I'd written an entire blog post about this song, but I can't seem to find it, so here we go. This song brings to mind a very specific memory: sitting in the car, my parents in the front seat, me and my sister and my cousin in the back. When this song came on, I was so embarrassed. I'd heard it before--it was a big hit--but never when my parents were around. My mom said something about the song being shameful, or they shouldn't play it on the radio, or something like that. I said nothing. My sister said nothing.  My cousin spoke up.  She said that, actually, it was a good song, because it was saying that people should talk about the consequences of having sex instead of just doing it. It meant that people should be informed so that they can make good decisions for their own bodies.  She schooled my parents, and I will never forget that moment. #SongoftheDay Baby Got Back (Sir Mix-A-Lot with the Seattle Symphony)

Image
If this is a song from your generation, you surely remember the skit at the start of the music video. ("Oh My God, Becky, look at her butt! It is so big...") Well, that popped into my head the other day and I kept repeating it to myself as I was making dinner. Finally, my partner was like... what are you saying? He is not of my generation. While he remembers this song (not fondly), he has never seen the music video. And we're not even going to watch the music video today, because I found this interesting version. Looks like the Seattle Symphony is fundraising, so you can check that out on YouTube if you're interested. #SongoftheDay alley-oop (Dijon)

The last time we featured a Dijon song here on the blog, we all went wild for it. I think that's because his music has that perfect combination of sweetness and honesty. So here we have another gorgeous track from the album How Do You Feel About Getting Married ? (That's one of my all-time favourite album titles, by the way.) #SongoftheDay V V V They Lie (Pantayo)

Image
You know I love Pantayo. I tell you all the time. Well, they've made this socially-distanced music video for V V V (They Lie), which happens to be one of my favourite songs from their spectacular self-titled album , which you should absolutely buy if you haven't already. #SongoftheDay Jumpin' Jive (Cab Calloway)

It's been a while since we've had a dance break, and it's been a while since we've seen Cab Calloway, so let's enjoy both today with this scene from the 1943 film Stormy Weather. #SongoftheDay Sunny Days (Lighthouse)

Image
I'm writing this post in the midst of a heat wave, which probably explains why this song is stuck in my head. My mother would certainly agree with the premise--she loves sunshine, she loves hammocks, she loves basking. But, as someone who gets sunstroke and heat rashes, I'm pretty much confined indoors. I like this song, though. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay happiness (Katie Dey)

Image
New music from Katie Dey, from upcoming album mydata -- available for preorder . Beautiful album art, as always. I think Katie creates it herself, but don't quote me on that. When I spotted this track on twitter, my feed was full of stories about hate and violence against trans people--as individuals, as a population, as a whole. There's always something vicious going on. I don't mention being genderqueer as often as I should (according to whom, I don't know), because it seems like every time I do, I'm met with super-shitty responses, even (especially?) from people who claim to be allies. There's a reason my pronouns aren't posted anywhere--it's because they change from minute to minute. I can't pin myself down. I saw a tweet one time from a younger person saying they tune out anyone over 40 who is still questioning their gender, but like... this shit takes time. Yes, even 40 years. Even 60 years. I know multiple trans women who came out in the

#SongoftheDay I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free (Nina Simone)

I always feel like I'm failing you if I present a song without much of a preamble, but what could I possibly say that could top what Nina Simone was singing in 1976? I wasn't even born yet, in 1976. I mentioned in a previous post that SKETCH Working Arts has been introducing me to a bunch of new-to-me artists via their Art in Pandemic series. The latest video I watched was Che's, which I encourage you to take a look at here . That voice! Wow! It was absolutely worth tracking down the Soundcloud mentioned in that video, because that's where I located this brilliant song, which I'm sure you'll enjoy as much as I do. Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow. #SongoftheDay Dancing in the Street (Martha and the Vandellas)

Image
My partner was just talking about Martha and the Vandellas because apparently they performed a concert at the university her went to. I'm just looking at the year on this video, though, and it says 1964. My partner is old, but he's not that old. He certainly wasn't in university in 1964. So maybe he meant they'd played a concert there before his time, or maybe they played a concert years later. I would ask, but he just went out to buy milk. Maybe we'll never know. #SongoftheDay Tiny Bubbles (Don Ho)

Image
I was just telling my sister this tale, so I guess I'll tell you too. It's yet another story about feeling old. A couple months ago, I played this song for a twenty-something friend of mine. She could not stop laughing. I don't think she heard half the song because she was laughing so hard.  She'd never heard Tiny Bubbles before. She'd never even heard OF it. I said to her: Remember on The Simpsons, when Homer sings "Writhing Funzos/ In my sack/ Makes me happy/ Makes me hurt my back"? That's based on this! She gave me this blank stare and it took a moment for me to realize this cultural reference that was so salient to my generation meant absolutely nothing to her. She had no idea what I was talking about. Not only had she never heard of this song from the 60s--she wasn't familiar with my cool contemporary 90s reference either! So there you have it. Just one more story about feeling old. But this one made my sister feel old, too, so it'

#SongoftheDay Can't Feel My Face (The Weeknd)

Image
Just read a news article saying that The Weeknd (damn you, autocorrect! I keep spelling it right and you keep changing it!) donated half a million dollars to a hospital in Scarborough (a suburb of Toronto)--which just happens to be where I was born and raised.  We're from the same place! This song always reminds me of a day I spent helping my sister set up her classroom (she's a teacher--in Scarborough!).  Sweet and I were still together at the time, and we were looking for something fun to do. We couldn't think of anything, so we decided to give my sis a helping hand. My sister made me redo everything I tried, because nothing I did was up to her standards. Sweet was fine, thought. She did everything right. Maybe she'd seen this Setting Up A Room video--the most boring educational content ever created in the history of industrial films. Oops I forgot to mention: this song reminds me of that day because I sang Can't Feel My Face NON-STOP. If you don't have

#SongoftheDay The Hardest Button to Button (The Royal Ballet)

Image
My best friend loves modern dance and ballet, so this one's going out to her. She turned 40 last week and she's pretty bummed about it. I can relate. No other age has affected me quite like the big 4-0. I'm a person who's always said age doesn't matter, but somehow 40 does. When my dad turned 40, we came home from somewhere and there were 40 pink flamingoes on our lawn. Plastic ones. Do people still do that, or was it an 80s thing? Anyway, this one in honour of my BFF. She's had a rough four decades. Hopefully the next four will be a little easier. Also, The Hardest Button to Button was the first White Stripes song I ever heard, and it's still probably my favourite. Just had to get that in. I almost never read the comments on anything--life's too short and my mental health is far too fragile. But when I pulled the link for this video, I did peek at the first few comments and I was happy to see how empowering listeners find this song, and this video in particular. #SongoftheDay Da Doo Ron Ron (The Crystals)

Image
I hadn't thought about this song in years, and then it showed up in a crossword and the memories came flooding back. When I was in elementary school, my class sang this song at our year-end concert. For some reason, my friends and I thought it would be badass af if we all said a different name instead of Bill. Except we couldn't decide which name we'd say. Some of my friends wanted to say Chuck. Some wanted to say Bob. So we combined both names into the never-before-heard name of Chob. At the school concert, we all shouted out "Somebody told me that his name was CHOB!" and we thought we'd get in big trouble for being so naughty. I don't think anyone in the audience noticed. Miriam Toews wrote a book about her father and, the other day, my partner read this book . In a day. He loved it. It really spoke to him.
