#SongoftheDay The Lovecats (The Cure)

Image
2019 has been a year of sweeping changes, for me. For the first time in my life I'm kinda-sorta living with someone. Our plan was to spend a few days at my place, a few days at his. The trouble is, I'm enjoying the novelty of living in a gorgeous modernized apartment a little too much. The other trouble is, my partner is allergic to my cats. He tries to stay here as much as possible, but sometimes he has to cut his visits short. I can't remember if I already told this story, but at first I assumed he was leaving early because I'm boring and he'd rather be on his own. Then one time he said he needed to go back to his place, but I was welcome to come along. He'd thought the invitation was implied, but I'm not great with subtlety. You really need to smack me over the head with these things. He'd also assumed I knew he was leaving because he couldn't breathe. The cat allergy triggers asthma attacks. Good to clear up these misunderstanding, but

Funny how you can go your whole life not liking a certain genre and then something changes--goodness knows what--and suddenly that's your favourite type of music. That's what's happened to me recently with disco. I guess, because I grew up in 80s when disco was not only dead but scorned, I always had something against it. Times have changed. I've started listening to disco and I love it. It makes me happy. Do what makes you happy. Listen to what makes you happy. Disco is dead. Long live disco. #SongoftheDay Life Keeps Bringing Me Back to You (Lauren Wood)

E! has been airing old episodes of Just Shoot Me! for days and I've been watching it... for days. The other night, I couldn't sleep. I got up around 1 in the morning, went to the living room, turned on the TV, spotted this 90s sitcom and watched it until 3:30. At one point I heard the bedroom door close, so clearly my partner wasn't enthusiastic about listening to canned laughter in his sleep. I can sort of relate. Every time I watch this show , I end up having sex dreams about David Spade. Anyway, this is the song that plays over the end credits. I always liked it. #SongoftheDay It Couldn't Please Me More (Anita Gillette & Jim Brochu)

Every time I see a pineapple, I think of this song from Cabaret. The old-people love story is one I related to more and more as the years go by--so much so that I gave my partner a pineapple for Christmas. And I played this number for him. And I sang a few lines. We'll be well into Hanukkah by the time you read this post, but I'm writing it on the first night. My partner was playing a CD of choral Christmas carols and I just put it on pause for a sec to ask if I could sing him this song. Like yesterday's Water of Tyne, it's one we used to sing in choir--the only Hanukkah song in a sea of Christmas carols. I'm still sick and congested, so my voice is "low and sexy" (according to my partner) and out of control (according to me), but I will never tire of singing this song. It's more fun when you're singing with other people, though. #SongoftheDay The Water of Tyne (Imogen Bliss & Nick Skelton)

Image
When we listened to Sleepy Maggie the other day, it put me in mind of this traditional English tune. We sang this song in choir, when I was a child. It was always one of my favourites. I keep using the word "doleful," I know, but I'm going to say this song has a doleful teenage urgency to it. Maybe "angsty" would be a fit. An angsty teenage traditional tune--that's what we have here. Remember being so desperate to see your person that you'd go to any lengths, pay any money, do anything just to be with them? It's a distant memory, but I do. As a bonus, I'm including a gorgeous choral rendition because this is the exact arrangement I'm familiar with (so I can sing along, even though my voice is busted from being sick): If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas (Judy Garland)

Image
A doleful tune for those whose Christmas isn't everything they'd hoped for. I've celebrated Christmas pretty much the same way since childhood. This is the first year I'll be starting the day with my partner instead of my family. It's a big change for my mother, and a big consideration, seeing that my mom is gearing up for cancer treatment in the new year. Family expands when you form intimate and lasting bonds, and the best thing parents can do is to incorporated new people into the huddle rather than turning them away (which is, unfortunately, how my very insular family has always reacted to new people.) My partner is struggling particularly with Christmas, this year. Nostalgia is a tremendous force, and often a helpful indulgence, but trouble arises when you want to go back to times that can never be recaptured: when the kids were young, when parents were alive, when times weren't so tough. Those memories are lovely, when shared, but they can hinder enjoy

#SongoftheDay Carol of the Bells (Llibera)

Image
This video popped up for me on YouTube, and I can never resist Carol of the Bells. It was one of my favourites to sing, back when I was in a choir, and it's still one of my favourites to listen to. I love that it's sort of haunting, much like church bells themselves. This year keeps reminding me that things are going to happen whether you're ready or not, and Christmas is no exception. I'm nowhere near ready. Last-minute everything. Hope you've got your life a little more under control than I do! Hope you've got a couple minutes to listen to this carol... #SongoftheDay Sleepy Maggie (Ashley MacIsaac & Mary Jane Lamond)

Image
This song has been in and out of my head for days, but I couldn't remember what it was called or who it was by--and, not being fluent in Scots Gaelic, I couldn't exactly look up the lyrics. But, after numerous Google searches such as "that song I think it was popular in the 90s Canadian Celtic fiddle music" I have finally figured out that Sleepy Maggie is stuck in my head. And here she is now. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Cartoon Network (Black Dresses)

Image
There's a song on the Black Dresses album  LOVE AND AFFECTION FOR STUPID LITTLE BITCHES  that begins with the lyrics "Music isn't magic." I laugh every time I hear that, because I'm always saying the opposite. Music has gotten me through so many periods of deep depression and intense anxiety that I think it must be magic.  I also believe that honey is magic.  This song is helping me a lot right now. The whole album is.  I really like it.   Y ou should  buy it .  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. I don't know if you have any Solstice traditions, but ever since I was a teenager, I've lit every candle in the house to acknowledge the darkest day of the year. My mother always called the Winter Solstice a hopeful time, because once you hit that day it can only get lighter. Something like a dark night of the soul, I suppose. Or rock bottom.  Although I've heard that rock bottom isn't real. You can always bottom out even more. I guess that's true. But you can't get darker than the darkest day. I should take a page from my mother's book and see the hope in the darkness. It can only get lighter from here. Bit by bit. Day by day. #SongoftheDay begin again (Purity Ring)

Image
Woke up at 4 in the morning to body aches so bad they couldn't be ignored. Naturally, the Purity Ring song " Bodyache " has been occupying space in my head.  Not that there's much room inside my head.  The congestion in my chest moved into my sinuses while I was asleep. Every day is a new and exciting adventure in illness. Anyhoo, I've already featured Bodyache as a song of the day , so I've chosen another from the same album ( Another Eternity ). I'll just sit here and listen to it while I wait for my NeoCitran to kick in. #SongoftheDay Debussy’s La cathédrale engloutie - Water (Hélène Grimaud)

Image
Spent the entire weekend in bed. Not in the fun way. I was sick. Still recovering. I've had a CD of Debussy piano music since the beginning of time, and I'm sure it would have helped me feel a bit better, but I can't seem to find it. I suspect it's in a shoebox in the linen closet, but I haven't gotten my strength up enough to get on a step stool. So here's some Debussy piano music from the internet. #SongoftheDay Classical Gas (Glen Campbell)

Image
I've had a great affection for this number since childhood. I remember it coming on the radio and my father saying "This is Classical Gas!" and finding that so funny. I just now asked my partner why it's called Classical Gas and he said: "Because it's classical and it's a gas!" I'm not going to google it. That's your answer. I came across this song last week when I was listening to a playlist someone else had put together, and I went ohhhhhh I've heard this song many times, but I never knew what it was called. #SongoftheDay Scarlatti - Sonata in A minor K.149 (Alberto Chines)

Image
I'm sitting in my living room reading the Canadian Tire ad (hey, Christmas is coming...) and suddenly THIS comes on the radio (I'm listening to the classical music station my partner refers to as "the old-people channel"--and he should know, considering this is the station his car radio is tuned to). I say to no one, "This is a Conservatory piece!" I have no idea whether it still is. It's been a lot of years since I took piano lessons. But when I was a kid, this was definitely one of the pieces you could select for your Royal Conservatory exams. Considering how well I remember it, I suspect I did play it as an exam piece. (I always passed my exams by the skin of my teeth. For a kid who did well in school, the scores on my piano exams were super-super low.) Hard to imagine how my mother must feel: after she spent all that money we didn't have on piano lessons, I can no longer remember how to play. It's not like riding a bike, unfortunately.

#SongoftheDay Scooby Snacks (Fun Lovin' Criminals)

Image
Depression day. I got some writing done earlier, but now I'm back in bed with my computer lying next to me. I was about to indulge my latest constant craving (watching old episodes of Ghost Adventures on YouTube) when this song popped into my head out of nowhere. I've had a lot of good days lately, so I notice the bad ones more than before. Hope you're doing okay. Not sure whether this song is going to help or hurt. #SongoftheDay I Want to be Evil (Eartha Kitt)

Image
Since it's Friday the 13th, we're going to aspire to evilness with Eartha Kitt. I'd never heard this song before today, when I finally clicked a link YouTube's been pitching to me for months. Clearly, YouTube knew me as a teenager (even though the internet wasn't around when I was that age), because this song is totally teenage me. I was so innocent and I wanted to be SO BAD. I have no idea where this footage comes from, but I could watch it a thousand times. #SongoftheDay Misty (Johnny Mathis)

Image
I came across this song last week and had to listen to it, because it reminds me of a moment in one episode of Keeping Up Appearances (can't remember which one, exactly) where Rose is hitting on Hyacinth's neighbour guy (the one who plays piano--where is my brain today?) and I think the minister is carrying her away (I did try to find this scene on YouTube, but god help me...) and as she's being carried away she cries out, "Play Misty for me!" When I told my partner this story (such as it is), he said, "I think Play Misty for Me is a reference to something." He couldn't remember what, so he looked that up (successfully) and discovered Play Misty for Me was a Clint Eastwood movie from 1971. Starred Jessica Walter, apparently. The things I learn bringing you this blog every day... Anyway, heeeere's Johnny! (Mathis!) The other day I went out to buy orange juice, but the store was sold out of the regular Tropicana stuff. All they had was Orange-Tangerine. So I bought it. #SongoftheDay Haut les mains (Ottawan)

Back in elementary school, my friends and I used to dance to this song all the time. There was an English version and a French one, and I'd say both got equal airplay in the schoolyard. I still remember the dance routine that went along with it. Our moves were nothing like the ones in this video. Our outfits didn't approach these ones, either. #SongoftheDay Un-break My Heart (Toni Braxton)

Image
We were watching a televised concert on PBS the other night, and as soon as this song came on I was kind of like *gasp* I haven't heard this song in ages! I'm not sure I've ever seen the video. Kinda goofy at the start (sexy guy, though!) but, ultimately, the video makes this a much sadder song than it would otherwise be. It moves from breakup song (where there is potential to unbreak that broken heart, where her prayer could be answered if they got back together) to a song of mourning--where we know that heart will be broken forever. I talked about this Frasier episode extensively yesterday, so let's just watch the number he so brilliantly butchers. #SongoftheDay He's a Rebel (The Crystals)

Image
This song popped into my head the other day. I started singing it, but I couldn't remember the words, so I was kind of singing, "He's a rebel and I don't know how this song goes..." My partner laughed and called me Frasier, because the night before, I'd played him one of my (many) favourite Frasier episodes: Look Before You Leap . It's the leap year episode, where Frasier encourages everyone to get out of their comfort zone and then butchers Buttons and Bows during a PBS pledge drive. I'm sure you remember it well. That episode contains my absolute favourite line in the entire series: Let's all go to a taco show! Sure there are wittier and cleverer lines, but that one cracks me up so hard every time I watch the episode that it's earned #1 spot in my book. By the way, after I'd performed my spotty rendition of He's a Rebel, I said to my partner, "Well, do YOU know the words?" He's too shy to sing, but he looked me

#SongoftheDay What Becomes of the Brokenhearted (Jimmy Ruffin)

Image
I'm not going to say "I don't know who needs to read this," because I know exactly who needs to read it. I'd love to tell her this story myself, but it wouldn't be appropriate at this time. So I'm telling you. Hopefully, in some way, the message will reach its intended target. When I was a kid, I spent inordinate amounts of time with my maternal grandparents. Following my parents' divorce (which involved even more violence and threats than their marriage), my grandmother had us kids over every weekend. It was important to her to compensate for all the trauma we were going through. I have wonderful memories of halcyon weekends spent with my grandparents. My grandfather watched British comedies on PBS with us. He gave us $4 to buy a dozen donuts at the Tim Hortons down the street. We were allowed to drink a can of pop to drink.  We played poker together. So may happy memories. When my grandmother was in her eighties, long after my grandfather

#SongoftheDay The Lord is my Shepherd--Psalm 23 [Goodall] (Choir of Wells Cathedral)

Image
I meant to tell you a story yesterday, then I got totally off-track and told you a different story instead. So here's the story I meant to tell, when I started telling you that my partner was raised in a religious household, but that he's no longer a religious person: The other night, I woke up to the sound of my partner praying in his sleep. I was only half awake when I heard this, so I can't remember specifics. I do recall that he was reciting the Lord's Prayer over and over, but I don't think he was saying the whole thing all at once. I think he was repeating just a few lines at a time, and then moving on to different lines. After the Lord's Prayer, he recited something else, maybe some lines from the bible? They didn't stick in my mind. The next morning, I told him he'd been praying in his sleep and he said, "I WAS WHAT?!?!" It came as quite a surprise, clearly. "First of all, it worries me that I was talking in my sleep

#SongoftheDay Put Your Hand in the Hand (Ocean)

I am not a religious person--never have been. My partner, on the other hand, was raised in a very religious household. He isn't religious anymore. But when he moved residences recently, I noticed a family bible in a place of prominence at his new apartment. The bible had belonged to his late father, an important person in their church. It's an elegant bible. The item is deeply meaningful to my partner. That, I can understand. When I was a child, my paternal grandmother gave me her bible. This was a meaningful act that meant nothing to me. The interior is now torn and covered in crayon marks. I was too young to understand how she treasured that item. Many years after my grandmother's death, I looked at the plate inside that wee, worn bible.  It's dated 1936, given to my grandmother when she arrived in Canada from Wales--presented to her by the homeless shelter where her family lived when they moved here. This item means a great deal to me now, because I realize

#SongoftheDay Uneventful Days (Beck)

Beck has a new album out, and I have a migraine. Those two things are not related--at least, not causally. In fact, I've been under the covers for hours to block out this horrible greyish light that always seems to bring on migraines.  Meanwhile, a neighbour's yappy dog has been barking for the past two hours. NON. STOP. So I've been blasting my brain with this song on repeat.  It's pretty calming. My migraine thinks so. #SongoftheDay Banks of the Roses (The Barra MacNeils)

Image
When I was a kid, we had neighbours who'd clearly taken a wrong turn and accidentally bought a house in our ("bad") area. They moved to the city from... I don't know where... somewhere else, at any rate, so they obviously weren't aware that our neighbourhood was one to be avoided. And, really, they had more than enough money to move elsewhere. But they didn't.  They lived around the corner from us for many years. They could easily have been snobs, given that they had more money than everyone else on the block put together, but they were super-nice. I remember one time my dad knocked on their door and asked if they could spot him some "gas money" (which he immediately spent on booze), but they weren't even judgey about stuff like that. They were so nice that the dad of the family drove us kids to school alongside his own children. It couldn't be called a carpool, because carpools rotate drivers. He just drove us. Every day. Even when I gra
