#SongoftheDay How Soon Is Now? (The Smiths)

Image
I don't usually watch TV during the day (I often watch stuff on YouTube, but that feels different for some reason?), but lately I've had the television on all morning. Ever since the pandemic started, I've been getting a bunch of bonus channels (although I just opened my VISA bill to see that my cable provider also cranked up base charges, so I'm having a low-grade all-day panic attack at the moment because I NEED MONEY oh my god I need money) so, anyway, an old episode of Charmed just came on. I've never seen this show before. The theme song surprised me by being... well... good. It was this song. Which I really like. #SongoftheDay Black and White (Hazel Scott)

This clip of Hazel Scott playing TWO pianos is worth a watch and listen. It's from a 1943 Mae West film called The Heat's On. I feel I should warn you about a trumpet-playing puppet, in case you've got a phobia of creepy dolls. Also, be on the lookout for an enthusiastic old white dude trying (unsuccessfully) to snap his fingers. #SongoftheDay Telephone Hour (Bye Bye Birdie)

Image
This song came to mind Saturday night, when a childhood pal of my partner's called to chat. My partner is so funny with phone conversations. He'll easily talk to his friends for an hour or more.  I'll find him stretched out upside-down on the bed, lying on his back, with his feet walking up the wall. It always reminds me of this number from Bye Bye Birdie. #SongoftheDay History Repeating (Propellerheads ft. Shirley Bassey)

Image
My mother's been sending me all kinds of email forwards, lately. One of those forwards was about pandemics recurring every hundred years. That's probably why this song came to mind a few weeks ago. It came to mind, but I lost it before I had the chance to include it here. Last week, we saw Billie Eilish singing "Sunny" on TV and my partner mentioned that Shirley Bassey had sung that song.  I was like... Shirley Bassey... Shirley Bassey... wasn't I going to feature her here at the music blog? Which song did I want to post? It wasn't an old one... it was pretty new... Well, if the 90s is "new" music (and, to me, it clearly is), then this is the track. History Repeating. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Diana (Paul Anka)

This song was in my head when I woke up the other morning.  It made me burst out laughing, because you don't get much more insulting than: "I'm so young and you're so old." lol That line is pretty relevant to my relationship (all my relationships, actually), what with the age gap my partner and I have between us. Although, at this stage of life, nobody's telling I'm so young. I can't remember if I've told you this story before (sorry if it's a repeat), but the other day my partner mentioned that he's been referring to me as his "companion." I was like "Eww, that makes me sound like I'm eighty." He asked, "Should I refer to you as my YOUNG companion?" I said, "No, that makes me sound like I'm paid to be here." Companion? Ick. But he was like, "Well, that's what you are," and I can't argue there. Getting back to this song, I mentioned to my partner that it was stuck

#SongoftheDay Those Were The Days (Mary Hopkin)

Image
This song popped into my head the other day when I was making pasta for dinner. My partner was like, "I'll make the salad," and I said, "We can't have salad. We're out of lettuce." As I watched his face fall (this dude LOVES salads), it occurred to me that only a few short weeks (months?) ago, we could have popped out to the produce market down the street and bought a head of lettuce. We could have gone together! Now, if we're out of lettuce, we wait until the next big shopping expedition. There's no popping into shops anymore. The quickest turnaround we've had at a supermarket is an hour and a half. I don't want to sound complain-y. I am extremely grateful to have enough to eat. There are so many people who are struggling much more than we are. Anyway, I have a lot of experience making do with very little. Not having lettuce is hardly the end of the world. But, much in the spirit of this song, it was nice to be able to go out a

#SongoftheDay The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face (Gordon Lightfoot)

This song came on, once again, as we were washing dishes (I guess that's our primary music-listening-to time), and I burst into tears pretty much instantly.  I find this song, and particularly this version, so deeply beautiful. I can't listen to it without crying. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. I suppose I started something of a love letter to my partner in yesterday's post. Today I'll continue in that vein by telling you about New Year's Eve. My partner had bought us concert tickets for the evening, but when we got home I wanted to dance with him. This is the song he chose.  He didn't even have to think about it. On Easter Sunday, as we were washing dishes, he turned on the stereo. This is the first song that came on. In my mind, it meant we had to dance. So we rocked together in the kitchen, clinging to one another, and it felt so lovely and perfect and romantic. Believe it or not, I've never held myself in high regard. You might think that, in order to be a writer and market my work and all that, I must have incredible self-confidence. I don't. I've always thought I'm bad at everything and I'm not worth much. This is something I managed to convince myself a long time ago, and it wasn't hard to do. I know I shouldn't allow my self-worth to be determined by other people, but there's a part of me that's still as vulnerable as the young girls in the audience of this video. There's a part of me that needs to be shown I have value. My partner and I are not young people. We have histories, past lives, paths we've taken. When we got together, my partner had to make a choice: he could stay in his previous situation or build a life with me. If he'd stayed where he was, he would come into money. Big money. Like, a million dollars or more. He wouldn't have to do anything to "earn" it; thi

Yesterday I mentioned that I'm writing a book and reading a book. Well, I'm reading three books, but the one that's swept me off my feet--and the one I was referring to--is J oshua Whitehead's stellar novel JONNY APPLESEED . I've been meaning to read this book since it came out. Not sure what's taken me so long, but maybe whenever you end up reading a book is the right time for you to read that book. Not sure if I've ever mentioned this here, but I always read physical books. Like, books printed on paper and bound up, just like in the olden days. I never read on a screen when I'm reading for pleasure, because reading off a screen feels like work. Except times are weird right now, so I decided I would try reading JONNY APPLESEED on my phone. What I've learned from Joshua Whitehead's book is that, if the narrative is powerful enough, it can distract you from the medium. This morning, I was sitting in the kitchen, reading this book on m

#SongoftheDay Creep U (Black Dresses)

Image
You've probably noticed by now that I'm a big fan of Devi McCallion and Ada Rook. Together, they make up Black Dresses--and they've just released a new album called Peaceful as Hell . Believe it or not, I haven't listened to it yet. I've actually been writing a book lately. And reading a book.  Those two activities are taking up a lot of my time. I used to have music on all the time, even while I was working, and I thought music helped me to work. But, you know, my partner likes QUIET when he's concentrating on stuff, so I guess I've gotten used to the sound of silence. The other day, I put on my headphones to listen to stuff while I was writing, and I found that I could no longer do two things at once.  I couldn't listen and write. It had to be one or the other. Which is kind of annoying. But I guess, this way, I listen better and write better.  Hope so. Anyway, this song is from Peaceful as Hell .   Buy your copy at Bandcamp . If you're

#SongoftheDay Keep the Streets Empty for Me (Fever Ray)

When I was looking up the song "Fever" to use in yesterday's post, I came across this prescient track, whose title could not be more suitable for these pandemic times.  I thought wow, someone must have written that and got it up real quick, but nope. #SongoftheDay Fever (Little Willie John)

A local paper recently featured the image of an old quarantine sign that had been posted on a household where scarlet fever was present. When my partner saw this, he told me that his family had been quarantined when he was a child and he had scarlet fever. I asked him if one of those signs had been plastered to his front door, and he started to say no, but then he stopped. "I was up in bed the whole time, so I really don't know." Despite being sick and quarantined, my partner recalls this time with great joy. "My dad was home. I loved it." My partner had a lot of health problems as a child, so he was used to being at home with his mother. But, for a matter of weeks while quarantined, his father was around to tell him stories and play games. He remembers those weeks as some of the happiest of his childhood. I thought scarlet fever had been wiped out by the time I was born, so it was a real surprise when my baby sister caught it in the 1990s. She was quite i

Today we have another Jamaican folk song we used to sing at school when I was a kid. I remember us all being like, "What's a quattie?" (I had to look it up again, because I couldn't remember--it's currency, basically a halfpenny, I think?) This song popped into my head the last time I was doing volunteer work. Can't believe that was... over a month ago? It was so much a part of my week, and I feel its absence like an ache. Anyway, I overheard a conversation between two people and they were talking about ackee. I'm trying to remember what exactly they were saying. Talking about different ackee dishes they'd tried, maybe? Aside from ackee and saltfish. Ackee pizza? No... Ackee what? This is going to drive me nuts. Funny how stuff from your childhood comes back, full force, for no conceivable reason. We used to sing this traditional Jamaican song in school, when I was a kid. It popped into my head last week. No clue why. I haven't heard it for more than 30 years. But it came back to me and it just wouldn't leave. Not that I mind. There are far worse things to focus on, right now, than music. As I searched YouTube for just the right version of this tune to play for you, I came across a children's school concert that had been posted, and it honest-to-god brought me to tears. I can't tell you how much I would love to go to a school concert right now, and I don't even have kids. The other day, I was washing dishes and my parter was drying and I said, "Let's listen to music." So he put his playlist on shuffle, and eventually this song came on. As soon as this tune started, he said, "I bet you don't know this song." I proceeded to sing along.  I didn't just know the song. I knew EVERY WORD. And the harmonies. C'mon, bud. #SongoftheDay The World Is Falling Down (Abbey Lincoln)

Image
A couple months ago, I was snooping through my partner's iPod. When I came upon this song, I was like, "Oh my god, you have this? I love this!" I remember downloading this track onto my first computer (a Dell laptop) when the internet was first invented. Well, maybe not, but when I first became aware of it.  I was in university at the time and I didn't have internet access at my one-room apartment (I didn't even have a phone), so I remember downloading it in the stacks at Robarts library. My Dell laptop had an external... oh, what would it be called... internet card. That's not the right term. But it was a card I had to insert into the computer so it would pick up WiFi signals. Took forever to download this song, but so worth it. #SongoftheDay The End of the World (Skeeter Davis)

I first heard this song, but not this version, in the 1990s.  If you were watching TV back then, you'd have been familiar with Ally McBeal. My aunt had the soundtrack from the show, and I listened to it obsessively while housesitting for her one summer. Ally McBeal's artist-in-residence was Vonda Shepard, and it was her cover of The End of the World I'd been most familiar with until I looked up the original a couple years back. Maybe now's not the right moment to be playing songs on this theme (and I've got a few of them lined up), but this global pandemic we're living through seems post-apolyptic to me, at times. I don't want to bum you out, but this song is a heartbreaker. #SongoftheDay Lovely Day (Bill Withers)

Image
Bill Withers died last week, at age 81. When we listened to a track from Kimmortal the other week, I mentioned how much I love waking up and seeing my partner's fuzzy face on the pillow next to mine. Every day I feel more grateful to have him. Last year around this time, I was more deeply depressed than I've ever been. I was lonely, really for the first time in my life. I'd always enjoyed my solitude. Then I hit midlife and suddenly it was like... being alone was going to kill me. Honestly, that's how it felt. The pain of being alone was so brutal and raw I felt like I was going to die. I was on the subway a couple weeks ago, and two different lines were shut down because of suicides. The atmosphere felt post-apocolyptic, generally.  I recognize that a lot of people are suffering right now. Already, some have succumbed. When I started this site, I was socially isolated and living through some pretty sever mental health issues. I created this music blog in an att

It's easy to get addicted to the news, these days. The world is a 24/7 train wreck. How can we look away? My mother's basically been self-isolating since January. Well, not really, but she had her surgery, she was in hospital for weeks, then when she got out she couldn't leave the house, and by the time she'd recovered enough to be out and about, she wasn't allowed to.  Her immune system is severely compromised. She is very much at risk. Thank goodness my brother lives with her.  She also has lots of friends and sisters who are more than willing to drop groceries at her door. I didn't mean to write so much about my mom.  I only mentioned her to say that she tells me she often turns on the news first thing in the morning, and suddenly it's afternoon.  All she's done in that time is watch the news. There's not much good in those reports. I don't know if there should be. I don't know if goodness seems trite, when so many people are dying.

#SongoftheDay Open (San Fermin)

I can't believe it's taken me so long to feature this song. I was so sure I'd written about it... and then I realized, yes, I have written about it... in a post at my Donuts and Desires blog . This is what I wrote there: I spent an entire evening listening to Open in my kitchen, in a trance, holding my headphones and asking, "What does it mean? WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN???" while simultaneously being very glad I live alone. I have persistent memories of doing this (the trance dance to this song--and always in my kitchen) because I've done it many times. This song helped me through some major depressive episodes. As soon as I played it today, that deep depression came to mind. I am so grateful I don't feel that way now. Although I know it could easily come back (I've been chronically depressed for 20 years), I've never felt so well as I do now that I no longer live alone. Waking up next to my partner makes me feel the day has purpose and struct

#SongoftheDay Ol' Man River (Michel Bell)

A psychologist on the news was talking about things we can do to not drive each other crazy while we're locked down with our families/significant others. One of his suggestions was karaoke. heh Well, we ain't got no karaoke machine round these parts, but we have not one but TWO copies of the soundtrack from the 1994 Broadway revival of Showboat.  We put that on last night while we washed dishes and we kept commenting on how many great songs there are in this show. We could both sing along (though my partner is bashful about singing, so he mostly just says the words), but when it got to Ol' Man River, we just listened. Sometimes all you can do is listen. Correction: sometimes all you SHOULD do is listen. I thought this song followed well from yesterday's impeccable SXSW track, courtesy of Charles Bradley.
