#SongoftheDay Conga (Gloria Estefan, Miami Sound Machine)

Image
I've had this song in my head for weeks.  As soon as I pulled up the video, I remembered it from back in the day. This song was super-popular when I was coming up. I'm laughing because we listened to piano music yesterday, and this video starts with piano and the groan of "This is so boring!" heh. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Debussy's La fille aux cheveux de lin (The Naked Pianist)

Image
Thirty years ago, when I actually knew how to play piano, Debussy was my top choice. I had a whole big book of Debussy sheet music.  Debussy's piano music is still my go-to for relaxation, and this tune is one of my absolute favourites. It was my favourite to play, too. I wonder, if I had the sheet music and a piano, could I play it again? Is Debussy embedded in my muscles? We may never know. #SongoftheDay Rhythm Nation (Janet Jackson)

Image
We've gone down a "rhythm" rabbit hole and I'm not mad. I can't listen to Janet Jackson without thinking about Janet Mock. In her first book, Redefining Realness, she mentions that she chose the name Janet because she was such a big Janet Jackson fan. Great book , if you haven't read it. #SongoftheDay Rhythm is a Dancer (Snap!)

Image
It's a good thing "rhythm" was one of my vocab words in Grade 12 English class, because I'm typing it a lot these days. And it's a good thing "rhythm" is the only word I spelled wrong on that test, because that one mistake learned me good. heh. But it's true that mistakes can be good teachers. I'm now an expert at spelling "rhythm"--as you can plainly see. Autocorrect hasn't kicked in once. #SongoftheDay Rhythm of the Night (DeBarge)

Image
This video came up when I was looking for Rhythm of Life yesterday. Now this is my generation! I listen to this song, which I probably haven't heard in 30+ years, and it's the 80s all over again. Can't talk. Lost in nostalgia. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Rhythm of Life (Diana Ross and The Temptations)

Image
A couple days ago I mentioned that I couldn't find the version of Scarborough Fair I was looking for. I'd been searching for months and never did come across anything that sounded even close to the version I'd once heard. Well, today we've got another conundrum. I've been looking for a certain version of Rhythm of Life for YEARS and I've never found it. Trouble is, I don't know if it even exists. I remember hearing this song for the first time when I was in high school. When I looked it up a couple years back and got the Sammy Davis Jr. version from Sweet Charity, I was like... is this even the same song? I mean, it is. The tune is the same. The lyrics are the same. I just have this memory of Rhythm of Life having a dark and haunting tone. It doesn't. I can't find any cover that matches the song in my head. Maybe it never existed in the first place? If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day,

#SongoftheDay Bop (MOM x W¥FE)

Image
This track was featured in a donor appreciation communication I received from  SKETCH Working Arts , which is a studio (and so much more) for young people living on the margins here in Toronto. One of the things I miss most, now that we're living in COVID-times, is going to art fairs and buying from young artists. I've met quite a few creatives who came up through SKETCH and have great things to say about their programs. I'm proud to be a donor. A lot of people who earn way more money than I do find it impossible to believe that you can be a low-income earner and still donate money to organizations you believe in and still purchase "frivolous" items like... art. I don't know how to argue that it's not impossible, except to say that I took home a grand total of $11,000 Canadian last year and I still found room in my budget to support orgs I believe in and purchase art from up-and-coming creators. Makes me wonder what rich people are buying, if they do

#SongoftheDay I'm Your Baby Tonight (Whitney Houston)

Image
You know I love workplace sitcoms from the 90s. Right? Well, I do. I've been watching NewsRadio lately.  I've never seen this series before. I knew Phil Hartman was in it, but I didn't realize it also features Dave Foley and Khandi Alexander. The pins on her! Wow! Turns out she is a dancer and choreographer in addition to being an excellent actress. I feel like I knew that, somehow? My ex-girlfriend gave me CSI: Miami DVDs, so I'm thinking this is something I learned while listening to DVD commentaries. That's something I used to do to put myself to sleep. Khandi Alexander choreographed this Whitney Houston tour, which is what brings us to today's video. #SongoftheDay Scarborough Fair (Zahliia Rose)

Image
I spent hours searching for an arrangement of Scarborough Fair I once heard on a TV show. I don't remember what the show was called.  That would make things too easy. Or maybe not, because after all my looking and listening, I never did find that particular version. But I did find this one. And it's gorgeous. I haven't been able to find out anything about the artist, but her voice is incredible. Just goes to show that, while you might not always find exactly what you're looking for, sometimes you do find something you didn't know you needed. #SongoftheDay Rise Up Tuscarora Nation (Pura Fé)

Image
There have been many occasions when I've tried to find the music I was listening to in the very early 2000s--before the existence of YouTube--and I can't locate it anywhere. It's like it never existed in the first place.  The Pura Fé song I wanted to share with you is on that list. But Pura Fé is such an incredible performer that I chose another song instead. It was important, to me, to find a video of Pura Fé performing live. Before I saw her live, I didn't even know you could play a guitar the way she does. It sounds so incredibly doleful that I'm always blown away by the fact that her vocals are even bluesier than the instrumentation. Her voice shouldn't surprise me after all these years. But it does. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay June Is Bustin' Out All Over (Carousel)

Image
I'm pretty good with Broadway musicals, but Carousel happens to be one I'm not familiar with in the least. I actually didn't know which show this song was from until I looked it up. It's coming at you today because I did some May songs in May, so I figure it behooves me to post a June song in June. EDIT: One of the dangers of scheduling these posts weeks in advance, in some cases, is that sometimes the YouTube video I've embedded has disappeared by the time my post goes up. That's what happened today, with a scene from the film Carousel. But I've found something even better! A high school production! Which will no doubt bring waves of nostalgia over those of you who participated in high school musicals! #SongoftheDay Shake Your Groove Thing (Peaches and Herb)

I'm on another of my world-famous disco kicks. Although, ever since the late 90s, I haven't been able to listen to this song without thinking of That 70s Show. The musical episode they do ends with a dance number to this song. You can't unsee Kurtwood Smith in sequins. #SongoftheDay Ring My Bell (Anita Ward)

Image
This song has been stuck in my head for WEEKS. I've been singing it around the house for so long that I can't quite remember how it got there. I suspect it has something to do with the fact that I always know my partner's home from his bike ride because I hear his bicycle bell dinging. I asked him if he rings his bell when he gets home to alert me to his presence, or to say hello, but he said no--it just dings when he's carrying his bike up the stairs. Bet you were expecting a more salacious story to accompany this song, but nope. We're talking about bicycles today. Sorry to disappoint. #SongoftheDay Straight Up (Paula Abdul)

Image
I just watched an episode of Celebrity Ghost Stories featuring Paula Abdul, so I figured I'd feature one of her songs today. When I went to YouTube, my fingers magically typed in Straight Up. Not sure why. When I saw the album cover, a wave of nostalgia came over me. I owned this cassette tape. I'd totally forgotten about that, but the image brought it back. So I clicked this track and sang along with the entire song. I haven't heard this song in probably 30 years, but I guess I listened to it enough time in 1988 that it implanted itself in my brain. #SongoftheDay Theme Song from Today's Special

Image
Yesterday we had a song from Sesame Street, so today I figure I'll share the theme song from my absolute favourite children's show.  Today's Special was produced by TVO, so Ontarians of my generation will probably be able to sing along, but I'm guessing a lot of you will be like... huh? I don't think this program was widely broadcast, but I could be wrong.  It's been known to happen. Today's Special was set after-hours in a department store. It featured a store employee and a store mannequin, plus a security guard and a mouse (both puppets). I'm pretty sure I met Jeff Hyslop, who plays Jeff the mannequin, sometime in the 90s when we worked on the same... oh, what were those things called? They were on TV. Jerry Lewis did them.  They'd be on for, like, 48 hours straight and people would call in to pledge money to whichever charity it benefitted? Telethons! That's the word. Sorry. Took me a while to get there. If you're wondering how

#SongoftheDay Mozart's Rondo Alla Turca (Karim Kamar)

Image
This piece came up in conversation recently--for two reasons. Reason One: My partner was telling me that his family went to three different church services every Sunday, when he was a kid. When they got home, he was allowed to pick out one record to play.  All the records were classical, and Rondo Alla Turca was one of his favourites. Reason Two: My youngest sister was reminiscing about our grandmother always taking us to Dairy Queen after school concerts and piano recitals. This was a BIG DEAL in our family, because Dairy Queen was VERY EXPENSIVE. It's ice cream for royalty! Anyway, Rondo Alla Turca was a Conservatory piece we all learned. If you think it's weird that my siblings and I all took piano lessons while we couldn't afford Dairy Queen, yeah, I thought that was weird too. Turns out my mom was trying to show up one of her sisters by getting us kids trained in pianoing. Makes perfect sense. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing yo

#SongoftheDay Hello (Lionel Richie)

Image
Last year around this time, I was scouring the internet for information about garage sales: dates, times, locations. I knew my partner and I would soon be building a life together, and I wanted to be prepared. I felt like I needed... I don't know what. Stuff that wasn't his or mine. Stuff that was ours. And I felt like that stuff should have a story--a history. I don't know if it was a meme going around, or if some individual was particularly creative in their marketing, but I remember seeing one garage sale sign that had a picture of Lionel Richie on it and said: Hello! Is it DEALS you're looking for? That line is, of course, a paraphrasing of this song's chorus. Because of COVID, garage sales aren't a thing this year--not where I live. People still want to get rid of stuff, since they've had time to root through all their belongings, so I've noticed a lot of people setting up tables on their driveways, putting out their garage sale items, and s

#SongoftheDay Fool's Paradise (Cold Specks)

Image
I just did a quick search to see which Cold Specks songs I've posted in the past so I wouldn't repeat myself.  I honestly couldn't believe it when my search function found no result. I LOVE Cold Specks and I'm 100% sure I've written about her before, so I guess that was on a different blog and probably on Twitter, too, because I have tons to say about this artist. First off, she reminds me of my sister. (And when I say "she," I'm referring to Somali Canadian singer-songwriter Ladan Hussein, who has released most of her music as Cold Specks.) One of the first stories I heard about her is that she didn't tell her family when her first album was released. Her sister went to the movies one day and there was an ad for Cold Specks' debut record. Her sister saw her face on the big screen and was just like... wait WHAT? That story always makes me think of my own sister (well, one of my sisters), because if she released a record there's no way s

#SongoftheDay Mercedes Benz (Janis Joplin)

Image
The other day, I mentioned my partner's cousin just died.  He's taking her death pretty hard, and telling me lots of stories about her life. To him, she was always a colourful character.  Their family was very religious and straight-laced, so the fact that she'd done LSD, for example, made her a bad girl in the extreme. My partner recounted to me hearing his cousin sing this song--Janis Joplin's "Mercedes Benz"--when the adults weren't around and feeling absolutely scandalized. He'd never heard anything so blasphemous. So today's post is going out to my partner's cousin, in loving memory. She's still the talk of the town. #SongoftheDay A Change Is Gonna Come (Otis Redding)

We listened to Sam Cooke yesterday. Today we've got a cover of a Sam Cooke song. #SongoftheDay You Send Me (Sam Cooke)

Image
We've had an upsetting evening, over here. This morning, my partner found out one of his cousins died. He had an okay day--in fact, he was oddly upbeat at times.  And then, during dinner, he broke down. He cried and I cried and, after dinner, we lit a candle for his late cousin. It was hard to come out of the tears.  While we washed dishes, my partner played Sam Cooke, because he knows how much I love Sam Cooke's music.  This is the first song that came on.  It couldn't be more perfect. #SongoftheDay Listen to the Lambs (The Nathaniel Dett Chorale)

Image
We had opera yesterday and classical the day before, so clearly it's time for some choral music. Today we're listening to The Nathaniel Dett Chorale, named for the Black Canadian composer Robert Nathaniel Dett, who lived from 1882 until 1943. In the 90s, I received vocal training from the group's founder and musical director Brainerd Blyden-Taylor, so that's my personal connection with today's piece. Our soloist is Nicole Jordan. #SongoftheDay Ritorna Vincitor from Verdi's Aida (Camilla Williams)

Image
I'm glad I waited a day before writing this post, because yesterday I was going to write, "Wow, Camilla Williams was over a hundred years old when she died!" I woke up in the middle of the night thinking, "Wait... no she wasn't..."  My math was just a wee bit off.  She lived from 1919 until 2012. That's not 100 years. But it is a long time, and imagine the changes she would have seen in her lifetime. Soprano Camilla Williams was the first African American to score a regular contract with the New York City Opera and the first African American to sing a major role with the Vienna State Opera. She also sang the American national anthem prior to Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech in 1963. Today we're listening to her glorious rendition of Ritorna Vincitor from Verdi's Aida. I had bought tickets to a production of Aida for myself and my partner, this year. We were supposed to go in May. Obviously, that didn't happe

#SongoftheDay Ravel's Pavane pour une infante défunte (Bobby McFerrin & Gewandhausorchester Leipzig)

Image
Whenever I need to calm my anxiety, I turn to Ravel and Debussy. Pavane pour une infante défunte   has been one of my favourites since Grade 5. Every time we had art class, my teacher would bring out her Ravel album and put it on the record player.  This is the music we listened to as we painted or drew. I will always associate it with relaxation and creativity. #SongoftheDay Arthur Theme Song (Ziggy Marley)

Yesterday I talked about my baby sister. After writing that post, this song crept into my head. My sister loved Arthur, growing up.  As a family, we still try to catch Arthur's Perfect Christmas when we're together for the holidays.
